Tshisekedi Chairs Strategic Meeting on Security and Parliament
President Tshisekedi chairs a key meeting on Uvira’s security crisis and Congo’s parliamentary session, stressing unity, reforms, and sovereignty.
9/8/25, 7:58 PM
This Monday at the African Union City in Kinshasa, President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo brought together the heads of the nation’s key institutions for an inter-institutional meeting. The focus was on two pressing matters: the security crisis in the East and preparations for the upcoming parliamentary session.
Leaders Around the Table
The meeting gathered:
Vital Kamerhe, President of the National Assembly
Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, President of the Senate
Judith Suminwa, Prime Minister
Dieudonné Kamuleta, President of the High Council of the Judiciary
This gathering of political heavyweights signals the government’s intent to speak with one voice on national challenges.
Security in the East: Spotlight on Uvira
The President placed special attention on Uvira in South Kivu, where insecurity continues to threaten civilians. Kamerhe reported that Tshisekedi is sending a government mission to Uvira to seek concrete solutions. This reflects Kinshasa’s growing determination to address instability driven by armed groups and foreign interference.
Parliamentary Session: A Call for Unity
Turning to Parliament, Tshisekedi urged the leaders of both chambers to guarantee a peaceful and constructive session. His call was clear: focus debates on national priorities, protect sovereignty, and reinforce human rights and territorial integrity.
Vital Kamerhe emphasized that the President wants a legislative return centered on the needs of the Congolese people, particularly those enduring conflict in the East.
Driving Reforms Forward
The meeting also touched on accelerating reforms across sectors. Tshisekedi insisted on closer collaboration between the government and Parliament, coordinated through the Minister in charge of parliamentary relations. The goal is to give “new impetus” to ongoing reforms that affect daily life in Congo.
Kamerhe concluded by noting Tshisekedi’s dual strategy: strengthen internal cohesion while intensifying diplomatic efforts abroad. At a moment when Congo faces both internal threats and external pressures, the Head of State is keen to project stability, sovereignty, and progress.
