- Tinubu Extends Nandap and Nwakuche’s Tenures to 2028
Tinubu extends Kemi Nandap’s tenure to June 2028 and Sylvester Nwakuche’s to May 2028, citing succession gaps in Nigeria’s two services. ABUJA — 20 October 2026. President Bola Tinubu has approved 18-month tenure extensions for Kemi Nanna Nandap, head of the Nigeria Immigration Service, and Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, head of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The State House announcement dated 19 October sets Nandap’s new end date at 30 June 2028 and Nwakuche’s at 26 May 2028. Both remain in their existing posts under the approval. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo recommended the extensions. The Presidency said the decision would address succession gaps and give the board time to appoint successors. What changed for Nandap and Nwakuche? President Bola Tinubu approved 18-month extensions for the two serving agency heads. Kemi Nandap’s immigration tenure now ends on 30 June 2028, while Sylvester Nwakuche’s correctional service tenure ends on 26 May 2028. The Presidency linked the decision to succession planning in both services. Two different end dates Premium Times published the presidential release on 20 October, reproducing the separate expiry dates. The approval concerns the Comptroller-General of Immigration and the Controller-General of the Correctional Service, two distinct offices with different responsibilities. For readers following the appointments, the immediate consequence is continuity at the top of both agencies. The additional time has a stated succession purpose: preparing for replacement leadership while the incumbents continue serving. Tinubu also praised the reforms undertaken under both officials and asked them to build on those gains. That assessment is the President’s stated position on their leadership. Nandap had already received an extension The immigration chief’s tenure had previously been extended. A State House statement issued on 31 March 2025 kept her in office through 31 December 2026. Tinubu also praised the reforms undertaken under both officials and asked them to build on those gains. That assessment is the President’s stated position on their leadership. ADVERTISEMENT Nandap had already received an extension The immigration chief’s tenure had previously been extended. A State House statement issued on 31 March 2025 kept her in office through 31 December 2026. That earlier announcement said Nandap began her Immigration Service career on 9 October 1989. It recorded her appointment as Comptroller-General from 1 March 2024, initially to serve until 31 August 2025. The October 2026 approval therefore changes an already revised timetable. For Nandap, the new June 2028 endpoint follows the December 2026 date established by the earlier extension. These successive announcements explain why older accounts of her expected departure may give a different year. Her agency’s public-facing work includes passport administration and immigration services. Readers seeking practical information can consult XTRAfrica’s guides to applying for a Nigerian passport and checking a passport application’s status . The leadership announcement itself concerns the duration of her service in office. Nwakuche’s path from acting head to confirmed chief Nwakuche first took over in an acting capacity following Haliru Nababa’s departure. A December 2024 report by the News Agency of Nigeria, carried by BusinessDay , quoted the board’s secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed, as saying the appointment would take effect on 15 December. ADVERTISEMENT Before that appointment, he was deputy controller-general responsible for training and staff development. The role placed him within the service’s senior leadership before he became its acting head. The Senate subsequently confirmed him as substantive Controller-General on 25 March 2025. Channels Television’s contemporary report described lawmakers’ adoption of the Interior Committee’s recommendation, presented by Senator Adams Oshiomhole. At the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio tasked Nwakuche with improving security at correctional facilities. That earlier parliamentary scrutiny provides context for the responsibility he continues to hold under the new extension. The announcement sits within a wider reform programme Nairametrics’ coverage of the extension places the decision alongside work on immigration processing, border management and correctional administration. Its account lists visa, work-permit, residence-permit and passport processes among the immigration reform areas. For corrections, it identifies alternatives to imprisonment where appropriate and relocation of overcrowded urban facilities among the initiatives being pursued. What follows the extensions The Presidency has tied the additional time to the appointment of successors. - Arthur Okonkwo Biography: Age, Height, Clubs and Nigeria Career
Read Arthur Okonkwo’s verified biography, including his age, height, Arsenal years, Wrexham rise, Charlton loan and Nigeria career. Arthur Okonkwo is a Nigerian international goalkeeper whose route to senior football has crossed England, Austria and Wales. Born in London and developed by Arsenal, he built his reputation during loans with Crewe Alexandra, Sturm Graz and Wrexham before joining Wrexham permanently in 2024. He is spending the 2026/27 season on loan at Charlton Athletic. His career reached a new level in 2026. Okonkwo made his senior Nigeria debut at the Unity Cup, helped the Super Eagles win the tournament and was later selected for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. The call-up placed a 24-year-old goalkeeper with an unusual European development story into Nigeria’s increasingly competitive battle for places. Who is Arthur Okonkwo? Arthur Okonkwo is a London-born Nigerian goalkeeper who plays for Wrexham and is on loan at Charlton Athletic for the 2026/27 season. An Arsenal academy graduate, he won the Austrian Cup with Sturm Graz, helped Wrexham earn consecutive promotions and made his senior Nigeria debut in May 2026. Okonkwo was born on 9 September 2001 in Camden, London. He is 24 as of 8 September 2026 and stands 6 feet 6 inches, or 1.99 metres. Why Arthur Okonkwo is in the spotlight Charlton Athletic confirmed on 7 September 2026 that Okonkwo had been selected for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. The club’s Nigeria call-up announcement said he had made four Charlton appearances since arriving on loan and already held two senior international caps. The selection matters because it turns an encouraging international introduction into a genuine attempt to establish himself in the Super Eagles group. Tournament invitations and friendly appearances can open a door; competitive qualifying squads reveal whether a coach sees a player as part of the next stage. Okonkwo was still early in his Nigeria career, but he had moved from an uncapped prospect to a goalkeeper trusted inside the senior setup within a few months. His call-up also carried an appealing symmetry. The Valley, Charlton’s home ground, was the venue where he made his Nigeria debut during the Unity Cup. Weeks later, he joined Charlton for the season. By September he was representing the same club while preparing for his first AFCON qualifying window as a Super Eagles player. For readers arriving through the latest selection news, XTRAfrica’s report on Arthur Okonkwo’s Nigeria call-up covers the immediate fixtures and squad context. His full story, however, begins much earlier—with a tall, technically promising boy in north London learning a position that rewards patience more than almost any other role in football. Early life in London and the Arsenal academy Arthur Chukwuezugo Okonkwo was born on 9 September 2001 in Camden, London. He grew up in England and entered Arsenal’s academy as a child. The club’s own profiles describe a long development journey through its youth system, where he advanced from the younger age groups into the under-18s, under-23s and senior training environment. Goalkeepers follow a different timetable from outfield players. A gifted teenage winger can be introduced for a short burst of attacking energy; a goalkeeper is usually entrusted with the whole match and every mistake can change the result. Academy progress therefore depends not only on reflexes and technique but also on judgement, emotional control and the ability to organise older defenders. Okonkwo’s physical potential was obvious. By adulthood he stood 1.99 metres, or 6 feet 6 inches. Height gave him reach across goal and the ability to attack high balls, but size alone was never enough. Arsenal’s Young Gun profile of Okonkwo presented him as a goalkeeper working on the details of positioning, handling and distribution as he moved closer to senior football. He signed professional terms with Arsenal in 2018. Bukayo Saka also signed his first professional contract in the same announcement, a reminder of how dramatically careers from one academy group can diverge. Saka became a first-team star quickly. Okonkwo’s path required several loans, different leagues and years of first-team evidence before international recognition arrived. The goalkeeper signed a new long-term deal in July 2021 and moved into the senior squad. Arsenal’s contract announcement followed a season in which he had trained regularly with the first team. He was given squad number 33 and appeared in senior matchday groups, although he did not make a competitive first-team appearance for the club. That last point is important. Being an Arsenal academy graduate does not mean Okonkwo played a run of senior games for Arsenal. His education took place there, and the club prepared him for the professional level, but the match experience that shaped his career came elsewhere. England youth football and the international choice Before representing Nigeria, Okonkwo played youth international football for England. Sturm Graz’s official introduction recorded four appearances for England at under-18 level. Those games reflected the country in which he was born and developed, but youth representation did not close the door to Nigeria. Players with more than one eligible national connection often face a decision that is both sporting and personal. Competition for senior places, relationships with coaches, family background and a sense of identity can all matter. It is tempting to invent a dramatic private explanation for such a choice, but Okonkwo has not needed one imposed on him. The verifiable sequence is straightforward: England selected him at youth level, Nigeria later brought him into the senior side, and he accepted the opportunity. Once he played for the Super Eagles in 2026, his public football identity changed. He was no longer simply an England-born goalkeeper of Nigerian heritage being discussed as a possible future option. He was a capped Nigeria international competing for a place in the national team. That pathway is familiar across African football. Nigeria has repeatedly looked to players developed in European academies, while also drawing from its domestic league and clubs across Africa. The result is a deeper pool but also intense competition. A call-up is significant; it is not a guarantee that any goalkeeper will become the long-term number one. ADVERTISEMENT Crewe Alexandra gave him his first senior season Okonkwo’s first major test outside Arsenal came in the 2022/23 season when he joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. The move placed him in League Two, where the football was more direct and the demands were immediate. He had to deal with crowded penalty areas, set pieces, second balls and the weekly pressure of results. For a young goalkeeper, lower-league football can be an unforgiving classroom. Academy matches emphasise development and technical principles. Senior league matches add experienced forwards who obstruct sightlines, supporters close to the pitch and opponents prepared to test every hesitation. A goalkeeper must decide when to hold position, when to claim a cross and when to clear danger without taking a needless risk. Okonkwo played regularly during the first half of the campaign. The loan gave him the repetition that training alone could not provide: real shots, real contact and decisions whose consequences appeared immediately on the scoreboard. It also made him more attractive to clubs looking for a young goalkeeper who already understood senior football. His Crewe spell ended in January 2023 so that a different challenge could begin. Arsenal sent him to Austria, replacing the physical rhythm of League Two with a top-flight title race and European-club expectations at Sturm Graz. Sturm Graz added a trophy and European experience Sturm Graz announced Okonkwo’s arrival on 16 January 2023. The Austrian club’s official statement described him as a 21-year-old, 1.99-metre goalkeeper arriving on loan from Arsenal after his time at Crewe. Sporting director Andreas Schicker called him young and hungry, while Okonkwo said the club’s ambitions matched his own. The move broadened his education. Austria’s Bundesliga offered a different tactical environment, unfamiliar opponents and the pressure of joining a club competing near the top of the table. He also had to settle in a new country midway through a season. For goalkeepers, communication is central to the position, so adapting to different voices and football vocabulary added another layer to the challenge. Okonkwo established himself in Sturm’s team and contributed to a successful spring. The defining result came in the Austrian Cup final, when Sturm defeated Rapid Vienna 2-0. The club’s history of its cup finals records the 2023 victory as its sixth Austrian Cup triumph. That medal was more than a line on a career list. It showed that Okonkwo could enter a strong senior side during the season, handle matches with a trophy at stake and contribute to a winning campaign. The experience also distinguished him from many academy goalkeepers whose early loans remain confined to reserve or lower-division football. Sturm wanted reliability as well as potential. Okonkwo’s size helped in the penalty area, but his ability to stay composed behind an ambitious side was equally relevant. A team competing for honours may dominate possession for long periods, leaving its goalkeeper relatively quiet before one high-value save is required. Concentration becomes a skill of its own. By the end of the loan, Okonkwo had senior experience in two countries and a major domestic trophy. His next move would connect him with the club that ultimately offered him a permanent home. Wrexham became the breakthrough club Okonkwo joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal in September 2023. The Welsh club had just returned to the English Football League and carried unusual global attention because of owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the documentary series built around the team and the drama of its promotion from the National League. For Okonkwo, the celebrity surrounding Wrexham was secondary to a clear football opportunity. He could play regularly for a team expected to challenge near the top of League Two. Promotion pressure meant his performances would be measured not merely by development but by whether the club achieved its target. He became a central part of the side. Wrexham finished second in League Two and earned automatic promotion in 2024, completing another step in the club’s rapid rise. Okonkwo’s performances were recognised nationally: Wrexham confirmed that he and Elliot Lee were selected in the 2023/24 EFL League Two Team of the Season . That honour captured what the loan had changed. At Arsenal, Okonkwo had been a talented academy graduate without a senior appearance for the first team. At Wrexham, he was a promotion-winning goalkeeper judged among the best players in his division. The season was not completely smooth. A jaw injury interrupted his campaign, forcing him out during a period when he had established momentum. Returning from an injury that affects the face can be especially demanding for a goalkeeper, who must continue diving into crowded areas and challenging opponents in the air. His recovery and return reinforced Wrexham’s confidence in him. When his Arsenal contract expired in the summer of 2024, Okonkwo had a choice about the next phase. Wrexham moved quickly. The club’s permanent signing announcement confirmed that he had agreed a three-year contract, turning a successful loan into a long-term commitment. The signing also closed his Arsenal chapter. He left without a competitive senior appearance, yet the academy years were not wasted. They had built the technical base that allowed him to succeed once regular opportunities arrived. Consecutive promotions changed his career level Wrexham’s first season back in League One brought another promotion campaign. Moving up a division increased the speed of play and the quality of finishing. Opponents pressed more intelligently, and goalkeepers were expected to participate more confidently when teams built from the back. Okonkwo remained part of a side chasing an extraordinary second consecutive promotion. Wrexham finished second in League One in 2024/25, earning a place in the Championship. For the goalkeeper, that meant he had helped the club climb from League Two to the second tier in two seasons. ADVERTISEMENT Success changed the questions around him. He was no longer being evaluated only as a promising former Arsenal player. He now had promotions, a cup medal and sustained senior responsibility. The debate became whether he could convert that record into a long Championship career and an international future with Nigeria. Injuries again complicated part of the journey. A wrist problem cost him time during the 2024/25 campaign. Goalkeepers rely on hand strength, range of movement and confidence in contact, making a wrist injury particularly disruptive. His return required him to rebuild rhythm while the promotion race continued. Wrexham’s first Championship season did not produce a third consecutive promotion, but the club competed close to the play-off places. The experience exposed Okonkwo to another rise in attacking quality and tactical complexity. It also set up the 2026 decision to send him to Charlton, where regular minutes could continue his development. For a broader look at African footballers navigating English and European systems, XTRAfrica’s feature on African-origin players in European football provides useful context. Okonkwo’s story illustrates one version of that route: European academy formation, loan football, permanent responsibility and a later senior African international debut. What kind of goalkeeper is Arthur Okonkwo? Okonkwo’s height is the first trait most observers notice. At 6 feet 6 inches, he covers a large part of the goal and has the reach to make saves that shorter goalkeepers may struggle to reach. That frame can also help when claiming crosses and defending set pieces. Yet elite goalkeeping is not a measurement exercise. Taller keepers still need quick feet to set before a shot, strong hands to control rebounds and the courage to attack balls in traffic. They must also lower their bodies quickly for close-range efforts and avoid becoming fixed on the goal line. Okonkwo is commonly described as a shot-stopper with a calm presence. Charlton manager Nathan Jones highlighted his shot-stopping, pedigree and experience when the club signed him. The Charlton loan announcement also showed why his career stage appealed to the club: he was still young for a goalkeeper but had already played in promotion races and won a major cup. His distribution is another important part of the modern role. A goalkeeper may start attacks with a short pass, break pressure with a driven ball into midfield or choose a longer delivery when the risk near goal is too high. The correct decision depends on teammates’ positions and the opponent’s press, not on a blanket demand to play short. Okonkwo’s loan history has exposed him to contrasting expectations. Crewe taught him to manage the physical realities of League Two. Sturm required composure in a top-flight side competing for trophies. Wrexham placed him inside a team carrying promotion pressure and international attention. Charlton offers another Championship setting and a coach who expects goalkeepers to support an organised, competitive side. There are still areas in which he can grow. Goalkeepers often become more authoritative with age as they recognise patterns earlier and direct defenders more decisively. Consistency across a full season, availability and performance against top-level finishing will determine how high Okonkwo can climb. Nigeria debut and Unity Cup victory Okonkwo’s senior international opportunity arrived in May 2026. Nigeria selected an experimental group for the Unity Cup in London, giving several players a chance to make their first appearances under coach Eric Chelle. He started the semi-final against Zimbabwe at The Valley on 26 May. The Nigeria Football Federation’s match report confirmed that Okonkwo, Chibueze Oputa and Femi Azeez earned their first caps. Nigeria won 2-0, and Okonkwo protected the clean sheet with a full-stretch save in the 71st minute. Four days later, he started the final against Jamaica. Nigeria won 3-0 to retain the Unity Cup. The NFF’s final report noted an early save from Okonkwo and recorded a controlled Nigerian performance. Two appearances, two wins and two clean sheets made an ideal beginning. The matches were not AFCON qualifiers or World Cup fixtures, so their competitive weight should not be exaggerated. But they gave the coaching staff direct evidence of how he trained, communicated and handled senior international football. Nigeria’s goalkeeper position carries exceptional scrutiny. Supporters remember the country’s great goalkeepers and expect reliability in tournaments where one error can end a campaign. Recent competition has involved keepers based in Africa and Europe, including Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie and Francis Uzoho. XTRAfrica has also followed Francis Uzoho’s club career , one of several careers relevant to the national-team picture. Okonkwo’s advantages are clear: size, European club experience and a clean introduction to international football. His challenge is equally clear. He must play regularly, stay healthy and show that the calmness visible in his first two caps can survive higher-stakes matches. Charlton Athletic loan and the next test On 20 August 2026, Wrexham loaned Okonkwo to Charlton Athletic for the season. Wrexham’s confirmation of the Charlton move preserved his long-term link to the Welsh club while giving him another route to match time. Charlton issued him shirt number 13. The club’s current player profile lists his Nigerian nationality, Camden birthplace, 9 September 2001 birth date and 6-foot-6 height. Those details also make clear why outdated profiles can confuse readers: he was developed and first represented at youth level in England, but his current senior international identity is Nigerian. The loan is not a permanent transfer. Wrexham remains his parent club, and his contract decisions after the season will depend on performance, squad planning and the terms governing his future. Charlton offers immediate responsibility; Wrexham retains the player who helped drive its rise. His early Charlton appearances came quickly enough for the Nigeria selectors to monitor him in a fresh environment. The September call-up then created a balancing act familiar to internationals: adapt to a new club, compete for selection and travel for national-team duty without losing rhythm. ADVERTISEMENT The 2026/27 season may be one of the most important of his career. A strong Championship campaign would reinforce his case as a goalkeeper ready for sustained second-tier football and continued Super Eagles selection. An inconsistent or injury-affected year would reopen questions about where he fits at club level. Nothing about that future is guaranteed. What Okonkwo has already shown is an ability to use each move as a step rather than treat a loan as a holding pattern. Crewe provided senior minutes, Sturm added a trophy, Wrexham gave him a home and promotions, and Charlton now offers another chance to prove himself. Arthur Okonkwo’s family and personal life Okonkwo’s public profile is concentrated overwhelmingly on football. Authoritative club and federation sources document his birthplace, career and international record, but they do not confirm a wife, girlfriend, partner or children. That absence should not be converted into a claim that he is single or has no children. It simply means those parts of his life have not been established through reliable public sources as of September 2026. Repeating names from unsourced celebrity pages would add gossip rather than verified biography. Okonkwo has Nigerian family roots and was born and raised in London. Beyond that broad, football-relevant identity, this profile does not assign private beliefs, family relationships or personal history that he has not chosen to make public. Career achievements and honours Okonkwo’s career already contains achievements across three countries: Austrian Cup winner with Sturm Graz in 2023. League Two runner-up and automatic promotion winner with Wrexham in 2023/24. Selected in the EFL League Two Team of the Season for 2023/24. League One runner-up and automatic promotion winner with Wrexham in 2024/25. Unity Cup winner with Nigeria in 2026. Two clean sheets in his first two senior Nigeria appearances. The list is notable because it is built on team progress as well as individual recognition. Goalkeepers are often judged through clean-sheet totals, but those numbers depend on the whole defensive structure. The stronger evidence is the repeated trust placed in Okonkwo by teams competing for promotion or trophies. - Dr. Débora Kayembe’s Open Letter to Tshisekedi on Kabila Trial
In an open letter, Dr. Débora Kayembe urges President Tshisekedi to ensure Joseph Kabila’s trial brings justice without dividing the Congolese nation. Kinshasa, 8 September 2025 – Dr. Débora Kayembe, a Congolese-born lawyer and activist based in the UK, has issued an open letter to President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo , urging him to safeguard national unity as the historic trial of former president Joseph Kabila Kabange unfolds. In her appeal, Dr. Kayembe warned that while the trial of Joseph Kabila is necessary to address past injustices, it must be conducted with impartiality and fairness to avoid divisions that could destabilize the Democratic Republic of Congo. Key Messages from the Letter Justice with Responsibility Dr. Kayembe emphasized that justice should not be turned into vengeance. “Justice that divides is justice that wounds the Nation,” she wrote, calling for a process that balances truth, reconciliation, and peace. - Museveni Inauguration Set for May 12 at Kololo
Gen Muhoozi inspected parade rehearsals as Kampala prepares for Museveni’s May 12 inauguration. Uganda’s security agencies have intensified preparations ahead of President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12 at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, with military and police commanders overseeing final rehearsals ahead of the event . Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba inspected parade rehearsals at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds and urged participating units to deliver a flawless performance during the inauguration ceremony. He described the parade as a reflection of the military’s discipline, readiness, and operational strength. According to officials present during the rehearsals, the event brought together senior commanders from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Police, and Prisons Service, including Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba and Commissioner General of Prisons Johnson Byabashaija. Security agencies have also announced extensive deployment plans across Kampala and surrounding districts ahead of the ceremony. Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said tactical response teams, rapid intervention units, and static security personnel would be positioned in key areas to manage security and traffic movements. Several roads leading to Kololo are expected to face temporary restrictions, including John Babiha Avenue, Yusuf Lule Road, and parts of Entebbe Road. Authorities said diversions would be implemented to ease congestion as delegations and invited guests arrive for the ceremony. The inauguration is expected to attract regional and international delegations, with thousands of attendees anticipated at Kololo Independence Grounds. Museveni, who first came to power in 1986, secured another term following Uganda’s January presidential election . Police said more than 10 armed suspects were dropped off near a petrol station late Tuesday before entering the settlement and opening fire at several locations. The attackers fled in a white vehicle, and no arrests had been announced by Wednesday. The South African Police Service said the motive remains under investigation, while provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Tommy Mthombeni said investigators were also examining whether the attack may be connected to illegal mining activity in the area. It was also reported that police were exploring possible links to turf wars involving illegal mining gangs.
