Congolese forces are moving to consolidate control around Mikenge after the army said it retook the South Kivu locality from M23-RDF fighters on Wednesday, June 10, following intense clashes near Minembwe, according to local reports.
The FARDC said the counteroffensive came two days after the locality was occupied. Army spokesman Lieutenant Mbuyi Kalonji Reagan said troops had earlier withdrawn about 10 kilometers toward Kishirita to reduce risks to civilians before launching the operation to regain the area.
Mikenge is viewed as strategically important because of its position near routes leading toward Minembwe. Other Congolese outlets also reported the army’s claim that Mikenge, Kalingi and Kakenge had been recovered after fighting in the highlands of South Kivu.
The fighting follows recent FARDC accusations that the RDF/AFC-M23 coalition and allied groups used drones against positions around Mikenge and nearby areas, claims that remain difficult to independently verify in full.
The situation remains fragile, with broader eastern Congo violence continuing despite diplomatic pressure and ceasefire efforts. The UN has warned that drones and heavy weapons are increasing risks for civilians in North and South Kivu.
