The Department of Home Affairs public online status checker is currently suspended. You can still check a South African passport application by calling the Home Affairs Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90, or by logging into eHomeAffairs if you applied online.

If you applied in person, wait for the published processing time, then collect at the same Home Affairs office or bank branch where your biometrics were taken.

Check that the address ends in dha.gov.za before you enter any personal details.

How to check by phone

The official DHA status page currently tells applicants to use the Contact Centre while the online checker is down.

  1. Call the Department of Home Affairs toll-free hotline on 0800 60 11 90.

  2. Give your 13-digit ID number.

  3. Ask the consultant for the status of your passport application.

You can also email the Contact Centre at hacc@dha.gov.za.

How long a passport takes

These are the Department of Home Affairs published turnaround times, not a live tracker:

  • Ordinary 32-page tourist passport (16 years or older): 13 working days

  • Maxi 48-page tourist passport (16 years or older): 13 working days

  • Minor tourist passport (15 years or younger): 18 working days

  • Applications lodged outside South Africa: at least six to eight months

If that period has passed and you have not been able to collect, call 0800 60 11 90 or return to the office or bank branch where you applied.

Collecting your passport

You generally collect from the same Home Affairs office or participating bank branch where your biometrics were captured.

Take:

  • Your identity document

  • The barcoded confirmation letter, if you have one

  • Any appointment or payment proof from eHomeAffairs

Do not travel to collect until you have confirmation from Home Affairs, your branch, or the Contact Centre.

Common problems

The online status page shows no form. That is expected while the Status Verification service is suspended. Use eHomeAffairs or the hotline instead.

You cannot log in to eHomeAffairs. Use the ID number and password you registered, then complete the SMS one-time PIN. If the cellphone number has changed, call 0800 60 11 90.

You applied abroad. Use the South African embassy or consulate where you applied. DHA says applications outside the country take at least six to eight months.

Someone offers to track it for a fee. Do not pay. Official checks are through eHomeAffairs, the DHA website, or 0800 60 11 90.

Scam warning

Never pay an unofficial person, WhatsApp number or social-media page to track a Home Affairs passport. Do not share one-time PINs, eHomeAffairs passwords or copies of your ID with unknown agents.

FAQs

Can I check with only my ID number on the DHA website? Not while the public Status Verification service is suspended. The official status page currently points you to 0800 60 11 90.

I applied online. Do I still need to visit a branch? Yes. eHomeAffairs does not replace the in-person biometric visit. You still collect at the selected office or bank branch.

Where do I start a new application? Use eHomeAffairs, or see XTRAfrica's Home Affairs online ID and passport guide. For Smart ID login problems, use the Smart ID online application login guide.
