How to check
Open the official Do you need to submit a return? page.
Answer the questions for 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2026. To change an answer, refresh the page.
If any first-screen point applies — trade, foreign work or employment, an allowance, foreign assets over R250 000, capital gains, a return requested by SARS, or micro-business turnover tax — you likely must file.
Log in to eFiling or the MobiApp. Check whether SARS issued an ITR12 or an auto-assessment.
If you received an auto-assessment SMS or email between 1 and 12 July 2026, review it. If it is complete and correct, no ITR12 is needed.
If you were not notified by 12 July 2026, SARS says you were not auto-assessed. If the checker says you must file, prepare to submit from 13 July 2026.
If you cannot finish online, call 0800 00 7277 or book a SARS appointment.
Who must submit a 2026 return
You must submit an ITR12 for the 2026 year of assessment if, during that year, you:
Are a resident and carried on any trade (other than only as an employee) in or outside South Africa
Are not a resident and carried on any trade (other than only as an employee) in South Africa
Earned employment income from more than one employer that exceeds the tax threshold
Received remuneration for services rendered outside South Africa
Are a resident and had a capital gain or capital loss of more than R40 000
Are not a resident and had capital gains or losses from disposing of an asset
Received a taxable allowance or advance (such as travel, subsistence, public office, computer or cellphone) and your gross income exceeds the tax threshold
Were granted a company-car benefit and your gross income exceeds the tax threshold
Received an income tax return from SARS, or SARS asked you to submit one, regardless of how much you earned
Are a resident who held foreign-currency funds or foreign assets worth more than R250 000 at any time; had foreign income or capital gains attributed to you; held participation rights in a controlled foreign company; or had taxable turnover
Are a non-resident who received South African interest and were in South Africa for more than 183 days in the 12 months before the interest, or the debt is linked to a South African permanent establishment
Received local interest (other than from a tax-free investment) above R23 800 if you are under 65, or R34 500 if you are 65 or older
SARS defines “trade” here as every profession, trade, business, calling, occupation or venture, including letting property, but not employment.
2026 tax thresholds
These are the levels of taxable income above which income tax generally becomes payable. They are not the same as the R500 000 filing exemption.

Younger than 65: R95 750
65 to under 75: R148 217
75 or older: R165 689
Who may not need to submit
You must still register for income tax. You are not required to submit a 2026 return if your gross income consisted only of one or more of the following, and you have no deductions to claim:
Remuneration from one employer for the full year, PAYE correctly withheld, not more than R500 000, with no allowance or advance, no employer-provided vehicle, and no pay for foreign services
South African interest (not from a tax-free investment) of not more than R23 800 if you are under 65, or R34 500 if you are 65 or older (R23 800 for a deceased estate)
Exempt dividends, and you were a non-resident for the whole year
Amounts from a tax-free investment
A single lump sum from a pension, provident, preservation or retirement annuity fund, with tax withheld under a SARS directive
You also do not need to submit if SARS notified you in writing that you qualify for automatic assessment, and the income, exemptions, deductions and rebates on SARS records are complete and correct.
Do not use the R500 000 figure on its own. If you want to claim medical, travel, retirement-annuity or other deductions, you generally need to file.
Auto assessment vs filing
An auto-assessment is SARS working out your tax from employer, bank, medical-scheme and other third-party data.
Auto-assessment notices: 1 to 12 July 2026
If you agree and everything is correct: no ITR12 is needed
If something is missing or wrong: edit and submit the ITR12 by your deadline
If you got no SMS or email by 12 July 2026: you were not auto-assessed
You can check auto-assessment status on eFiling, the MobiApp, or the SARS Online Query System. See how to check a SARS Auto Assessment.
Deadlines for Filing Season 2026
Auto assessments: 1 July to 12 July 2026
Non-provisional individuals: 13 July to 23 October 2026
Provisional taxpayers: 13 July 2026 to 22 January 2027
Trusts: 19 September 2026 to 22 January 2027
If you must submit and you miss the deadline, SARS may charge an administrative penalty.
Common problems
The checker says no, but SARS sent you a return.
If SARS issued or requested a return, you must submit.
You earned under R500 000 from one job.
You still need to check allowances, a company car, foreign work, extra income, and any deductions you want to claim.
You were auto-assessed.
Compare the assessment with your IRP5 and other certificates. If it is wrong, file an ITR12. Do not ignore it.
You have two employers or a side hustle.
That is not single-source remuneration. You usually must file.
You cannot log in.
Use the official eFiling login help, or book a SARS appointment.

SARS will not ask for your password, OTP, banking PIN or eFiling login by email, SMS, social media or phone
Do not pay anyone to “check if you must file” or to release a refund

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to file if I am registered for tax?
Not always. Registration and filing are different. Use the official checker.
What if I am unemployed?
If you had no income, including pension, interest or capital gains, you may not need to file. If SARS sent you a return, submit it. If you are unsure, file.
Does an auto-assessment replace my return?
Yes, if SARS selected you and the assessment is complete and correct. You do not then submit a separate ITR12.
What if I am unsure?
SARS recommends that you file.
Is there a fee to check or file?
SARS does not list a charge to use the official questionnaire, eFiling or the MobiApp. Anyone asking you to pay a private fee to “unlock” filing is a red flag.
