A well-known Ugandan musician has been hospitalised with serious injuries after his partner allegedly drove a car into him outside a bar in Kampala.
Douglas “Weasel” Mayanja – a former member of the Goodlyfe duo and younger brother of celebrated singer Jose Chameleone – is being treated at Nsambya hospital after suffering severe injuries to both legs. Police say the incident happened in the early hours of 7 August outside Shan’s Bar & Restaurant in the upscale suburb of Munyonyo following a heated row.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Weasel’s long-time partner, Rwandan socialite Sandra Teta, was arrested on suspicion of “unlawfully wounding” the singer and is being held at Kabalagala police station.
According to police statements, Ms Teta allegedly drove a Mercedes-Benz at Mr Mayanja, knocking him to the ground and fracturing his legs. The vehicle involved has been impounded as part of the inquiry.
Witnesses told officers that the couple began arguing at home and that Ms Teta later followed Mr Mayanja to the bar, where the confrontation escalated. In a police interview quoted by local media, Ms Teta said she and the singer had quarrelled earlier in the day and that he had chased her and their children out of their home. She claims she sought help from his parents but was told to return home; when she confronted him again at the bar, she allegedly drove into him during another altercation.
Police spokesman Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest and said investigators believe Mr Mayanja was hit multiple times. “Our officers have checked on him at Nsambya hospital and been informed that his life is out of danger, but he has multiple fractures,” Mr Onyango told local reporters.
Mr Mayanja was initially taken to Mukwaya hospital but later transferred to Nsambya for specialist care. Footage of the incident circulating on social media has fuelled debate in Uganda, with many fans expressing shock and concern.
The couple’s relationship has been volatile, drawing media attention in the past for domestic disputes. This latest episode has reignited discussions about domestic violence in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
Neither Ms Teta nor her legal team has issued a public statement. Police say the case is being treated as a criminal matter and not as a traffic violation, and further details will be released once investigations are complete
