NAIROBI, Kenya — 30 August 2026: The Kenya Airports Authority warned passengers shortly before midday on Sunday that some departing flights were delayed at airports across the country. KAA advised travellers to contact their airlines for the latest flight status and to plan their journeys around the disruption.

The authority did not identify every affected airport, publish a cancellation list or state when normal departures would resume. Reporting from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport linked the delays to a go-slow involving KAA and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority staff, but KAA’s own passenger notice did not state the cause.

Are flights delayed at Kenyan airports today? Yes. KAA says some departing flights are experiencing delays and has urged passengers to confirm their individual flight status with the operating airline. The authority has not announced a nationwide closure or a complete cancellation list, so travellers should not assume that every flight or airport is affected.

What KAA told passengers

KAA said it was working with aviation agencies, airlines and other stakeholders to manage the disruption and keep airport operations moving. The Standard reported that the authority promised further updates as the situation developed.

The passenger instruction is straightforward: contact the airline operating your flight before leaving for the airport. The Eastleigh Voice account also carried KAA’s public contact details and said the authority had not disclosed the cause in its notice.

Travellers should check the airline’s app, booking page, SMS or email notices and official customer-service channels. A flight number is more useful than a route alone because different departures on the same route may have different operating conditions. Kenya Airways maintains an official travel-alerts page, although passengers should also open the booking-specific flight-status tool.

What is reported at JKIA and Wilson Airport

The Star reported at 11:56 AM EAT that several flights scheduled from around 8:00 AM had remained on the ground for hours at JKIA. It attributed the disruption to a go-slow involving KAA and KCAA employees and reported access problems at JKIA and Wilson Airport.

A separate Kahawatungu report described passengers waiting for departure information and airlines attempting to manage the impact. These reports support the existence of operational delays at Kenya’s main hub, but they do not establish that every airport, airline or flight is disrupted.

KAA’s notice referred broadly to “our airports,” while the strongest on-the-ground reporting focused on JKIA. Passengers at Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Malindi and other KAA-managed airports should therefore verify their own departures instead of applying the Nairobi reports automatically.

What remains unclear

No named union statement explaining the reported go-slow was located by the verification cutoff. KAA did not say how many departures were delayed, how long the average delay was, whether arrivals were affected or whether any flights had been cancelled.

That uncertainty makes sweeping claims unsafe. The available evidence supports “some departing flights are delayed,” not “Kenya’s airports are closed.” It also does not support blaming a specific worker dispute until KAA, KCAA or the relevant union issues a detailed account.

The disruption comes after an earlier aviation labour process, but the current notice must be reported on its own verified facts. XTRAfrica has covered wider pressure on African aviation from fuel and supply risks and a separate Kenya Airways suspension involving Kinshasa. Neither earlier story proves the cause of Sunday’s delays.

Practical steps for passengers

Passengers due to depart on Sunday should keep their booking reference available, take screenshots of airline notices and retain receipts for expenses caused by a confirmed delay. International travellers should allow extra time for check-in and security but should avoid travelling to the airport solely on the assumption that a delayed flight has been cancelled.

If an airline changes a departure, ask it directly about rebooking, connections and baggage handling. KAA manages airport infrastructure, while the operating airline controls the passenger’s booking and is the correct source for flight-specific changes.

The next verifiable updates will be a KAA or KCAA statement explaining the disruption, airline-specific schedule changes, and confirmation that normal operations have resumed.
