Pop singer Britney Spears was arrested in California, according to US court documents. The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday night and involved officers from the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities detained the singer at around 21:30 PT (05:30 GMT). She was later released in the early hours of Thursday morning. Spears is expected to appear before the Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, according to the court documents.

The documents do not specify the reason for her arrest.

Spears remains one of the most successful pop artists in modern music history. Over the course of her career, she has produced several global hits, including “Toxic,” “Everytime,” “Gimme More,” “Womaniser,” “Stronger,” and “…Baby One More Time.”

In January 2024, Spears stated publicly that she would never return to the music industry. Her most recent musical release was a duet with Elton John in 2022.

The singer previously spent 13 years under a conservatorship, which ended in 2021. The legal arrangement placed control of her finances and personal decisions under her father’s authority.

Spears later detailed her experiences during that period in her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, where she reflected on her career and the challenges she faced while under the conservatorship.
