Barry Jhay a Nigerian Yoruba-pop singer and songwriter

Barry Jhay is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who carries Fuji phrasing, Yoruba proverbs and prayer into contemporary Afropop. Born Oluwakayode Junior Balogun, he is the son of Fuji pioneer Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, yet his catalogue has developed its own spiritual centre through “Aiye,” “Ori,” “Kabiyesi” and “See Me See God.”

His official X account documents a career that includes a Headies Rookie of the Year win and projects from Barry Back to Barrystar, Vol. 2. The 2026 album places his expressive voice over Fuji, pop, drill and South African-influenced percussion, extending the “Afro-Adura” language that defines his contribution.

Who is Barry Jhay? Barry Jhay is a Nigerian Yoruba-pop singer and songwriter born Oluwakayode Junior Balogun. The son of Fuji pioneer Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, he broke through with “Aiye,” won the 2019 Headies Rookie of the Year award and developed a prayerful, Fuji-influenced catalogue led by Barry Back and the Barrystar albums.

Prayer, Proverbs and Barry Jhay’s Artistic Craft

Barry Jhay’s music often begins where entertainment meets reassurance. He sings in Yoruba and English, drawing on Fuji’s elastic vocal movement while placing his melodies inside modern pop production. The result can sound celebratory, but its recurring subjects are protection, gratitude, destiny, endurance and the difficult work of staying hopeful.

That purpose was already clear when he told Audiomack in a 2021 interview why he resisted making only party records:

“Music is for your spirit and your soul.”

The idea explains “Afro-Adura,” with adura meaning prayer in Yoruba. It describes the spiritual language running through “Ori,” “Kabiyesi,” “The Lord’s Prayer” and “See Me See God.” XTRAfrica’s Barry Jhay songs page places that catalogue under one artist route, while its Afropop collection shows the wider field.

His range is wider than prayer songs. Amapiano entered “Ayewada”; pop and street rhythms drive much of Barry Back; and the 2026 album tests 3-step, drill and emo-pop colours. In its detailed review, The Guardian Nigeria described his strongest tools as powerful octaves, falsetto, polyphonic harmonies and a Fuji-derived “Fujinova” approach. Those vocal choices—not family history alone—make him identifiable within Nigerian pop.
