French Judges Dismiss Case Against Agathe Habyarimana French judges dismiss genocide conspiracy case against Agathe Habyarimana after 17 years, citing no evidence and reshaping Rwanda’s historical narrative. Published: August 21, 2025 at 5:21:43 PM Modified: September 11, 2025 at 12:54:44 AM Written By | Guerson Nabushi Nyonkourou Political Analyst Guerson Nabushi Nyonkourou French magistrates have dismissed long-running charges against Agathe Habyarimana, the widow of Rwanda’s former president, saying there is no evidence to indict her for conspiracy to commit genocide. The decision, announced in Paris on 21 August 2025, comes after more than 17 years of investigation. Judges concluded that Habyarimana, 82, was primarily a victim of the 1994 events rather than an organizer, ending one of the most politically sensitive judicial files linked to the Rwandan genocide. Judges Cite Lack of Evidence Ten investigating judges ruled that the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support an indictment. Habyarimana had lived under the status of an “assisted witness” since 2016, but will now face no charges. READ: Kagame Escapes U.S. Case Over 1994 Plane Attack The 80-page ruling highlighted that she was evacuated from Rwanda on 9 April 1994, just three days after her husband, President Juvénal Habyarimana, was killed in the plane attack that triggered mass killings. Judges underlined her “situation of vulnerability” rather than command responsibility. Part of a Wider Judicial Pattern The ruling mirrors earlier acquittals at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). In 2009, Agathe’s brother, Protais Zigiranyirazo, was cleared on appeal after judges cited “serious misinterpretation of evidence.” Colonel Théoneste Bagosora, often described as the “mastermind of genocide,” was acquitted of conspiracy charges. These outcomes have raised questions among legal scholars about the reliability of earlier prosecutions that shaped Rwanda’s post-1994 narrative. Family Welcomes Decision Jean-Luc Habyarimana, the couple’s son, called the ruling “historic” in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. “Finally, the French justice breaks a taboo of the RPF narrative,” he wrote. “After 17 years of investigation , there is zero evidence of a secret plan to commit genocide and zero evidence of an ‘Akazu’ clan led by my mother.” He added that the verdict sets legal precedent and signals that “the next taboo to be judged will be the April 6, 1994, attack” on the presidential plane. Reassessing Historical Narratives For decades, Rwanda’s post-genocide government has promoted the theory of an “Akazu” clan, a small circle around the presidential family accused of planning the killings. The Paris judgment, however, states there was no credible evidence that such a structure was led by Agathe Habyarimana. International observers say the case could mark a turning point in how history is reassessed. Some analysts note that France’s move may encourage broader debate over unresolved questions, including responsibility for the 1994 plane attack. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has long urged for balanced and transparent assessments of the Rwandan crisis, especially given Kigali’s role in eastern Congo. Several UN reports have linked the M23 rebel group to Rwandan military support, allegations Kigali denies. By closing this case, French justice has emphasized the importance of evidence-based rulings rather than politically influenced prosecutions. For Kinshasa, the decision reinforces calls for regional justice systems to address crimes transparently, protecting sovereignty and promoting stability. The dismissal does not erase the wider legacy of the genocide, but it does raise significant questions about accountability and historical narratives. With the case closed, international focus may increasingly turn to unresolved files, such as the circumstances of the 1994 plane crash and ongoing instability in the Great Lakes region. Background: Agathe Habyarimana Case 6 April 1994: President Juvénal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down over Kigali. 9 April 1994: Agathe Habyarimana evacuated from Rwanda to France. 2008: ICTR convicts Protais Zigiranyirazo, Agathe’s brother, later overturned in 2009. 2016: French judges grant Agathe “assisted witness” status, not full indictment. 21 August 2025: French judges dismiss case, ruling no evidence of genocide conspiracy. President William Ruto of Kenya sent Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi with a special message to DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, aiming to resolve a year-long standoff exacerbated by the detention of two Kenya Airways staff. The tensions, which led Kenya Airways to suspend its flights to the DRC, began to ease after the airline staff were released and flights resumed. The Thursday meeting, which included key officials from both nations, concluded with a series of agreements expected to bolster trade and cooperation. Mudavadi, who also serves as Kenya’s Foreign Affairs minister , praised President Tshisekedi's role in amicably settling the dispute and expressed optimism for strengthened bilateral relations. Nicki Minaj Draws Criticism After Comment About JD Vance at TPUSA Nicki Minaj faced backlash after referring to JD Vance as an “assassin” while speaking at a Turning Point USA event. Published: December 22, 2025 at 12:54:42 PM Modified: December 22, 2025 at 12:58:28 PM Written By | Witty Pascal Entertainment Editor Witty Pascal Nicki Minaj sparked controversy over the weekend after making an offhand remark about Vice President J.D. Vance during a public appearance at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference. The rapper was participating in an onstage conversation with Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, when she mistakenly referred to Vance as an “assassin” while praising political figures she described as role models. The comment appeared to be unintentional, as Minaj paused mid-sentence and visibly reacted to the slip, prompting murmurs from the audience. The exchange occurred as Minaj was addressing young attendees and discussing her growing engagement with political issues. Moments earlier, she had spoken favorably about President Donald Trump and encouraged independent thinking among supporters. The incorrect reference to Vance, however, briefly shifted the tone of the event. Erika Kirk responded calmly, telling Minaj that she had “heard everything under the sun,” helping defuse the situation and move the discussion forward. The two continued their conversation, touching on social media criticism and public backlash, with Minaj later stating that she remains focused on positivity and personal growth. The moment drew attention online, particularly given the broader context surrounding political violence. Charlie Kirk was killed in September while speaking on a college campus in what authorities described as a politically motivated attack, a fact that made the remark especially sensitive for some observers. Minaj has not issued a separate statement addressing the comment, though video clips of the exchange circulated widely on social media following the event. This article is based on reporting by TMZ. Published: January 10, 2024 at 2:15:43 AM Modified: January 10, 2024 at 2:36:59 AM A Momentous Victory: President Felix Tshisekedi confirmed for a second term by DRC's Constitutional Court, following a decisive win in the December 20th elections. Inauguration awaits on January 20 The Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) Constitutional Court has officially confirmed the re-election of President Felix Tshisekedi, following the December 20th polls. President Tshisekedi achieved a dominant victory, securing 73.47 percent of the vote, while his main opposition, Moise Katumbi, garnered 18.08 percent. This victory sets the stage for President Tshisekedi's second term in office, with his inauguration scheduled for January 20. The election, however, has been mired in controversy. The opposition and some civil society groups have raised concerns about the election's legitimacy, labeling it a "sham." Issues cited include massive logistical problems, with numerous polling stations opening late or not at all, and voter cards becoming illegible due to smudged ink. These challenges led to the extension of voting into a second day, a move deemed illegal by local observers and civil society organizations. Martin Fayulu, another opposition candidate, described the election as a farce and urged the public not to accept the results. Despite the 18 million people who cast their votes out of 44 million registered voters, representing a 43 percent turnout, the election's chaotic nature, marked by delays, logistical problems, and allegations of irregularities, has cast a shadow over its outcome. The National Episcopal Conference, deploying nearly 24,000 election observers, reported various abuses, including vote buying and voter intimidation, which they believe could have influenced the results in certain areas. This election is significant as it represents only the second peaceful transfer of power in the DRC's history since its independence in 1960. President Tshisekedi first came to power in 2018, in an election also criticized by the opposition and the international community, where many considered Martin Fayulu the legitimate winner ADVERTISEMENT Keep Reading

Entertainment IShowSpeed Arrives in Kenya for Omanyala Race on Africa Tour IShowSpeed has landed in Kenya as part of his “Speed Does Africa” tour, with plans to meet fans and race sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala. Published: January 11, 2026 at 11:07:12 AM Modified: January 11, 2026 at 6:19:25 PM Written By | Witty Pascal Entertainment Editor Witty Pascal American online streamer and content creator IShowSpeed has arrived in Kenya, marking the start of the East African leg of his continental tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa.” The 20-year-old, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., touched down in Nairobi on January 11, 2026, where he was met by enthusiastic fans and a coordinated welcome involving tourism officials. Kenyan authorities framed the visit as an opportunity to showcase the country’s culture, cities, and wildlife to a global digital audience. The Kenya Tourism Board confirmed his arrival through a post on X, welcoming the streamer to the country and highlighting Kenya’s readiness to host the high-energy visit. Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano also acknowledged the visit publicly, describing it as a moment to connect Kenya’s heritage with its growing digital presence. During her remarks, Miano pointed to Kenya’s living traditions, food culture, music, and transport scene as everyday experiences rather than museum pieces. She also encouraged the streamer to sample local dishes such as ugali, nyama choma, and kachumbari during his stay. IShowSpeed’s visit has generated wide discussion online, with reactions ranging from excitement to calls for a more low-key approach. Some users urged authorities to allow the visit to unfold naturally without excessive official staging. The trip is also drawing attention within the regional creator community. IShowSpeed has already been seen in Nairobi alongside Ugandan viral personality Tenge Tenge, with expectations of collaborative content during the tour. One of the most anticipated moments of the Kenya stop is a possible sprint race against Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala. The Kenyan athlete teased the idea on social media, joking that the contest would be decided within the first few steps. If held, the race is expected to attract significant livestream viewership. The Kenya visit forms part of a broader 28-day tour covering around 20 African countries, a journey that is placing a spotlight on African cities, creators, and sporting figures for a global online audience. The attackers, described by authorities as “bandits,” burned market stalls, looted food and abducted several people before fleeing into the surrounding forest. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said the assailants rode motorcycles into the market at about 4:30 p.m. local time, opened fire indiscriminately and set fire to shops. Witness accounts indicate the assault was part of a series of raids that began the previous day in nearby Agwarra and Borgu villages. Residents reported that women and children were among the dead and that the death toll could rise above 40 as bodies are recovered.President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack and ordered Nigeria’s defence chiefs, police and intelligence services to track down those responsible and rescue the abducted victims. In a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the attackers were suspected terrorists fleeing recent airstrikes and vowed they would “face the full consequences” of their crimes.Authorities believe the gunmen came from the National Park Forest along the Kabe district, a known hideout for armed gangs, before attacking the market . Local officials said security forces had been deployed to the area and operations were under way to rescue the abducted residents and restore order . The massacre is part of a broader pattern of banditry in north‑western and central Nigeria, where armed groups target remote communities for looting and ransom. Police and residents noted that the violence began one day after officials announced that schools in Niger State would reopen following the November abduction of more than 300 students from a Catholic school . While the Nigerian government has designated these groups as terrorists and outlawed ransom payments, such kidnappings persist amid reports that some ransoms are still paid. Niger State has been hit particularly hard by this surge in violence. Security forces have struggled to prevent mass killings and kidnappings across the region despite ongoing operations . Published: December 2, 2025 at 2:06:52 PM Modified: December 2, 2025 at 10:33:20 PM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga Luanda has shrugged off its war‑scarred past and reinvented itself as a modern African metropolis. A shimmering bay curves in front of a skyline that fuses Portuguese colonial facades with glass towers, while inland neighbourhoods pulse with market chatter, kizomba rhythms and the aroma of moamba chicken. Choosing where to stay is half the fun. To help you decide, we’ve curated an insider’s list of the top ten areas based on 2025 sources. Expect practical tips, fresh price estimates (USD converted to Congolese francs using the Dec 2025 rate of US$1 ≈ 2 215 CDF ) and at least one verified 2025 social link per neighbourhood. Pack your curiosity! 1. Ingombota (Baixa) Baixa/Ingombota is the capital’s downtown core and the oldest part of Luanda. Statues of old Portuguese fortifications dot the waterfront promenade, while within a few blocks you can visit the Fortaleza de São Miguel and the National Museum of Anthropology . Government offices, banks and international headquarters crowd its streets; the municipality even took the best participation award at Angola’s 2025 Municipalities and Cities Fair (FMCA) . By day, office workers fill cafés and pastelarias, and by night the area’s bars and clubs buzz although you’ll need patience for the heavy traffic and caution when exploring after dark . Expect to pay upwards of US$281 (≈ 622 925 CDF) per night for upscale hotels like EPIC SANA Luanda . Cheaper guesthouses exist but often sacrifice amenities. Local tip: stroll or jog along the Marginal waterfront at sunrise before the commuter chaos sets in, then try a bowl of calulu (fish stew) at an outdoor restaurant. At night, use a reputable taxi or ride‑hailing service and keep valuables out of sight. For a peek at 2025 glamour, the city’s leading hotel shows off its festive celebrations and awards on Instagram check out the hotel’s reel celebrating its World Travel Awards win. 2. Talatona Talatona’s contemporary business and hospitality district, marked by its vibrant commercial centers, conference venues and polished urban design. If downtown is a swirl of history and horns, Talatona feels like a gated oasis. Located south of the centre, this planned suburb houses embassies, modern villas and Angola’s largest malls. In 2025 it hosted the FIN Summit and other investment forums at the Centro de Convenções de Talatona, where municipal administrator Sandra Caetano Batalha welcomed entrepreneurs and emphasised support for small and large businesses . The suburb will also stage ANGOTIC 2025 , a technology fair promising 150 start‑ups and 25 000 visitors . Wide boulevards, relative safety and nearby international schools make Talatona popular with business travellers and families. Accommodation prices are high the Hotel de Convenções de Talatona charged about US$257.89 (≈ 571 226 CDF) for a December 2025 stay , though apartments can be cheaper. Talatona is removed from heritage sites, so factor in taxi rides to the centre. Local tip: visit during a conference when the area buzzes, or head to the Talatona Shopping mall for imported goods and relaxed cafés. 3. Miramar Elegant frontage of Miramar, reflecting the district’s upscale character, embassy presence and sweeping views over Luanda Bay. Miramar hugs the hillside above the bay and is known for its embassies, consulates and upmarket restaurants. The district’s crown jewel is the InterContinental Luanda Miramar , Angola’s first internationally branded five‑star hotel. IHG boasts that the property offers panoramic Atlantic views from a rooftop pool and the city’s largest event space . The neighbourhood combines modern towers with quiet residential streets leading to the Fortaleza de São Miguel and cultural institutions . Don’t miss sundowners at a rooftop bar, and if you love art, a local eco‑tourism page recently shared a Miramar mural celebrating Angolan culture see the colourful post for inspirationion. Miramar’s vibe is sedate rather than rowdy think diplomats dining on fresh seafood while the sunset bathes the city in golden light. Rates reflect its upscale status. A room at the InterContinental cost about US$262.65 (≈ 581 770 CDF) for a night in December 2025. Mid‑range guesthouses exist but fill quickly. Bring comfortable shoes to navigate the hilly streets, dress modestly and carry Angolan kwanza for taxis and small purchases . 4. Ilha do Cabo (Ilha de Luanda) Ilha do Cabo is a sandy finger jutting into the Atlantic, lined with coconut palms, beach clubs and seafood shacks. Once a fishing village, today it’s Luanda’s weekend playground. Locals and expatriates flock here to sunbathe, jet‑ski or sip caipirinhas at clubs like Miami or Chill Out. Beyond the bars are art galleries, boutique shops and historical landmarks such as Fortaleza de São Miguel Accommodation is limited; boutique hotels and guesthouses average around US$200 (≈ 443 000 CDF) per night. Visit early to avoid weekend crowds, bring cash for market stalls and taxis, and watch belongings on the sand. The island can get noisy at night, so earplugs help. For a sense of the laid‑back vibe, travel vlogger Where In The World Is B posted a playful 2025 reel from Ilha do Cabo documenting his beach‑club hop – watch it for a taste of the scene. 5. Alvalade Aerial view of Alvalade, one of Luanda’s most established residential districts, known for its quiet streets, sports facilities and central-city convenience. North of the centre lies Alvalade, a middle‑class district built in the 1950s. It’s known for broad avenues, pastel‑coloured houses and a relaxed pace. World Travel Index describes Alvalade as a residential, family‑friendly neighbourhood with good schools and parks . You won’t find major museums here, but you will discover local markets, bakeries and one of Luanda’s best restaurants, Pimm’s , which serves Portuguese‑Angolan fusion dishes. Traffic is calmer than in downtown, making Alvalade a pleasant base for longer stays. The four‑star Hotel Alvalade charges about US$215.5 (≈ 477 333 CDF) per night , and budget lodgings are scarce. The area is quieter after dark, so plan to take a taxi to bars elsewhere. Local tip: rent a bicycle from a local shop and pedal through the leafy streets to see everyday Luandan life. Hotel Alvalade’s official Instagram shares mouth‑watering shots of its breakfast buffet and city views a click will whet your appetite. 6. Maianga Maianga sits south‑east of downtown and mixes residential blocks with cultural institutions. World Travel Index notes that the neighbourhood “offers museums, galleries and cultural centres” but can be crowded . On 28 November 2025 the district administration held a meeting to plan Luanda’s 450th anniversary celebrations, underscoring Maianga’s civic pride. Expect lively markets, Afro‑house rhythms pumping from bars and community theatres staging dance and poetry. Hotels here are cheaper than in the centre. The Samba Hotel listed rooms at US$116.84 (≈ 258 801 CDF) for a two‑adult stay in December 2025 . While the area is generally safe, keep an eye on your wallet in busy markets and avoid deserted streets after dark. A recent post from the official Maianga administration shows local leaders preparing for big celebrations – proof that this district pulses with community energy. 7. Maculusso Rooftop perspective of Maculusso, capturing the district’s lively blend of restaurants, hotels and nightlife set against Luanda’s midtown skyline. Wedged between Ingombota and Maianga, Maculusso blends colonial charm with urban flair. A Wanderlog guide describes it as a vibrant neighbourhood mixing culture and modern living , with lively weekend atmospheres and popular dining spots like Kintal da Tia Guida and Restaurante Kandimbanza . Locals gather at these restaurants to eat grilled fish and dance to semba after sunset. The area also hosts boutique hotels and stylish bars. Rooms at the Maculusso Hotel start at about US$184 (≈ 407 560 CDF) , and properties often include complimentary breakfast and 24‑hour reception. Maculusso is small enough to explore on foot but busy with traffic; cross streets carefully. Foodies should explore the small eateries around Rua Comandante Kwenha for authentic Angolan dishes. For a sneak peek, the hotel’s official Instagram regularly posts room tours and dining specials. 8. Benfica (Belas) Aerial landscape of Benfica, showcasing its mix of residential lakeside estates, open spaces and proximity to Belas’ retail and leisure hubs. Farther south lies Benfica, part of the municipality of Belas. It’s not dominated by football fans but by artisans: the Benfica Crafts Market (also called Kifica) has been an institution since the 1990s. According to TAAG’s 2025 destination guide, about 700 vendors display 10 000 artworks daily , offering everything from traditional masks like Mwana Pwo to carved wooden statues . The market is a riot of colour and bargaining, and nearby beaches provide a breezy escape. Hotels are limited; expect around US$100 (≈ 221 500 CDF) for a basic guesthouse. Visit early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds, bring small bills for bargaining, and ask your hotel concierge to arrange a trusted driver. Pickpockets are opportunistic here, so keep valuables secure. 9. Viana Drone view over Viana, highlighting its busy commercial corridors, transport links and rapidly expanding residential zones on the city’s outskirts. Viana, about 20 km east of central Luanda, grew from a railway outpost into the city’s manufacturing and logistics hub. Oceaneering’s August 2025 news release announced that its local subsidiary had been awarded a multi‑year contract to refurbish offshore equipment, with all work to be carried out at the Viana manufacturing facility and by a local workforce . The district also hosts industrial parks, a half‑marathon and occasional music festivals. This isn’t a tourist hotspot, but it’s practical for long‑term workers or travellers seeking budget accommodation. Expect simple hotels around US$90 (≈ 199 350 CDF) per night. Services are basic but functional. Local tip: explore the bustling central market for affordable street food and catch a truck taxi back by sunset, as public transport thins out at night. 10. Kilamba Panoramic shot of Kilamba, Luanda’s large-scale planned urban development featuring orderly residential blocks, green spaces and family-friendly community amenities. Kilamba (also called Cidade do Kilamba) sits about 30 km south of Luanda and was built with Chinese financing after Angola’s civil war. A 2025 South China Morning Post feature recounts how the government slashed apartment prices and offered long‑term mortgages, which finally filled the once‑ghostly towers . Wide avenues, parks and shopping centres give Kilamba a “new town” feel. It’s quiet, spacious and relatively safe ideal for families or expats seeking modern amenities but it lacks the cultural buzz of central Luanda. You’ll find serviced apartments and a few hotels for around US$150 (≈ 332 250 CDF) per night. Because Kilamba is far from downtown, plan for taxis or personal transport; there’s limited public transit after dark. Local tip: Visit the neighbourhood basketball courts, where youth teams often practice Xball Africa’s 2025 Instagram reel filmed at a Kilamba court captures the lively community vibe. It’s proof that even this planned city has its own heart. Practical considerations and final thoughts Luanda is captivating but challenging. Credit cards are increasingly accepted, yet carrying some cash (kwanza or USD) is wise because markets and taxis remain cash‑only. Safety is improving, but avoid walking alone at night and rely on reputable drivers. Public transport is sparse outside the centre, so plan taxi budgets accordingly. Respect local customs: Angolans value courteous greetings, and modest dress is appreciated when visiting religious sites. Whether you crave colonial history in Ingombota, beach vibes on Ilha do Cabo or gated tranquillity in Talatona, Luanda offers a neighbourhood for every mood. Prices are rising, yet compared with other African capitals there’s still value to be found.
