South African police have launched a manhunt after gunmen killed 12 people and wounded nine others at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, according to a BBC report.
Police said more than 10 armed suspects were dropped off near a petrol station late Tuesday before entering the settlement and opening fire at several locations. The attackers fled in a white vehicle, and no arrests had been announced by Wednesday.
The South African Police Service said the motive remains under investigation, while provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Tommy Mthombeni said investigators were also examining whether the attack may be connected to illegal mining activity in the area. It was also reported that police were exploring possible links to turf wars involving illegal mining gangs.
Illegal mining has become a major security concern in parts of South Africa, especially around old gold-mining areas near Johannesburg. A previous local police operation at Jumpers Informal Settlement led to arrests linked to illegal mining, according to the local News.
Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the suspects or the reason for the attack. Police say all possible leads are being followed as the search continues.
