President Yoweri Museveni says he rejected an invitation to join celebrations for Arsenal’s Premier League title victory, using the moment to urge Ugandan leaders to focus on poverty reduction and household incomes, according to Pulse Uganda.
Speaking during the opening of Uganda’s 12th Parliament on Monday, May 25, 2026, Museveni said some associates had invited him to celebrate Arsenal’s first league title in 22 years. He said he declined, arguing that public leaders should not be distracted from domestic economic priorities.
Arsenal were confirmed as 2025/26 Premier League champions after Manchester City failed to close the gap, ending the club’s long wait for another league title under manager Mikel Arteta.
The victory triggered major celebrations among Arsenal supporters in Uganda, where the club has one of the country’s most visible Premier League fan bases. Reports said fans held processions, watch parties and street celebrations in several towns, reflecting the strong pull of English football across the country.
Museveni said leaders should instead prioritise accountability and programmes aimed at improving household income, asking why officials would celebrate European football clubs while many citizens still lacked reliable income.
The remarks placed Arsenal’s title celebrations inside a wider political message: foreign football may command huge public attention in Uganda, but Museveni said government work should remain focused on poverty, service delivery and economic mobilisation.
