Five months have elapsed since the general election in the Democratic Republic of Congo, yet the capital, Kinshasa, still awaits the formation of a new government. Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, in ongoing discussions with various political parties and figures, faces challenges in establishing a stable administration amid the country's political intricacies. Government Formation Delays in the DRC: An Ongoing Issue The Democratic Republic of Congo is no stranger to prolonged political negotiations following elections. Similar to the 2019 scenario, the current delay underscores a recurring theme in the nation's political landscape. Prime Minister Suminwa is tasked with a herculean job of managing over 300 political parties within President Felix Tshisekedi’s coalition, aiming to condense the Cabinet from 58 to a more manageable 45 ministers. Comparison with Senegal’s Swift Government Formation Contrasting the DRC's slow pace, Senegal showcases a starkly different scenario. Following its March elections, a new government was swiftly in place by April, highlighting the impact of expedient government formation on political stability. The delay in the DRC, as pointed out by MP Godé Mpoy, suggests a need for a more streamlined process in government setups to avoid political and social unease. The Role of Outgoing Ministers and Constitutional Concerns Amidst this transitional phase, the DRC’s President Tshisekedi relies on the outgoing ministers, many of whom continue to serve despite being elected members of parliament. This arrangement, while necessary under the circumstances, has raised constitutional concerns among analysts regarding the dual roles held by these ministers. President Tshisekedi’s Stance on Constitutional Adherence President Tshisekedi, addressing concerns in February, stated his commitment to the nation’s well-being over strict constitutional adherence. “For me, the salvation of the people is the supreme law,” he remarked, highlighting the complex balance between legal frameworks and national welfare needs. As the DRC navigates these challenging waters, the international community watches closely. The formation of a new government is critical not only for domestic stability but also for maintaining international confidence in the DRC’s political processes. The anticipated new government, under Prime Minister Suminwa’s leadership, is expected to be revealed soon, offering hope for a resolution to the ongoing political stalemate. - US Congress Orders Review of M23 as Terrorist Group
U.S. lawmakers have ordered a formal assessment of whether the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group should be declared a foreign terrorist organisation. The U.S. Senate has directed the State Department to determine whether the Rwandan-backed March 23 Movement (M23) and Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) meet the criteria for designation as foreign terrorist organisations. A recent amendment to the 2026 defence bill instructs the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Treasury and Justice departments, to assess both M23 and RSF armed groups and report back to Congress within 90 days. The measure comes as evidence mounts of large-scale abuses by M23 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since seizing the eastern cities of Goma and Bukavu early this year, the rebel group has raided hospitals and abducted more than 130 people , including wounded soldiers and civilians; many were tortured, and some remain missing. United Nations human rights officials described the attacks on the CBCA Ndosho and Heal Africa hospitals in Goma in late February as “gravely concerning” and called for the immediate release of all abductees and documented summary executions and forced disappearances. Human Rights Watch reported that M23 fighters killed at least 21 civilians in Goma on 22–23 February; witnesses said some victims were shot in the head near Katindo military camp and others were dumped at a nearby construction site. The same report noted that medical workers collected more than 50 bodies from the neighbourhood over those two days. READ: NBC Investigation Reveals Rwanda’s Secret Role in Congo Co nflict The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said in August that M23 rebels killed at least 319 civilians, including 48 women and 19 children, in July in North Kivu province. He described the violence as one of the deadliest episodes since the group’s resurgence in 2022. Citing the UN Joint Human Rights Office, the report states that the killings took place in four villages in Rutshuru territory and that most victims were farmers camping in their fields. Other abuses include the forcible transfer of civilians. M23 rounded up as many as 2,000 people from the town of Sake and deported them to Rwanda; researchers called the forced transfers a war crime and said Rwanda’s support makes it ultimately responsible for the abuses. Amnesty International and UN agencies have also documented widespread sexual violence. Survivors recounted gang rapes by M23 fighters and reported that some victims were threatened with death. Earlier reports from Human Rights Watch describe war crimes in 2012–2013, including summary executions of at least 15 civilians, the rape of dozens of women and girls (some as young as eight), and forced recruitment of children. Amnesty International documented further massacres in late 2022, when M23 fighters unlawfully killed dozens of civilians in Bambo and Kishishe. The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect estimates that fighting linked to M23 since early 2025 has killed more than 7,000 people and displaced over half a million. The Congolese government and regional bodies have urged the international community to treat M23 as a terrorist organisation. The group, composed largely of Tutsi fighters and reportedly backed by Rwanda, originally formed in 2012 and reemerged in 2021. The State Department’s review, now mandated by Congress, will examine whether M23’s actions meet the legal threshold for terrorism, namely, that it engages in terrorist activity that threatens U.S. nationals or national security. - East Africa drought crisis deepens as Turkana hunger worsens
Drought in Kenya’s Turkana reflects a wider East Africa hunger crisis as millions face food shortages and limited aid. A deepening drought in Kenya’s Turkana region is exposing a broader East African food crisis, with communities increasingly forced to rely on wild food sources to survive, according to BBC . In north-western Kenya, families who once depended on livestock are now facing collapse of their traditional livelihoods after prolonged dry seasons wiped out grazing land. Many households have lost most of their animals, a critical economic and cultural backbone in pastoralist communities. Across the region, uneven rainfall has failed to reverse the damage caused by consecutive failed rainy seasons, officials say. The crisis extends far beyond Turkana. Across East Africa, an estimated 26 million people in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia are facing extreme hunger, according to humanitarian assessments cited by organisations such as . The World Food Programme has also repeatedly warned that climate shocks and conflict are accelerating food insecurity across the region, stretching already limited aid resources. In Turkana alone, local authorities estimate that more than 320,000 people urgently need food assistance. Nationwide, around three million Kenyans are affected. Yet humanitarian agencies acknowledge that current supplies cannot meet demand. The Kenya Red Cross says food distributions are ongoing, but available resources are insufficient to reach all vulnerable households. With formal support stretched thin, many residents are turning to survival strategies that highlight the severity of the crisis. In some villages, people now depend on fruit from the doum palm locally known as the gingerbread tree as one of the few available food sources. While it can temporarily ease hunger, locals warn it cannot be safely consumed in large quantities. The worsening situation reflects a wider regional pattern where climate variability is undermining food systems across arid and semi-arid zones. According to the , repeated drought cycles are eroding resilience among already vulnerable populations, increasing reliance on emergency aid. Although the Kenyan government and aid agencies have announced plans to scale up food and livestock feed distribution, humanitarian officials caution that recovery will take time. Even recent rains are unlikely to immediately restore water availability or grazing conditions. For communities across Turkana and beyond, the crisis underscores a broader regional challenge: as drought intensifies across East Africa, millions remain at risk of prolonged hunger, with limited resources to respond at the scale required. - Zinoleesky Biography: Real Name, Songs, Gen Z Album & Rise
Zinoleesky biography: explore his real name, disputed birth date, Lagos street-pop roots, biggest songs, awards and 2025 debut album *Gen Z*. Zinoleesky is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose light, elastic voice has helped reshape Lagos street pop. Publicly known as Oniyide Azeez, he moved from online freestyles to Marlian Music, then developed a catalogue built around “Ma Pariwo,” “Kilofeshe,” “Personal” and “Many Things.” His music joins Yoruba and Nigerian Pidgin storytelling to Afropop, amapiano, trap and R&B production without losing its neighbourhood perspective. On X as @zinoleesky01 , he presents the same mixture of confidence and restless movement that runs through his records. His 2025 debut album, Gen Z , turned that flexible sound into his most complete artistic statement. Who is Zinoleesky? Zinoleesky is a Nigerian street-pop and Afropop artist from Agege, Lagos. After gaining attention with social-media freestyles, he signed with Marlian Music in 2019, broke through through melodic hits including “Ma Pariwo” and “Kilofeshe,” and released his debut studio album, Gen Z , in 2025. A fluid street-pop sound built on melody and emotion Zinoleesky’s voice can sound weightless over bright piano chords, then tighten into an urgent Yoruba phrase when a song turns toward pressure, prayer or survival. He is associated with street pop because of his Agege roots, language and themes, but his records rarely stay inside one production formula. A NATIVE essay on Nigerian street pop identified his mellow combination of amapiano and street pop as a distinct lane established by “Kilofeshe.” That description explains why his music travels so easily between street playlists and polished Afrobeats sets. He does not approach amapiano as a South African copy; he uses its spacious percussion to give his high-register melodies room to bend. In a 2025 Numéro Netherlands interview , Zinoleesky described that instinct: “I don’t force it. I flow with the vibe. I mix them based on emotion and message, not formula.” Yoruba language, Agege heritage and artistic identity Yoruba, Pidgin and English connect his songs to Lagos life, while Afropop hooks and R&B phrasing carry the emotion beyond Nigeria. His identity is not a choice between local and global; each supports the other. His identity is not a choice between local and global; each supports the other. Early life, Agege roots and the freestyles that became training Zinoleesky’s publicly reported real name is Oniyide Azeez, though some profiles add the middle name Adigun. Strong music-industry sources connect him to Agege, Lagos, where his early creative circle included fellow young performers such as Lil Frosh. Reliable public evidence does not identify his parents by full name or establish a detailed family history, so those private details should not be filled with repeated blog claims. His birth record is unusually conflicted. Apple Music lists 21 November 1995, many secondary biographies repeat 21 April 2000, while Zinoleesky called himself a “’98 baby” in the 2025 Numéro interview. No exact birthday or age can responsibly be treated as settled. What is much clearer is how he learned to make songs. Zinoleesky and friends posted freestyles and short performances online, turning repetition into public practice. Kizz Daniel, Davido and Naira Marley were among the established artists whose attention helped widen that early visibility. He has said the freestyle habit remains part of his writing process: “Freestyling keeps things raw. Most of my melodies and hooks still start from freestyles.” The method explains why his hooks can sound discovered in the moment even when the final production is tightly controlled. ADVERTISEMENT “Ma Pariwo” and “Kilofeshe”: the breakthrough into national attention Zinoleesky signed with Naira Marley’s Marlian Music in December 2019. The deal gave him a platform, but the songs created the change in scale. “Caro,” featuring Naira Marley, introduced the partnership; “Ma Pariwo” became a sleeper success in 2020. His debut EP, Chrome Eccentric , arrived in December 2020. A contemporary Pulse Nigeria review heard Yoruba folk influence alongside mid-tempo Afropop, Afroswing and amapiano, and rated the project for its cohesion. “Kilofeshe” became the defining record from that period. Its restrained log drums and floating vocal lines offered a smoother alternative to the harder edges often associated with street music. The breakthrough was a sequence: freestyle visibility, a label entrance, “Ma Pariwo,” then a project proving his melodic identity could survive beyond one hit. Listeners can follow that catalogue through Zinoleesky’s verified XTRAfrica songs page . From Grit & Lust to a wider chart presence Zinoleesky spent the next period stretching the formula. Songs such as “Gone Far,” “Loving You,” “Personal,” “Rocking” and “Many Things” balanced romance with ambition, loneliness and the emotional cost of public attention. His delivery remained soft, but the writing increasingly acknowledged pressure. The eight-track Grit & Lust EP, released in December 2022, marked a significant commercial step. TurnTable Charts reported that it debuted at number two on Nigeria’s Official Top 50 Albums chart with 6,200 units, equivalent to 9.3 million domestic streams during its opening week. Every track also entered an aggregate Nigerian singles chart. “Personal” reached the top three and became his strongest domestic chart showing at the time. Recognition followed. Zinoleesky was nominated for Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2020 and joined the 2022 Next Rated nominees alongside BNXN, Ayra Starr, Lojay and Ruger. The official Hollywood Independent Music Awards 2024 record includes him in the Afrobeats/Afropop field, with music-industry reporting identifying him as the winner for “A1 (Feeling Disorder).” Selected achievements include: A 2020 Headies Rookie of the Year nomination A 2022 Headies Next Rated nomination A number-two debut for Grit & Lust on Nigeria’s Official Top 50 Albums chart A 2024 Hollywood Independent Music Awards Afrobeats/Afropop win More than one billion global streams reported by the Gen Z campaign in 2025 Gen Z : a debut album about pressure, escape and growth After two EPs, Zinoleesky released his first studio album, Gen Z , on 25 April 2025. Apple Music’s release record lists 16 tracks and a 44-minute runtime under Marlian Music. The album includes “Most Wanted,” “Gifted,” “Abanikanda,” “Lifestyle,” “Born Survivor” and collaborations with Toosii, Didi B, Ms Banks, Young T & Bugsey, Donae’o and D’Yani. The title names a generation shaped by online visibility, connects the letter Z to Zinoleesky, and describes a restless space where confidence and anxiety coexist. Afropop, trap, R&B, amapiano and alté widen the frame, while Yoruba, Pidgin and Lagos references keep it rooted. In the Numéro interview, he summarised the album’s personal meaning: “Gen Z is an album that reflects my growth mentally, emotionally, spiritually and musically.” That growth is most convincing when the music allows confidence and uncertainty to appear together. XTRAfrica’s “Most Wanted” page captures the album’s outward swagger, while “Gifted” turns toward spiritual pressure and the burden of expectation. The contrast gives Gen Z more depth than a victory-lap debut. ADVERTISEMENT Zinoleesky career timeline Year Event Significance 2019 Built online attention through freestyles and signed with Marlian Music Converted social-media visibility into a professional recording platform 2020 Released “Ma Pariwo,” “Kilofeshe” and Chrome Eccentric Established his melodic street-pop identity and national breakthrough 2021 Released “Gone Far” and expanded his collaboration record Proved the breakthrough could continue beyond one project 2022 Released Grit & Lust Achieved a number-two Nigerian album-chart debut and an all-track chart entry 2023 Appeared on Adekunle Gold’s “Party No Dey Stop” and released “A1” Widened his audience through a major collaboration and award-recognised single 2024 Released “Element,” “Abanikanda” and “Fuji Garbage” Began the transition toward a broader, more experimental debut album 2025 Released debut album Gen Z Turned six years of singles and EPs into a full-length artistic statement 2026 Released “Pepper Me,” “Nostalgia” and “Bundle Bundle (Remix)” Maintained activity after the album through new collaborations and singles Personal journey: privacy, fatherhood and staying connected to home Zinoleesky’s songs reveal more emotion than his public biography reveals private detail. Reliable sources do not establish his parents’ names, height, education history or current relationship status. Repetition elsewhere is not verification. The 2025 Gen Z campaign described him as a first-time father and connected that change to the album’s more reflective writing. No responsible biography needs to name a private child or speculate about the mother without a direct, reliable source. The relevant public fact is the artistic one: fatherhood entered the way his label and interviews described his maturation. The larger tension is between international reach and local identity. Zinoleesky told Numéro that a global audience made him more intentional, but added: “Growth doesn’t mean forgetting where you’re from.” That principle explains why the polish has increased while Agege, Yoruba expression and street-pop memory remain audible. Emerging impact on Nigerian street pop Zinoleesky belongs to a generation that made Nigerian street pop more melodic, more digitally portable and less limited by one beat pattern. His contribution is not that he invented amapiano or Afropop, but that he found a personal balance between their textures and the vocal language of Lagos street music. The success of Grit & Lust demonstrated that the formula could sustain an entire project. Gen Z then pushed it outward through international collaborations and more explicit genre movement. That path has helped make room for artists who want street credibility, emotional openness and pop accessibility without treating them as opposites. Public tracking showed approximately 2.5 million Spotify monthly listeners on 18 July 2026. The changing figure still indicates substantial reach more than a year after the album. 2026 releases and future direction Zinoleesky remained active in 2026. “Pepper Me,” with KFMD and Qing Madi, arrived in April and has a live XTRAfrica song page . “Nostalgia” followed, while Apple Music lists Mistikay and Zinoleesky’s “Bundle Bundle (Remix)” as a 24 July release. The run suggests a collaborative post-album phase. No next studio album has been officially confirmed. What is verified is his direction: more fusion, wider storytelling and production that can travel without erasing home. The most interesting question is whether the next full project will deepen the reflective writing of “Gifted” and “Fuji Garbage” or lean harder into the global club energy of his collaborations. Nigerian lawmakers are proposing a bill to limit the central bank's control over economic policy. The bill, currently in the Senate, seeks to establish a committee headed by the finance minister to coordinate monetary and fiscal policies. This proposal comes as Nigeria grapples with a 28-year high inflation rate of 33.69% in April, amid sluggish economic growth and currency issues. The central bank would still manage monetary policies, but the new committee would oversee the coordination of both monetary and fiscal policies. - Authorities to Review Safety After Chapman’s Peak Off-Road Incident
Chapman’s Peak Drive reopened after an off-road incident. EMS treated two people; authorities are expected to review safety conditions. South African Authorities are expected to review safety conditions along Chapman’s Peak Drive after a vehicle went off the road on the seaside of the pass on Sunday, prompting an emergency response and a temporary closure of the route. No fatalities were reported, and the road later reopened to traffic as reported by IOL . Motorists first experienced delays at both entry and exit points while the scene was assessed. The route was subsequently closed, with drivers advised to use alternative roads until emergency services completed their work and the area was deemed safe. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said rescue teams responded earlier in the day. EMS spokesperson Simoney Regter confirmed that one patient was extracted by rescue teams and transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care, while a second person was assessed and treated at the scene. While the circumstances of Sunday’s incident were not detailed in the response, the sequence assessment, closure, extraction and reopening reflects standard risk controls used on steep, exposed mountain passes where emergency access and roadside stability can be limiting factors. Chapman’s Peak Drive has previously been the site of severe off-road crashes. The route’s history includes a fatal incident in March 2021, and a major rescue operation in April 2023 when a vehicle rolled down a steep slope and required specialist extraction. Beyond vehicle incidents, the pass has also been linked to serious collisions involving cyclists, including a tour bus crash reported in August 2025 that resulted in fatalities and serious injuries. ADVERTISEMENT While the circumstances of Sunday’s incident were not detailed in the response, the sequence assessment, closure, extraction and reopening reflects standard risk controls used on steep, exposed mountain passes where emergency access and roadside stability can be limiting factors. Chapman’s Peak Drive has previously been the site of severe off-road crashes. - Tanzania Launches Rail-Lake Trade Corridor to DRC
Tanzania launches the Tabora–Kigoma SGR, Kigoma Port upgrades and four cargo vessels to strengthen trade with DRC and Burundi. Tanzania has launched a major package of railway, port and cargo-vessel projects designed to turn Kigoma into a stronger trade gateway between the Indian Ocean and the Great Lakes region. President Samia Suluhu Hassan laid the foundation stone for the Tabora–Kigoma section of Tanzania's Standard Gauge Railway on July 20, 2026. During the same event in Kigoma, she also launched four new cargo vessels and expansion works at Kigoma Port on Lake Tanganyika. Together, the projects are intended to create a faster transport chain linking Dar es Salaam with western Tanzania, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi. The main project is the 506-kilometre Tabora–Kigoma SGR, also known as Lot Six of Tanzania's modern railway network. Tanzania Railways Corporation says the section includes 411 kilometres of main railway line and 95 kilometres of passing loops and sidings. It will also have 10 passenger stations and two major freight terminals at Uvinza and Katosho. The Citizen reported the value of the rail project at Sh6.31 trillion during the July 20 launch. When the construction contract was signed in December 2022, TRC valued it at $2.21 billion, then equivalent to Sh5.12 trillion. The railway is being built by a joint venture between China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and China Railway Construction Corporation. Construction has passed 10 percent, according to figures reported at the launch, and completion is now scheduled for 2030. This means the ceremony marked the formal launch of the project in Kigoma, not the opening of a completed railway service. Four cargo vessels added to Lake Tanganyika President Samia also launched four cargo vessels intended to increase the movement of goods across Lake Tanganyika. This means the ceremony marked the formal launch of the project in Kigoma, not the opening of a completed railway service. Four cargo vessels added to Lake Tanganyika President Samia also launched four cargo vessels intended to increase the movement of goods across Lake Tanganyika. Each vessel can carry 2,000 tonnes per trip, giving the four vessels a combined capacity of 8,000 tonnes when operating at the same time. Each is about 70 metres long and 15 metres wide. ADVERTISEMENT The vessels were built by Golden Logistics Company Limited. Tanzania Ports Authority Director General Plasduce Mbossa said the government has also reached an agreement with Zijin Mining Group to support the movement of cargo from the DRC through Kigoma. The additional ships are expected to double the number of large cargo vessels operating on the lake from four to eight. Tanzania also plans to add two more vessels, while a contractor is being secured for another ship capable of carrying 3,000 tonnes. Kigoma Port is being expanded The rail and vessel projects depend on Kigoma Port being able to receive larger ships and handle more cargo. Expansion work includes the rehabilitation of the port's 310-metre cargo quay. Work is underway on a 190-metre section while the remaining 120 metres stays open to avoid stopping current operations. The project will deepen the port from 3.5 metres to six metres, allowing larger vessels to dock more safely. Tanzania is also constructing a new 170-metre passenger terminal with capacity for 400 people at a time, compared with the current limit of about 40. Once the work is completed, Kigoma Port's annual cargo-handling capacity is expected to rise from 800,000 tonnes to two million tonnes. The port project is scheduled for completion in 2027. How the new trade corridor will work The strategy is to connect rail, port and lake transport into one route. Cargo arriving at Dar es Salaam Port will be moved inland by SGR through Morogoro, Dodoma and Tabora to Kigoma. At Kigoma Port, goods can be transferred to vessels for delivery across Lake Tanganyika to the DRC, Burundi and other markets around the lake. In the opposite direction, minerals and other exports from eastern DRC could cross the lake from Kalemie to Kigoma, continue by rail to Dar es Salaam and then reach international markets by sea. TPA said Zijin Mining also plans to support facilities at Kigoma Port and the development of a roughly 500-kilometre road connecting the mineral-rich Manono area to Kalemie Port in the DRC. That connection could give producers in eastern DRC another route to global markets instead of relying mainly on longer overland corridors.
