Book a branch visit only if those channels cannot complete the job. Does it cost money? SARS eFiling is a free electronic service, and the digital channels above are official SARS services. You should not pay a middleman. I already file through my employer. Do I still need a tax number? PAYE does not replace an income tax reference number. If SARS or your employer asks for your tax number, recover it with What's My Tax Number or register if you do not have one. What do I do after I have the number? Keep the IT150. • In a strategic move to enhance economic stability and growth, Nigeria is in talks to secure up to $2.25 billion in loans from the World Bank, as disclosed by the government following the recent IMF/World Bank spring meetings held in Washington, D.C. The proposed financial package, expected to receive approval in June, includes $1.5 billion in development policy financing alongside $750 million in programme-for-results financing. Finance Minister Wale Edun highlighted the nation's proactive efforts to attract essential foreign exchange, including plans to issue diaspora bonds later this year. These bonds are aimed at engaging Nigerians living abroad in the country's economic development by leveraging their investment in national growth. Despite challenges such as a foreign exchange shortage that led to a dip in the value of the naira, Nigeria's currency has shown signs of recovery. This rebound is critical as Nigeria remains Africa's largest oil exporter. The administration of President Bola Tinubu has also inherited significant challenges including record debt levels and high unemployment rates. However, recent measures have seen a reduction in federal borrowing from the central bank by 50%, indicating a robust approach to fiscal management. The World Bank's potential approval of this substantial loan package in June will play a pivotal role in supporting Nigeria's ongoing economic reforms and development initiatives. These efforts are geared towards building a more stable and prosperous economic landscape for Africa's giant. Learn how to check and accept admission on JAMB CAPS 2026, fix mobile login problems, upload O'Level results and print your admission letter. Candidates seeking admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic, college of education or other tertiary institution should monitor the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board's Central Admissions Processing System, known as JAMB CAPS. This guide explains how to check your JAMB CAPS admission status, accept an offer, upload verified O'Level results from home and fix the most common problems candidates experience on mobile phones. New on 24 August 2026: JAMB announced that candidates can now verify and upload O'Level results from home instead of visiting an accredited CBT centre solely for the upload. Direct verification is beginning with WAEC results. Quick Answer To check your 2026 admission status: Visit the official JAMB e-Facility login page . Sign in with the email address and password linked to your JAMB profile. Select Check Admission Status . Choose 2026 as the examination year and enter your JAMB registration number if requested. Sign in with the email address and password linked to your JAMB profile. Select Check Admission Status . Choose 2026 as the examination year and enter your JAMB registration number if requested. Select Access My CAPS . Open Admission Status from the CAPS menu. Review the institution and course before accepting or rejecting the offer. If your O'Level result is missing, JAMB's new process allows you to start the verification from home. You will need your NIN , number of sittings, examination body, email address, GSM number and examination details. After paying the official verification charge, obtain a Verification Code and follow JAMB's upload instructions. The full process is explained below. For CAPS and general JAMB services, use websites ending in jamb.gov.ng . The new O'Level process uses a separate result-verification address identified in JAMB's 24 August instructions; verify the current address through JAMB's official channels before entering personal or payment information. Avoid agents or copycat websites requesting your password, OTP or payment to “activate” an admission. What Is JAMB CAPS? CAPS means Central Admissions Processing System. JAMB created it to manage and track tertiary admissions, reduce multiple admissions and allow candidates to confirm provisional offers. Institutions recommend candidates through CAPS, JAMB checks and approves eligible admissions, and candidates then accept or reject the offers. JAMB also states that candidates awaiting WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results must upload their O'Level results before they can be considered for admission. What You Need Before Checking Have the following ready: The email address connected to your JAMB profile Your JAMB profile password Your 2026 JAMB registration number A phone or computer with internet access Access to the telephone number used for JAMB registration, where SMS confirmation is required If you have forgotten your password, use Forgot your Password? on the official e-Facility login page. Do not pay an online stranger to recover the account. How to Check JAMB CAPS Admission Status in 2026 Step 1: Open the official JAMB portal Go directly to https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/login . Confirm that the address belongs to jamb.gov.ng before entering your details. Step 2: Sign in to your JAMB profile Enter the email address and password used for your JAMB profile. Select Login to open the e-Facility dashboard. Step 3: Select Check Admission Status Find and select Check Admission Status on the dashboard. Step 4: Choose the admission year Select 2026 as your examination year. Enter your registration number if the portal does not fill it automatically. Step 5: Open CAPS Select Access My CAPS . The CAPS dashboard should open in a new page or tab. Step 6: View Admission Status Select Admission Status from the menu. Check all the information carefully, especially: Your name and registration number The institution offering admission The programme or course The admission status Do not accept an offer until you have confirmed that the institution and programme shown are correct. ADVERTISEMENT How to Accept Admission on JAMB CAPS If CAPS displays a congratulatory message and an approved admission offer: Review the institution and course. Select Accept Admission . Confirm the decision when prompted. Sign out and log in again to confirm that CAPS now records the offer as accepted. Save a screenshot or PDF of the confirmation for your records. Depending on the confirmation method displayed by JAMB, candidates may be directed to use the telephone number linked to their JAMB profile. Where the SMS option is provided, send ACCEPT to 55019 or 66019 from the registered number. Follow the exact instructions shown by JAMB and confirm afterward that the status changed on CAPS. Candidates who cannot use the registered number, cannot complete the confirmation or are asked for biometric verification should visit a JAMB-accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. JAMB's 2026 admission policy gives successful candidates a four-week window to respond to an approved offer. Do not wait until the final day. Should You Reject an Admission Offer? Reject an offer only when you are certain that you do not want the institution or programme. Rejecting an offer does not guarantee that another school will admit you. Accepting an offer normally ends consideration for competing admission offers for that session. If the course or institution is unexpected, first check Transfer Approval and speak with the institution or an accredited CBT centre before making a final decision. Never let an agent accept or reject an offer without your permission. What the Different CAPS Messages Mean Congratulations, You Have Been Offered Admission JAMB has approved an offer. Review the school and course, then accept or reject it within the permitted period. Admission in Progress — Check Back Later Your application is still being processed. This is not a final admission offer. Continue checking CAPS and your institution's official portal. Not Admitted or Sorry, No Admission Has Been Given Yet No approved offer is currently on your CAPS profile. It does not always mean that your application has been finally rejected; the institution may still be processing admission batches. Recommended or Proposed Your institution may have recommended you, but JAMB has not yet completed the approval process. Do not treat this as final admission until CAPS displays an approved offer. Transfer Approval The institution may be proposing a different programme because you were not selected for the original course. Open Transfer Approval , review the proposed programme and make a careful decision. Accepting a programme transfer is not automatically the same as accepting the final admission; continue monitoring CAPS until an admission offer appears. How to Fix the Blank CAPS Page on a Phone Some candidates see only a white page or the word Welcome because the CAPS menu is hidden in the mobile layout. On Google Chrome: Open the CAPS page. Tap the three-dot menu. Select Desktop site or Request desktop site . Allow the page to reload. Look for the menu on the left and select Admission Status . If the page still does not work, clear the browser cache, try another browser or use a computer at an accredited CBT centre. Why the Accept or Reject Buttons May Not Work The buttons may be unavailable when: No final offer has been approved The institution has only recommended the candidate The page has loaded in mobile view A course transfer is waiting for a response The registered telephone number or biometric confirmation is required The portal is experiencing temporary congestion ADVERTISEMENT Do not repeatedly click the buttons or pay someone claiming they can unlock CAPS. Check again later or use an accredited CBT centre. JAMB Now Lets You Upload O'Level Results From Home JAMB announced on 24 August 2026 that candidates can now verify and upload O'Level or SSCE results without visiting an accredited CBT centre solely for the upload. The change links JAMB's e-Facility with examination bodies so that a candidate's result can be checked against the issuer's records before it is added to the JAMB profile. JAMB says the integration is beginning with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) . The home-upload option is intended to reduce queues and unnecessary CBT-centre visits while limiting manual-entry mistakes, mixed-up paper results and the use of unverified or fraudulent certificates. The announcement was issued in Abuja through JAMB Acting Director of Public Affairs and Protocol Dr Fabian Benjamin and was reported by The Guardian , Punch and the federal broadcaster Voice of Nigeria . What you need for the home upload “Already uploaded your O’Level result? JAMB says you do NOT need to upload it again or obtain a new verification code solely because of the new verification system. Previously uploaded results remain valid and will continue to be recognised, subject to any verification required by your institution.” Prepare the following: Your National Identification Number, or NIN The number of O'Level sittings you want to use The examination body for each sitting A working email address Your GSM number, preferably the number connected to your JAMB profile A debit card or bank-transfer option for the verification charge Your examination number The examination series The examination year Sufficient airtime to send an SMS to 55019 or 66019 How to verify and upload your O'Level result from home JAMB's 24 August instructions describe a two-stage process: first verify the result, then apply it to your JAMB profile. Stage 1: Verify the result Open the designated result-verification platform. JAMB's instructions identify buyresultsverificationcode.ng ; confirm the address through JAMB's official website or verified communication before paying. Enter your NIN and select Verify NIN . Choose the number of sittings you want to use. Select the correct examination body or bodies. Enter your email address and GSM number. Select Pay Now and complete the verification payment using a debit card or bank transfer. Enter the examination number, examination series and examination year for each selected sitting. Verify the result and obtain the Verification Code . JAMB had not stated one universal verification price in the announcement reviewed for this update. Confirm the amount displayed by the approved payment gateway before authorising payment. Stage 2: Upload the verified result Send VERIFY followed by the Verification Code to 55019 or 66019 from the appropriate GSM number. Follow the spacing and format displayed by JAMB when the code is issued. Wait for a notification confirming that the result has been uploaded. If you are combining two sittings, follow the notification directing you to JAMB e-Facility . On the e-Facility dashboard, select 2026 UTME O'Level Upload . Enter the Verification Code to display the two verified results. Select the subjects required for your proposed course. JAMB says candidates must choose at least five and no more than nine subjects, without selecting any subject twice. Select Apply the O'Level Results . Keep the successful-upload notification or take a screenshot for your records. Does this work for WAEC, NECO and NABTEB? JAMB says direct integration is beginning with WAEC . Candidates using NECO, NABTEB or another examination body should select only an option that appears on the live verification platform and follow JAMB's current instructions. Do not assume every examination body is already active simply because it appears in an older guide. Do you still need a CBT centre? You no longer need to visit a CBT centre merely to upload a supported result through the new home-verification process. An accredited CBT centre or JAMB office may still be necessary if: Your NIN or JAMB profile details do not match You cannot access the GSM number linked to your profile The examination body or result is not supported by the new system Verification fails or the result displayed is incorrect JAMB requests biometric confirmation The result does not appear on CAPS after a successful notification After uploading, return to CAPS and confirm that every subject and grade appears correctly. A result uploaded only to a university's screening portal may not automatically appear in JAMB's system. What to Do After Accepting Admission After CAPS confirms your acceptance: Print or download your JAMB admission letter through e-Facility when the service is available for your offer. Check the institution's official admission portal. Follow the school's acceptance-fee and clearance instructions. Confirm that your name, programme and institution match across both portals. Keep copies of your JAMB result slip, admission letter, O'Level result and payment receipts. JAMB's admission letter and the institution's admission letter are different documents. A school may require both during registration. 2026 Admission Benchmarks and Deadlines The 2026 policy meeting approved these national minimum tolerable scores: Universities: 150 Colleges of nursing sciences: 150 Polytechnics and monotechnics: 100 Colleges of education, colleges of agriculture and Innovation Enterprise Institutions: 100 These are national minimums, not automatic admission guarantees. Institutions and competitive programmes may set higher requirements. JAMB also states that the minimum admission age remains 16 years . Common JAMB CAPS Questions Can I check CAPS without my email address? The e-Facility portal requires the email address and password linked to the JAMB profile. Use the official password-reset option or visit an accredited CBT centre if you cannot access the account. Do I need to re-upload my O’Level result after JAMB’s new verification-code change?” No, if the result was already successfully uploaded. Can I accept admission on my phone? Yes. Use Chrome in desktop mode if the full CAPS menu does not appear. Follow any registered-SIM or biometric confirmation instruction displayed by JAMB. Can my school admit me without JAMB CAPS? JAMB says admissions outside CAPS are not recognised. A candidate whose name appears only on a school portal should continue monitoring CAPS and contact the institution if the offer does not appear. Does “Not Admitted” mean I have lost admission? Not necessarily. The school may still be processing candidates or additional admission batches. Keep checking until the institution closes its exercise. Can I change course after accepting admission? Do not assume that CAPS acceptance automatically authorises a course change. Contact the institution and follow JAMB's approved correction or change process where required. Is checking admission status free? Checking CAPS through the official portal does not require payment to an agent. Separate JAMB services, such as printing an admission letter, may require an official portal payment. Can I upload my O'Level result from home in 2026? Yes. JAMB announced on 24 August 2026 that candidates can verify and upload supported O'Level results from home. Direct verification is beginning with WAEC. Must I visit a CBT centre to upload my WAEC result? Not solely for the upload if the new home-verification process works for your result. You may still need an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office if verification fails, your profile details do not match or JAMB requests biometric assistance. How much is the JAMB O'Level verification charge? JAMB's announcement reviewed for this update did not state one universal amount. Check the charge displayed by the approved payment gateway before paying, and do not transfer money to an agent's personal account. How do I know the O'Level upload was successful? Wait for the successful-upload notification, then sign in to CAPS and confirm that the correct subjects and grades appear on your profile. Keep a screenshot or other confirmation. Scam Warning JAMB does not need a social-media agent to “upgrade” your CAPS status. Do not send money, passwords, OTPs or profile codes to anyone promising guaranteed admission. Use only: JAMB official website JAMB e-Facility JAMB CAPS information page Your institution's verified website A JAMB-accredited CBT centre or official JAMB office For the new home-upload service, JAMB's 24 August instructions identify buyresultsverificationcode.ng as the result-verification address. Because it is separate from the main jamb.gov.ng domain, confirm the link through JAMB's official website, verified social account or support channel before entering your NIN, card details or verification information. • FDLR Warns of Rwanda False-Flag Plot to Justify DRC Invasion

FDLR warns Rwanda is planning false-flag attacks to justify its illegal presence in eastern DRC. Group urges international vigilance amid fragile peace process. RUTSHURU, DRC (Dec 17, 2025) – The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) has issued a preventive alert accusing the Rwandan government of orchestrating a false-flag operation intended to justify its illegal military presence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a statement addressed to the governments of Congo, Burundi, the United States, and the broader international community, the FDLR alleges that Kigali is preparing attacks on its own soil, which it plans to blame on the FDLR in order to tarnish the group’s image and manufacture a pretext for continued aggression in eastern DRC. These attacks are designed to create the illusion of a threat posed by the FDLR and to legitimize Rwanda’s military presence on Congolese territory,” said Cure Ngoma, FDLR spokesperson. Claims of Manipulated Youth, Fake Defections The FDLR alleges that young recruits, formerly associated with the group but now under Rwandan control, are being used as instruments in this disinformation campaign. The group claims these individuals were coerced and indoctrinated, lured by false promises of safe repatriation and high-ranking positions in Rwanda. These same individuals were behind recent attacks in Walikale, carried out under Rwandan military command,” the communiqué states. The FDLR warns of a second phase of operations planned on Rwandan soil, which it says is part of a pre-arranged campaign to discredit the group internationally. Reaffirming Commitment to Peaceful Dialogue The FDLR insists it remains committed to peaceful reintegration into Rwandan society through inclusive intra-Rwandan dialogue. We have no intention of attacking Congo or any other state,” the group asserts, adding that its efforts to engage with international actors, such as MONUSCO, have been systematically blocked. • In a concerning revelation from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), the final quarter of 2023 saw an unprecedented 84% surge in digital fraud incidents across Tanzania's commercial banks. This dramatic increase has put a spotlight on the escalating cybersecurity threats facing the financial industry and the urgent need for comprehensive countermeasures. A Stark Rise in Cybercrime The BoT's report, released in a March 5 circular to financial institutions, highlights a disturbing trend: more than Tsh1.65 billion ($647,000) was illicitly extracted through mobile and internet banking fraud in the October-December period. This represents a sharp uptick from the Tsh901.8 million ($353,600) reported in the preceding quarter, underscoring the growing sophistication and frequency of cyber-attacks. While the year's overall digital fraud figures slightly dipped below the Tsh1.66 billion ($650,980) peak in Q1, the consistent increase in subsequent quarters paints a worrisome picture of the evolving cyber threat landscape. Diverse Fraud Tactics Uncovered The analysis delves into the various strategies employed by cybercriminals, noting a 60% rise in ATM card skimming to Tsh159.87 million ($62,700) in Q4. Although the year saw fluctuations in the methods used, the cumulative effect of these digital thefts poses a significant challenge to the financial sector's integrity. The BoT's Call to Action The BoT's circular, while not providing comparative data from previous years, serves as a clarion call to Tanzania's financial service providers. The central bank urges heightened vigilance and the adoption of advanced internal controls to mitigate future fraud risks. This proactive stance is crucial in an era where digital transactions are becoming the norm, making robust cybersecurity measures more vital than ever. Towards a More Secure Financial Future With nearly Tsh4.9 billion ($1.92 million) lost to digital banking fraud in 2023, accounting for a substantial portion of the total losses in the sector, the message is clear: the fight against cybercrime requires continuous effort and innovation. As the digital frontier expands, so too must the strategies to protect it, ensuring the safety and confidence of Tanzania's banking customers . • Nairobi, Kenya — In a significant development, the Kenyan government has urged parliament to adopt a more stringent regulatory framework for TikTok rather than imposing a ban. This recommendation comes in response to a citizen's petition and growing concerns over the content circulated on the Chinese-owned platform. Growing Concerns Lead to Call for Enhanced Oversight Recent discussions in Kenya's parliamentary panel have highlighted issues such as the spread of propaganda, fraudulent activities, and inappropriate content on TikTok, prompting calls for better oversight. The Interior Ministry has been vocal about these challenges, emphasizing the need for a regulatory approach that aligns with Kenyan laws. Proposed Co-Regulation Model The Ministry of Information and Communication has suggested a co-regulation model. This approach would require TikTok to proactively monitor and screen content to ensure it complies with local regulations. • SARS Refund Delayed? 7 Reasons and What to Do

Waiting for a SARS tax refund? See seven common reasons for delays, how to check your refund status and when to lodge a complaint A tax assessment showing money owed to you does not always mean SARS will pay it immediately. Your refund may be held while SARS checks your return, validates your bank account, waits for old returns or applies part of the credit to tax debt. SARS says it aims to pay nine out of every ten refunds due within 72 hours when the refund exceeds R100. That is a service target, not a guarantee. It applies only when the refund has passed the required checks and there is nothing else blocking payment. This guide explains the seven main reasons a SARS refund may be delayed, how to identify the problem and what to do next. Quick answer: Check the refund through the SARS MobiApp or the official SARS WhatsApp service on 0800 11 7277 . Then open your Income Tax Statement of Account and SARS correspondence on eFiling. These should show whether the delay involves bank verification, return verification, an audit, outstanding returns or tax debt. How long should a SARS refund take? The normal 72-hour target should not be confused with the time allowed for verification or an audit. The clock normally depends on SARS receiving all requested documents in a complete and correct form. Merely uploading a file is not enough if you did not click Submit or if SARS later asks for more information. Seven reasons your SARS refund is delayed 1. Your banking details are incorrect SARS cannot pay a refund into an invalid account. Problems may arise when an account number or branch code is wrong, an account is closed, or the account is not registered in the taxpayer's name. The normal 72-hour target should not be confused with the time allowed for verification or an audit. Situation SARS guidance Refund is cleared, exceeds R100 and has no blocker SARS aims to pay within 72 hours Bank details selected for verification Up to 21 business days after all requested documents are received Income-tax return selected for verification Up to 21 business days after all requested documents are received Several tax years selected for verification Up to 90 business days after complete documents for all years are received Return selected for audit SARS prioritises completion within 90 business days after complete documents are received, but complex audits can take longer The clock normally depends on SARS receiving all requested documents in a complete and correct form. For individuals, a valid account is generally a South African cheque, savings or transmission account with a valid bank and branch number. It cannot be a credit-card, bond or ordinary foreign-bank account. What to do: Sign in to SARS eFiling and check the registered bank details. If they are wrong, update them through the RAV01 form or the relevant ITR12 process. You may also use Profile Management in the SARS MobiApp. Upload any bank-verification documents SARS requests. Do not try to change bank details by telephone, fax or post; SARS says those channels cannot be used for the change. 2. SARS is verifying your banking details Even correct or newly updated bank details may be placed in Pending Verification . SARS may create a case and ask for supporting documents before releasing the refund. SARS says bank-detail verification can take up to 21 business days from the date it receives all required supporting documents. Once validation is complete, the refund should ordinarily be paid within 72 hours if no other block remains. What to do: Open your eFiling letters and casework, submit every requested document and keep the submission confirmation. Make sure the account holder's name matches the taxpayer's details. Do not count the 21 business days from the date you changed the account if SARS requested documents later; count from the date the complete documents were received. 3. Your return was selected for verification Verification is a check of the information on your return against supporting documents, third-party data and other records. It is not the same as a full audit. SARS may request IRP5/IT3(a) certificates, medical-scheme certificates, retirement-annuity certificates, travel records, invoices, proof of deductions or other relevant material. It aims to conclude an income-tax verification within 21 business days after receiving all requested documents. ADVERTISEMENT What to do: Read the verification letter carefully and use its checklist. Upload clear, complete documents on eFiling or through the SARS Online Query System. Click Submit to SARS after uploading. A document left in an uploaded-but-unsubmitted state has not been sent for review. Check eFiling for a completion letter, revised assessment or referral-for-audit notice. If verification changes your assessment and you disagree, use the correction or formal dispute route that applies. A service complaint is not a substitute for an objection. 4. You filed several tax years at once Filing a backlog of returns can create a longer review. If multiple years are submitted and selected for verification, SARS says the process may take up to 90 business days from the date it receives all required documents for all the years under review. What to do: Check each tax year separately. A missing document or unanswered request for one year may hold up the overall process. Keep a simple list showing each year, the SARS letter date, what was requested and when you submitted it. 5. Your return was selected for audit An audit is more detailed than verification. SARS may examine financial records, supporting documents and third-party information before deciding whether the declared tax position is correct. SARS says audits can take from 30 business days to 12 months, depending on complexity, transaction volume and taxpayer cooperation. Although it prioritises finalising an audit within 90 business days after receiving the requested documents, complicated matters can take longer. SARS also says it generally provides audit progress reports every 90 calendar days after the Notification of Audit, subject to limited exceptions. What to do: Read the Notification of Audit, note the assigned auditor's details and submit the material requested by the deadline. Ask the named auditor for a progress update if the expected period passes. Do not assume that a referral-for-audit letter means the audit has already started; SARS says it starts formally when the Notification of Audit is issued. 6. You have outstanding tax returns SARS will not pay a refund while required returns remain outstanding. The missing return may be from an earlier year and may be unrelated to the assessment that created the refund. What to do: Check your eFiling profile and compliance status for every outstanding return. Submit anything legitimately due. If eFiling marks a return outstanding that you believe was already filed or was not required, contact SARS and obtain a case number rather than submitting incorrect information simply to remove the warning. 7. You owe SARS money When your tax account has outstanding debt, SARS may use a process commonly described as debt equalisation or set-off. Part or all of the refund can be applied to the debt before any remaining credit is released. What to do: Request an Income Tax Statement of Account and compare the refund credit with tax, penalties and interest owed. If the refund was fully used against the debt, there may be no cash payment. If you dispute the underlying assessment or penalty, follow the applicable request-for-remission, objection or dispute process; do not use a delayed-refund complaint to challenge the tax decision itself. ADVERTISEMENT How to check your SARS refund status You can use any of these official methods: Option 1: SARS WhatsApp Save 0800 11 7277 as the SARS WhatsApp number. Send “Hi” or “Hello”. Select Refund Status . Enter the identity and tax-reference information requested for authentication. Use the cellphone number registered on your SARS profile. The WhatsApp service is for individual taxpayers and is not available to tax practitioners. Option 2: SARS MobiApp Open the app, select Refund Status on the home screen and follow the prompts. Option 3: eFiling On eFiling, check: Your Income Tax Statement of Account (ITSA) . SARS says the amount and date next to Electronic refund show the expected refund payment. Your Notice of Assessment (ITA34) to confirm that the assessment actually produced a refund. SARS Correspondence for a verification, audit or bank-validation letter. Your supporting-document work page to confirm the documents show as submitted. Your compliance position for outstanding returns or debt. Menu wording may change as eFiling is updated, but the ITSA, ITA34 and correspondence are the key records. What to do if the stated payment date has passed Follow this order: Check the status and records. Confirm the ITSA payment date, bank details, outstanding returns, debt and any open verification or audit. Contact SARS. Call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277 or use an official digital channel. Explain the issue and ask for a case number. Follow up on the case. Keep the case number, dates, letters and proof of every submission. Lodge a SARS service complaint if the applicable turnaround time has expired. On eFiling, go to Services → Complaints → New Complaint . A delayed refund will usually fall under quality and speed of service or an unresolved operational matter. These categories require an existing case number. You can also contact the SARS Complaints Management Office on 0800 12 12 16 or visit a branch. Approach the Office of the Tax Ombud if SARS does not resolve the complaint. The Ombud normally requires you to exhaust the SARS complaints process first, unless compelling circumstances justify earlier intervention. SARS says the maximum resolution date for a complaint is 21 business days after it is logged. The Tax Ombud says it aims to resolve accepted complaints within 15 business days, although some matters may take longer. Complaint or tax dispute: which one do you need? Use a complaint when SARS has exceeded a service period, lost documents or failed to resolve an operational issue. Use a Request for Correction, objection, remission request or other dispute process when you disagree with the amount assessed, a penalty or a SARS decision. Filing a complaint does not extend a legal deadline for lodging an objection. Beware of fake SARS refund messages Refund season attracts phishing messages. SARS says it will never ask for your password, OTP, banking PIN or eFiling login details by email, SMS, social media or telephone. It also says it will not request banking details through an unsolicited email or SMS or send a link to a bank's website. Do not pay anyone to “release” a refund. Open eFiling, the MobiApp or the official SARS website yourself instead of using a link in a message. Trending Now US Democrats' Rwanda Record: Peaceful Change and Congo Sovereignty . Tax and Revenue SARS Auto Assessment 2026: How to Check and What to Do . ADVERTISEMENT Frequently asked questions Does an ITA34 showing a refund mean the money has been released? No. It means the assessment has calculated a credit, but payment may still be subject to bank validation, verification, audit, outstanding-return and debt checks. Check the ITSA for an electronic-refund entry and payment date. Is SARS verification the same as an audit? No. Verification checks the return against supporting information. An audit is a more extensive examination and may take substantially longer. When does the 21-business-day verification period begin? SARS measures it from the date it receives all required supporting documents. If documents are incomplete or SARS requests more information, the practical timeline may extend. Can SARS take my refund for old tax debt? SARS may apply some or all of the credit to outstanding tax debt before releasing any remaining amount. Check the ITSA for the transactions and balances. Can a refund be delayed because I did not file an old return? Yes. SARS states that a refund will not be paid until all outstanding required returns have been submitted. What is the SARS refund contact number? The SARS Contact Centre number is 0800 00 7277 . The separate Complaints Management Office number is 0800 12 12 16 . Obtain a case number before escalating an overdue operational issue. Can I go directly to the Tax Ombud? Normally, you must first use SARS's complaints-resolution mechanism. The Ombud may accept a matter earlier only where compelling circumstances apply, such as undue hardship, a systemic issue or an unreasonable prospect of resolution through the normal process. The bottom line Start with the ITSA and refund-status service, not the amount on the assessment alone. Most delayed refunds can be traced to one of seven issues: wrong bank details, bank verification, return verification, multiple-year review, audit, outstanding returns or tax debt. Respond to official document requests promptly, keep proof of submission and get a SARS case number if the relevant service period has passed. Escalate a service delay through the complaints process, but use the formal dispute route if the real disagreement is with the assessment itself. Official sources SARS: What could delay my refund?
