The announcement was made during the 35th Executive Committee Meeting of the North-South Centre, held on 29 October 2025, in the presence of H.E. Samuel Mbemba Kabeya, DRC’s Minister for Human Rights. With this membership, Congo joins a group of African nations already participating in the Centre, including Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Cabo Verde, with Liberia holding associate member status. “This is more than a diplomatic step; it’s a declaration that the DRC under President Tshisekedi is committed to international cooperation, justice, and shared values,” said Minister Kabeya. Published: January 21, 2026 at 8:47:51 AM Modified: January 21, 2026 at 9:03:35 AM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, amid continued speculation that he is considering leaving the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to The PUNCH , Yusuf arrived at the President’s office in the afternoon and left roughly three hours later without speaking to journalists. The report said he is expected to return later in the week to brief the President on the issues raised during the meeting. The visit follows weeks of defection rumours that have repeatedly been delayed since early January. People familiar with the talks had said discussions slowed after Yusuf was said to request a written guarantee of the APC governorship ticket in Kano for the 2027 election, alongside influence over federal appointments linked to Kano and the right to nominate a minister to represent the state in the Federal Executive Council. The same accounts suggested the demands have created friction inside the APC in Kano, including with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who is widely viewed as a potential contender in the 2027 governorship race. Videos recently shared on Yusuf’s verified Facebook page showed him chairing Kano’s first State Executive Council meeting of 2026 at the state governor’s lodge in Abuja. Meanwhile, Yusuf’s political mentor, former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly criticised the reported defection plan, describing it as disloyal and warning of political consequences ahead of 2027. Reports have also said some NNPP figures aligned with Kwankwaso including his son, Mustapha Kwankwaso have threatened to resign if Yusuf formally joins the APC. People also read: Hashim warns APC aims to weaken opposition before Nigeria 2027 poll Separately, Kano APC figure and lawmaker Alhassan Ado Doguwa has claimed in a circulating video that President Tinubu directed the party to pause its electronic membership registration exercise in Kano until Yusuf joins and registers first. The APC has not publicly confirmed the directive, but the claim has been widely reported by Nigerian media. Earlier this month, Tinubu issued an official birthday message for Yusuf, praising his record in office and pointing to urban renewal projects, bridges and road works, as well as an education “state of emergency” the President said had improved outcomes for Kano students in national examinations. • Published: June 4, 2024 at 9:34:06 AM Modified: June 4, 2024 at 9:37:23 AM EFF leader Julius Malema South Africa's recent election has left the ruling African National Congress (ANC) facing a pivotal decision. With only 40% of the vote, the ANC must secure a coalition partner to govern effectively. However, one potential ally, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is seen as problematic due to its perceived ties to apartheid-era economic privileges. The DA, which won 22% of the vote, has been criticized for its alleged defense of economic advantages held by the white minority during apartheid. ANC critics fear that partnering with the DA could reinforce inequalities. Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), warns against such a coalition, accusing the DA of upholding white supremacy. While President Cyril Ramaphosa is open to coalition talks with the DA, significant policy differences, particularly regarding welfare and economic empowerment, pose challenges. The ANC's commitment to black economic empowerment policies clashes with the DA's free-market approach. Alternatively, the ANC could ally with parties like the EFF, which represent the black majority . However, differences over land expropriation and constitutional amendments present hurdles to this option. Despite pressure, ANC chairman Gwede Mantashe emphasizes the non-negotiable nature of the party's empowerment policies, possibly ruling out a coalition with the DA. As negotiations unfold, Malema's warning looms large, urging the ANC to tread carefully in forming alliances that could compromise its commitment to dismantling apartheid-era legacies. This financial injection is earmarked for extensive enhancements in the country's electricity and water supply systems and will also support the improvement of access to food markets. Renewable Energy and Electricity Expansion A substantial portion of the funding, amounting to $523 million, is dedicated to the expansion of Ethiopia's electrical grid. This initiative is set to significantly increase the country's renewable energy capacity, aligning with global sustainable energy goals and addressing local energy needs. Enhancing Food Market Access The World Bank's commitment includes an allocation of $500 million towards two pivotal projects aimed at facilitating the movement of agricultural produce to markets. These projects will focus on improving rural road networks, thereby easing the transport of food, enhancing trade opportunities, and contributing to food security in the region. Addressing Climate and Economic Challenges Ethiopia's journey towards economic recovery is challenged by a spectrum of factors, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of the two-year conflict in the Tigray region, and natural adversities such as droughts, floods, and locust invasions. This financial aid from the World Bank is a timely intervention, aimed at mitigating these challenges and steering the country towards sustainable development. Water Supply and Youth Employment Initiatives The remaining funds from the World Bank loan will be allocated to vital water supply improvement projects and programs designed to employ disadvantaged youth in urban areas. These initiatives are expected to bolster community resilience, improve living standards, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the nation. Favorable Loan Terms World Bank loans are known for their borrower-friendly terms, often featuring low to zero interest rates with repayment periods extending over 30 to 40 years. Réunion leads Sub-Saharan Africa with an average speed of 63.29 Mbps, placing 75th globally, followed by South Africa with 42.42 Mbps at 114th place. Meanwhile, Nigeria, with an average download speed of 27.62 Mbps, has shown improvement by moving up one position in the global ranking from 133rd to 132nd. However, it still lags behind its regional counterparts. Africa's Internet Speed Overview Africa as a whole averaged 14.99 Mbps, making it the region with the second-lowest internet speed globally. Nigerian Government's Broadband Efforts This ranking comes amidst the Nigerian government's ongoing efforts to meet its National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020-2025 goals, spearheaded by the Nigerian Communications Commission. Despite aiming for 70% broadband penetration by 2025, Nigeria has only achieved 43.7% as of December 2023. While Nigeria has shown some progress in improving its internet speed ranking, it still faces significant challenges in catching up with other Sub-Saharan African countries.
