Congolese music superstar Fally Ipupa has been elevated to the rank of Knight (Chevalier) in the National Order of the Leopard, one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s highest national honors.

The distinction, conferred by presidential ordinance, recognizes his exceptional contributions to Congolese culture, the global promotion of rumba, and his role as a “worthy son of the nation.”

President Félix Tshisekedi signed the ordinance (No. 26/054), which was read on state television RTNC on June 3, 2026.

The official decoration ceremony took place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Cité de l’Union Africaine in Kinshasa, where Ipupa also received the Gold Medal of Merit in Arts, Sciences, and Letters.

A Prestigious Honor

The National Order of the Leopard, originally instituted in 1966 under President Mobutu, is the DRC’s premier civil and military distinction. It features ranks including Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer, and Grand Cordon.

Though discontinued in its original form in 2002, it continues to symbolize the highest recognition for outstanding service to the nation.

Ipupa joins legendary figures such as the late Papa Wemba, who previously received the same knighthood. In a heartfelt statement, the 48-year-old artist expressed deep gratitude:

It is with immense pride and deep emotion that I receive my admission into the National Order of the Leopard, at the rank of Knight. This distinction goes beyond my person; it celebrates above all Congolese music, our culture, our identity, this force that unites us and elevates us beyond borders.

Who is Fally Ipupa ? From Kinshasa to Global Stages

Born Fally Ipupa Nsimba on December 14, 1977, in Kinshasa, Ipupa rose through the ranks of Congolese music. He began with local groups like Talent Latent before joining Koffi Olomidé’s iconic Quartier Latin International in 1999.

His 2006 solo debut Droit Chemin achieved gold status in weeks, launching a career marked by hits like “Sexy Dance,” “Chaise Électrique,” and albums such as Arsenal de Belles Mélodies, Tokooos, and Formule 7.

Known as the “Prince of Rumba” or “L’Aigle” (The Eagle), Ipupa blends traditional Congolese rumba and soukous with contemporary R&B, pop, and urban sounds.

Milestones include becoming the first Congolese artist to sell out Paris’ Olympia Hall (2007), headlining major venues across Europe and Africa, and selling out the Stade de France in May 2026, a historic achievement that underscored his international stature.

Beyond music, Ipupa serves as a UNICEF National Ambassador and philanthropist, using his platform for social causes.

The distinction comes during one of the most successful periods of Fally Ipupa's career.

In recent months, the singer has continued to expand his international reach, achieving major commercial success in France and selling out some of Europe's biggest venues.

His latest album XX became a major success, while reports celebrated him as the first Francophone African artist to sell out Paris's 80,000-capacity Stade de France on consecutive nights according to BBC News.

Later this year, he is expected to perform at London's O2 Arena, further cementing his place among Africa's leading musical exports.

Beyond celebrating one artist, the award highlights the growing influence of Congolese music around the world.

For decades, Congolese rumba has shaped African music and inspired generations of artists across the continent. Through his success, Fally Ipupa has helped introduce that rich musical heritage to new audiences while modernizing it for a global generation.

Receiving the National Order of the Leopard places him among a select group of public figures recognized for elevating the image of the Democratic Republic of Congo internationally.
