The Ebola response in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is facing growing local resistance after suspected cases passed 900 and protesters attacked treatment facilities in Ituri Province. Authorities say the outbreak is centred mainly in Ituri, where insecurity, displacement and mistrust are complicating public health measures as initially cited by 9news.

The latest violence reflects one of the hardest parts of Ebola control: managing the bodies of suspected victims. Health experts warn that Ebola patients can remain highly infectious after death, meaning burials must often be handled by trained teams instead of relatives.

That requirement has triggered anger in some communities. According to the Associated Press, attackers stormed Mongbwalu General Hospital demanding that bodies of relatives be returned. It was also reported that another treatment site in Rwampara had been burned after families were prevented from retrieving a suspected Ebola victim’s body.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, a rarer form of Ebola for which there is no available vaccine. Another report said that three Red Cross volunteers died from suspected Ebola after likely exposure while managing bodies before the outbreak had been identified.

Congolese authorities have banned funeral wakes and gatherings of more than 50 people in parts of the northeast as they try to reduce transmission. But in a region already affected by armed groups, displacement and weak health services, containment depends not only on medical supplies but also on whether communities trust the response.

The World Health Organization has assessed the risk inside Congo as “very high,” while saying the global risk remains low. Cases have also been reported in North Kivu, South Kivu and neighbouring Uganda, raising concern that insecurity could slow detection and isolation in affected areas.
