What Is the Second Chance Matric Programme?
The Second Chance Matric Programme is a Department of Basic Education support initiative for candidates who have not yet obtained a matric qualification or who want to improve their results.
It supports candidates preparing for:
The National Senior Certificate
The amended Senior Certificate
A second examination opportunity
Subject improvement
Completion of outstanding subjects
The programme does not automatically register a person for an examination.

Who Can Use the Programme?

Eligibility for examination registration depends on the route the candidate is following.
National Senior Certificate Candidates
Former National Senior Certificate candidates may be able to register for a later examination opportunity when they:
Need to complete outstanding subjects
Want to improve subject results
Were absent from a paper for a valid reason
Were unable to complete an examination because of illness, injury, a death in the immediate family or another accepted circumstance
Qualify under the Multiple Examination Opportunity arrangement
Need to improve their overall achievement status
Candidates absent for an accepted reason may be required to submit documentary evidence through the registration centre.
The provincial education department or examination authority makes the final decision on eligibility.
Amended Senior Certificate Candidates
The amended Senior Certificate provides an adult matric route.
The Department of Basic Education states that admission may include:
Adults aged 21 or older with a Grade 9 report, old Standard 7 or an equivalent qualification
Adults aged 21 or older with an incomplete Senior Certificate
Adults aged 21 or older with an incomplete National Senior Certificate
Adults who already hold a qualification but want to improve their results or status
In exceptional cases, out-of-school youth aged 18–21 who could not complete school because of circumstances beyond their control
Exceptional cases for candidates aged 18–21 require approval through the relevant provincial education authority.
An adult with an incomplete National Senior Certificate may choose to complete the NSC as a part-time candidate or convert to the amended Senior Certificate.
The Department warns that a candidate who converts to the amended Senior Certificate may not later return to the NSC route.

Can a Candidate Improve Only One Subject?
A qualifying candidate may be able to register to improve one or more subjects.
The examination authority must confirm:

Whether the subject is offered
Whether the candidate’s previous result remains valid
Which examination cycle applies
Whether additional requirements must be met
Improving one subject does not automatically change the overall certificate status unless the new result satisfies the relevant promotion requirements.
Can Someone Who Never Reached Grade 12 Apply?
The amended Senior Certificate may provide a route for an adult aged 21 or older who has:
Passed Grade 9
Completed old Standard 7
Obtained a recognised equivalent qualification
The person must still meet the full admission and subject requirements.
Out-of-school applicants aged 18–21 are considered only in exceptional circumstances verified by the provincial Head of Department.
