The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported a slight decline in suspected cholera cases, but the latest update still points to Kinshasa as the center of the outbreak, underlining the wider strain that urban epidemics can place on public health systems across the region.

According to figures presented to the government, suspected cholera cases fell from 1,261 to 1,211 during the ninth surveillance week, with eight deaths recorded. Kinshasa alone accounted for 240 new suspected cases and two deaths.

The capital’s continued burden matters beyond Congo because densely populated cities can turn localized outbreaks into longer-running public health emergencies.

In Kinshasa, 84 active cholera patients were being treated in cholera treatment centers, up from 41 a week earlier, even as the national suspected caseload edged lower. Health officials also reported some improvement at Makala Central Prison, where active hospitalized cases declined to six while recovered discharges rose to 187.

The broader risk is not just the number of infections, but the pressure such outbreaks place on treatment capacity, surveillance and sanitation systems. The WHO Africa cholera overview

says the DRC remains among African countries reporting active cholera outbreaks and notes that effective response depends on case management, surveillance, infection prevention and control, stronger water and sanitation services, and public awareness.

Official government reporting also reinforces Kinshasa’s central role in the outbreak. In the Council of Ministers account published by the DRC Primature, authorities said Kinshasa remained the most affected province during the previous reporting cycle, with 245 suspected cases and six deaths.

That official note used slightly different national totals from the report, suggesting the figures may reflect different reporting windows or later revisions, but both sources point to the same core reality: Kinshasa remains the main focal point of the cholera response.

The same government update also noted a fall in new suspected Mpox cases, from 258 to 235 during the ninth week, showing that Congo is still managing multiple epidemic pressures at once. That overlap adds to the strategic importance of sustaining surveillance and rapid response, especially in major urban centers where health systems are already stretched.

For the DRC and its partners, the immediate challenge is clear: a modest national decline is not yet a turning point if Kinshasa continues to anchor transmission and treatment demand. Until case numbers fall more decisively in the capital, the outbreak will remain not only a national health concern but also a regional warning about the vulnerability of fast-growing African cities to waterborne disease.
