The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo say they will take “all necessary measures” after accusing the RDF/AFC-M23 coalition of carrying out drone attacks on military positions in Mikenge, South Kivu, according to a June 9 report by BETO.

According to the FARDC statement cited in the report, the strikes took place on Monday, June 8, along the Fizi-Uvira axis and caused loss of life and material damage. The army also alleged that the coalition was supported by Twirwaneho and RED Tabara, though those claims have not been independently confirmed.

The allegations come as eastern DRC continues to face escalating violence involving heavy weapons and drones, a trend the United Nations has warned is increasing risks for civilians in North and South Kivu, according to recent reports.

Mikenge lies in the High Plateaus of South Kivu, an area where insecurity has disrupted civilian movement and humanitarian access. Human Rights Watch has warned that armed actors in the South Kivu highlands have obstructed aid delivery and limited safe passage for civilians.

While reaffirming support for ongoing peace efforts, FARDC said it remains mobilized to defend DRC’s territorial integrity and protect civilian populations. The army said it would respond to any threat targeting national sovereignty.
