Big Zulu a South African rapper
Big Zulu is a South African rapper, songwriter and record-label founder whose deep isiZulu delivery turned rural memory, taxi-rank experience and maskandi influence into popular hip-hop. Born Siyabonga Nene in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, he built his career through rap battles before songs such as “Donsa Nkabi,” “Mali Eningi” and “Imali Eningi” carried his voice far beyond local stages.
He now records through Inkabi Records while using success to open doors for other artists. Fans can follow Big Zulu on his official Instagram profile and X account, or explore his verified XTRAfrica songs page for music and downloads.
Who is Big Zulu? Big Zulu is the stage name of Siyabonga Nene, a Bergville-born South African artist who began performing in 2009. He rose through rap battles, became known for isiZulu storytelling and founded Inkabi Records. As of 19 August 2026, he is 40 years old.
Sound, craft and awards: rap with a local centre
Big Zulu’s music is immediately recognisable because language is not decoration in it; isiZulu shapes the weight, rhythm and viewpoint of the songs. His low, measured voice can sound conversational one moment and commanding the next. Maskandi phrasing, praise-poetry energy and township hip-hop meet in records about dignity, hardship, ambition and responsibility.
That combination places him naturally within XTRAfrica’s wider African hip-hop catalogue, but his centre of gravity remains KwaZulu-Natal.
The artist’s own explanation of inkabi captures his approach. Rather than treating the word only as its familiar reference to a hired killer, he turns it into a metaphor for lyrical force:
“It’s known in our society that an inkabi kills, but my interpretation of it is that we are killing them with bars and lyrics.” Big Zulu in the Sowetan
That craft has brought measurable recognition. Ushun Wenkabi earned him Best Freshman at the 2018 South African Hip Hop Awards. Three years later, “Mali Eningi” won Best Collaboration at the South African Music Awards. At the 2021 SA Hip Hop Awards, he completed a seven-award sweep that included Best Male, Best Album for Ichwane Lenyoka, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Video for “Mali Eningi,” plus Best Digital Sales and Ubuntu Activism. The published winners list shows that the moment rewarded both artistic reach and community presence.
