Vinka Biography: Real Name, Songs, Family & Music Career

Vinka is a Ugandan Afropop and dancehall singer, songwriter and performer who transformed experience behind the scenes into a successful recording career. Born Veronica Nakiyingi Luggya, she first worked as a dancer and artist manager before Swangz Avenue recognised that her energy belonged at the front of the stage.

Her breakthrough songs include “Level,” “Malaika,” “Chips Na Ketchup,” “Love Doctor,” “Bebe” with INNA and “Bailando.” She also uses her official X account to connect with listeners. By 2026, Vinka was still expanding a catalogue built around movement, bold visual style and accessible East African pop.

Early Life and Creative Roots

Vinka grew up between Kazo in Kawempe, where she stayed with her father, and Bweyogerere, where she later lived with her mother. Her parents were separated. She attended Hormisdallen School in Kamwokya and Rubaga Girls’ Secondary School before studying Tourism Administration at Makerere University. Performance was present before recording. At school she served as an entertainment prefect, danced and sang, then joined friends in the NTV Hot Steps dance competition after Senior Six. The group won. That background gave her a working knowledge of timing, movement and audience attention long before she had a hit single.

She later danced for established performers, including Jackie Chandiru, and worked around Swangz Avenue events. Her connection with the company led co-founder Julius Kyazze to offer her an artist-management role. While still at university, she combined that work with dancing before choosing to manage Irene Ntale. She also handled other acts, voiceovers and commercial jingles, learning how songs, promotion and performance fit together.

Vinka told OkayAfrica in a 2025 interview that the move into singing began when her boss rejected her suggestion to scout for an energetic artist.

She initially thought he was joking. After finishing university, however, she accepted the opportunity and treated music as a profession.
