ABUJA, Nigeria — 4 September 2026: Defence Minister Christopher Musa has said Nigeria’s security agencies are still investigating former Bayelsa governor Timipre Sylva’s alleged involvement in a plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government. Musa’s televised remarks are a fresh official update, but they do not amount to a finding of guilt or a new conviction against Sylva.

What did Christopher Musa confirm about Timipre Sylva? Musa said on Channels Television that the alleged coup plot was real and that the DSS and NIA were still investigating Sylva’s alleged involvement. The minister did not announce a completed investigation or court judgment, and Sylva has previously denied involvement in the plot.

What the defence minister said

Musa spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday. A report carrying video from the interview said he described the coup attempt as real and said the Department of State Services and National Intelligence Agency were still examining Sylva’s alleged role. Naija News published the relevant segment at 8:24 PM WAT on 3 September.

The minister said investigators were taking time to establish details and that people not found to be involved should not be punished. The Guardian Nigeria’s morning account independently reported Musa’s statement that the DSS and NIA investigation was continuing and that suspects already before courts were no longer in military custody.

Musa did not present a completed intelligence report in the interview. He also did not announce that Sylva had been arrested, tried or convicted. The accurate update is that a senior government official publicly confirmed an ongoing investigation into alleged involvement.

The court case and Sylva’s status are separate

The broader coup case was already in court before Musa’s interview. In April, Associated Press reported that six defendants pleaded not guilty to treason and terrorism-related charges. The report said Sylva was named as another suspect who remained at large. Charges and prosecutorial allegations are not findings of guilt.

XTRAfrica previously reported that Nigeria planned to try some officers identified in the 2025 coup-plot investigation. The new interview adds official detail about the intelligence investigation and Sylva; it does not replace the courts as the forum where criminal accusations must be tested.

Sylva has denied involvement in the alleged plot. No response from him to Musa’s latest interview was located by the verification cutoff. Any later response should be added to the same page with its date and source.

Our previous article on Timipre Sylva’s APC resignation already separates his confirmed departure from the party from unresolved legal and security allegations. Musa’s statement is a meaningful update to that distinction because it gives a named official account of the investigation after Sylva’s resignation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission matter remains a separate track. BusinessDay reported on 1 September that the commission asked Sylva to make himself available for questioning over an alleged $14.86 million fraud case. The report said he had been declared wanted in that inquiry and recorded his denial of wrongdoing. The EFCC matter should not be merged with the alleged coup case as though they were one charge.

Sylva is a former Bayelsa governor and former minister of state for petroleum resources. His public record also includes national petroleum policy work, including the transition around the Petroleum Industry Act and debates about major assets such as Nigeria’s OPL 245 project. That background explains the attention around his political exit and legal exposure, but it does not prove any accusation.

What remains unresolved

The public still does not have the final DSS-NIA findings on Sylva, a newly announced individual arraignment arising from Musa’s remarks, or a judicial ruling on his alleged role. It is also unclear when investigators will issue their next formal update.
