MTN Nigeria has appointed Lwazi Bam as a non-executive director, with the appointment taking effect on 1 December 2026. The announcement adds a Nigerian board role to the responsibilities of an executive who joined MTN Group as chief risk officer earlier this year.
The company disclosed the change in a notification to the Nigerian Exchange dated 3 November. Bam is one of five directors named in the filing, which sets the same effective date for all five appointments.
What is Lwazi Bam's new MTN appointment?
Lwazi Bam has been appointed a non-executive director of MTN Nigeria, effective 1 December 2026. He already serves as MTN Group's chief risk officer. The Nigerian board appointment is a separate role and does not announce his appointment as MTN Nigeria's chief executive.
The role begins in December
The effective date is important: the November announcement does not mean Bam had already begun this particular board appointment when the news was released. The filing schedules it for the start of December.
It also distinguishes between two categories of director. Ibrahim Dikko and Boye Olusanya are named as independent non-executive directors. Bam, Professor Fabian Ajogwu and Imoni Akpofure are named as non-executive directors, without the independent designation.
Those descriptions should be preserved when reporting the appointments. Calling all five independent directors would change what the company disclosed.

How this differs from his MTN Group job
Bam's existing executive role was announced months earlier. In its 24 April announcement, MTN Group said he would become group chief risk officer from 1 June 2026 and join its executive committee.
That job covers enterprise-wide risk management and compliance across the group. The new appointment concerns the board of MTN Nigeria, the Nigerian operating company. The two announcements therefore refer to different positions within the wider business.
MTN linked the group appointment to its Ambition 2030 strategy and the opportunities associated with data adoption and financial inclusion across Africa. Group president and chief executive Ralph Mupita highlighted Bam's experience managing complex businesses across multiple markets and his understanding of risk, regulation and governance.
The November filing does not announce a replacement for Bam as group chief risk officer. Nor does it describe his Nigerian appointment as a move into day-to-day executive management of MTN Nigeria.
From Deloitte Africa to telecoms governance
Bam brings a long professional-services career to the appointment. According to MTN's executive profile, he led Deloitte Africa from June 2012 to May 2022 during a career with the firm spanning nearly three decades.
The profile credits him with overseeing the integration of Deloitte operations across 15 countries into a single African entity. He also served on Deloitte's global executive committee.

His qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce honours degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree, listed as B.Compt, from the University of South Africa. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and is a qualified South African chartered accountant.
MTN also records his previous leadership of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants in Southern Africa. These roles provide relevant background to the appointment without relying on unverified personal details or estimates of his wealth.
A wider refresh of the Nigerian board
Bam's appointment forms part of a broader group of additions rather than a standalone announcement. Premium Times' report on the changes describes experience among the other appointees spanning telecommunications, corporate governance, infrastructure and finance.
Dikko previously held regulatory and corporate-affairs responsibilities at Etisalat Nigeria.
Olusanya leads FMN Holdings and brings experience across several industries. Ajogwu is a corporate-governance professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, while Akpofure's background includes the International Finance Corporation and CDC Group, now British International Investment.

The combination gives the announcement a wider significance than Bam's career move alone. It brings several professional backgrounds into the same board intake. Whether that translates into better decisions or stronger performance will depend on the board's subsequent work; the appointment announcement itself does not demonstrate those outcomes.
What the appointment does and does not change
For readers following Bam, the immediate development is a clearly dated addition to his responsibilities. For readers following MTN Nigeria, it is a change in board composition scheduled for December.
The announcement does not set out a new customer tariff, network rollout, investment commitment or service launch. It should therefore be read as a governance development, rather than a promise of an immediate change to subscribers' experience.
The next useful details will be how the new directors are integrated into the board's work, including any committee assignments subsequently disclosed. For now, the confirmed points are the individuals named, the categories of appointment and the 1 December effective date.
