The Sacred Union has launched national consultations on constitutional reform in the Democratic Republic of Congo, calling on political groups, civil society, faith organizations, unions, academics, lawyers and Congolese in the diaspora to submit proposals by May 20, 2026, according to a statement reported by 7sur7.cd.
In the statement, signed by Sacred Union permanent secretary and spokesperson André Mbata Betukumesu Mangu, the presidential platform said the consultation drive follows expressions of support for reforming the February 18, 2006 Constitution in Kinshasa, across the provinces and within the Congolese diaspora.
The initiative also says a technical commission will be set up after submissions are received to review and synthesize the proposals before a final report is sent to President Félix Tshisekedi.
The move comes after months of public debate over whether the 2006 Constitution should be revised or replaced. Earlier reporting showed that members of the Sacred Union and opposition figures have sharply disagreed over the issue, with André Mbata among the most visible backers of constitutional change.
By formally inviting proposals from both supporters and non-partisan actors, the Sacred Union is trying to widen the discussion beyond party politics and frame the next phase as a broader national consultation.
Whether that process leads to an official revision track, however, remains politically sensitive in a debate that has already exposed deep divisions across the Congolese political class.
