EC invalidates parliamentary results in Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central Dec 14, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The Electoral Commission (EC) has said the parliamentary results for four areas are not valid The Electoral Commission (EC) has said the parliamentary results for four areas—Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central—are not valid. This happened because the voting did not follow the correct rules. The EC's Deputy Chairperson, Samuel Tettey, spoke about this on Friday, December 13, 2024. He explained that out of 12 areas needing a recount, only three—Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North—have been sorted out successfully. The recount for other places, like Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South, has not yet been done. He said, “It is important to note that the re-collation in the following constituencies, namely Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central, did not follow the laid-down processes as enshrined in CI 127, despite police presence at the collation centres to facilitate the re-collation.” Tettey also explained that in these four places, party members disrupted the process and forced EC workers to announce results for their candidates. This goes against the rules in CI 127. He added that EC workers were under pressure and could not follow the right steps. Because of this, the results in these four areas are illegal and cannot be accepted. - Museveni Warns Security Forces: No Torture During Elections
President Museveni condemns torture and excessive force during elections, urging security forces to maintain peace legally. Development, youth jobs also addressed. KAMPALA — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned security personnel against using excessive force during elections, saying torture and beatings are unnecessary and undermine efforts to maintain peace, according to ChimpReports Uganda . Speaking on Wednesday, Museveni said discipline and patience, rather than brutality, should guide the conduct of security agencies during electoral periods, amid recurring allegations from opposition groups that supporters are subjected to abuse. “Beating people shows a lack of patience. Torture during elections is not necessary, and I will engage the security forces on this,” Museveni said. He stressed that while maintaining law and order remains a national priority, security operations must stay within legal boundaries. “No one will be allowed to disturb Uganda’s peace. Those who attempt to cause disorder will be dealt with according to the law,” he added. Museveni’s remarks come against a backdrop of long-standing accusations by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, which has repeatedly alleged that police and military units use excessive force during election campaigns. The government has previously denied those claims. According to ChimpReports Uganda, the president also dismissed arguments that security agencies struggle to control unrest due to limited manpower, arguing instead that effective organisation is more important than numbers. “I have heard statements suggesting there are few soldiers and many rioters. Peace and order are maintained through organisation, not numbers alone,” he said. Turning to development issues, Museveni said the Greater Mubende sub-region had recorded progress but continued to face challenges linked to leadership decisions and prioritisation. He highlighted limited access to clean water in Kasanda district as a key concern. “Kasanda has only 34% access to safe water. That reflects leadership choices,” Museveni said, while noting improvements in infrastructure such as electricity, roads, telecommunications, schools, and health facilities in areas including Kyankwanzi. On public health, Museveni attributed population growth in parts of the region to improved child survival resulting from government immunisation programmes. ADVERTISEMENT “Mityana now has over 400,000 people. The population increased because children are surviving,” he said. The president also emphasised the need for disciplined management of public funds to accelerate development. “We prioritise and do things step by step. We do not scatter budgets,” Museveni said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to completing the Kakono–Manyi–Mubende–Sekanyonyi–Busujju road project. Addressing employment, Museveni reiterated that the state cannot serve as the primary employer in a country approaching 50 million people. “Government jobs are about 480,000. Real jobs come from wealth, factories, commercial agriculture, services, and ICT,” he said, adding that factories currently employ about 1.3 million Ugandans. On education, Museveni defended the policy of free primary education, blaming school dropouts on the reintroduction of school charges. Museveni also cautioned against inward-looking economic policies, criticising opposition leaders for failing to prioritise regional markets. “None of the opposition presidential candidates talk about the regional market. - Daddy Freeze Says Religion Has No Impact in Nigeria
Daddy Freeze says religion has no results in Nigeria, questioning its impact on development, prosperity, and living standards. Controversial media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze , has sparked fresh debate after questioning the impact of religion on Nigeria’s development. Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast , Freeze argued that despite Nigeria’s strong religious culture, there is little evidence of corresponding progress in areas such as prosperity, social welfare, and living standards. He stated that religion should be evaluated based on measurable outcomes rather than belief alone. “My problem with religion is it has no results. Where is the prosperity? Where is the love?” he said, pointing to what he described as a disconnect between widespread faith and national realities. Freeze compared Nigeria with Japan, noting that the Asian country, which he described as less religious, has achieved significant economic and social development. He also raised concerns about Nigeria’s life expectancy, stating that the country continues to face poor health outcomes despite its high level of religiosity. In addition, he criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, arguing that Nigerians contribute more financially to religious institutions than to civic responsibilities such as taxation. “We pay more tithes than taxes in this country, yet our prayers and sacrifices don’t seem to reflect on the condition of our nation,” he said. His comments are expected to reignite discussions around the relationship between religion, governance, and development in Nigeria, where faith remains a central part of daily life. U.S. Senators Urge Stronger Action on Rwanda-DRC Conflict A group of five U.S. senators, led by Sen. Tim Kaine, has called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to strengthen U.S. diplomacy in response to the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. In a letter dated June 25, the senators warned that fighting intensified after the Washington Accords, with Rwanda-backed M23 advances triggering civilian casualties, mass displacement, and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The lawmakers also pointed to recent U.S. sanctions and visa restrictions on Rwandan military officials, arguing they demonstrate that the current peace framework remains fragile. Among their key requests, the senators asked the State Department to explain: • How it is monitoring the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from eastern DRC. • What additional diplomatic and accountability measures are being taken. • How civilians and humanitarian operations are being protected. • How the U.S. plans to ensure conflict minerals and economic interests do not overshadow peace and security. The letter concludes that sustained diplomatic pressure, not symbolic agreements, is needed to help end the violence in eastern Congo. Read Full letter Here

- Ernest Bai Koroma Biography: Presidency, Family and Return Home
Ernest Bai Koroma’s biography, age, education, presidency, family, legacy and 2026 return to Sierra Leone after his treason case ended. Ernest Bai Koroma is a Sierra Leonean politician, former insurance executive and two-term president whose career spans opposition politics, reconstruction and regional diplomacy. He led Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, then became an election observer and democracy advocate. On 6 September 2026, Koroma returned to Freetown after more than two years in Nigeria. His homecoming followed Sierra Leone’s July decision to discontinue the treason proceedings brought against him over the deadly attacks of November 2023. The return placed an influential former leader back at the centre of a national conversation about justice and reconciliation. Who is Ernest Bai Koroma? Ernest Bai Koroma is Sierra Leone’s former president, an ex-insurance executive and a senior figure in the All People’s Congress. He governed from 2007 to 2018, oversaw major post-war rebuilding and the Ebola crisis, and returned home in September 2026 after the treason case against him was discontinued. Koroma’s return to Freetown in September 2026 Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Koroma’s return and said Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu accompanied him to Freetown on President Bola Tinubu’s instruction. Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo also travelled with the delegation. The ministry described the journey as the conclusion of a regional confidence-building process involving Nigeria, ECOWAS and Sierra Leonean stakeholders. Koroma had left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 after a court allowed him to seek medical treatment. Weeks earlier, prosecutors had charged him with treason, misprision of treason and related offences over the 26 November 2023 attacks on military facilities, police stations and prisons in Freetown. Koroma denied the accusations and entered no guilty plea. The original charges were reported by the Associated Press , which also documented the deaths of security personnel and the escape of prisoners during the violence. In July 2026, the Attorney-General filed a notice discontinuing the proceedings. The case was removed from the court docket and Koroma’s bail conditions ended, according to a detailed account of the notice and its legal effect . The government did not publicly state why it ended the case. A discontinuance closes the proceedings; it does not turn the untested accusations into established fact. Koroma’s return was independently reported by BusinessDay . The former president’s homecoming is politically important because Sierra Leone is preparing for elections in 2028. It also brings into focus the essential distinction between accusation and conviction. From Makeni and insurance to national opposition leader Koroma was born on 2 October 1953 in Makeni, in Sierra Leone’s Northern Province. He was 72 years old on 7 September 2026. The Munzinger biographical archive records that he studied economics at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, graduating in 1976. His first career was outside elected politics. After briefly teaching, he entered the insurance industry in 1978 and eventually became managing director of Reliance Insurance Trust Corporation. The Columbia Encyclopedia profile places his insurance career between 1978 and 2001, before he moved into full-time politics. ADVERTISEMENT Koroma became leader of the All People’s Congress in 2002. He contested that year’s presidential election, finished second, won a seat in Parliament and became opposition leader. From 2002 to 2007, he served as minority leader and worked on parliamentary oversight committees, according to the African conflict-management organisation ACCORD . Those five years established him as the main national challenger to the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party. Two election victories and a post-war rebuilding agenda Koroma won the 2007 presidential run-off against Solomon Berewa and was re-elected in 2012. His administration came to power only five years after the formal end of Sierra Leone’s civil war, when damaged roads, electricity networks, water systems and public institutions still limited daily life and economic recovery. His Agenda for Change prioritised energy, transport, agriculture and public services, followed by the Agenda for Prosperity. In 2017, the African Development Bank documented a government-backed expansion of the Bo–Kenema electricity system intended to improve service for more than 54,000 households. Koroma also strengthened the Anti-Corruption Commission’s power to investigate and prosecute cases independently of the attorney-general. A 2009 Human Rights Watch assessment recognised meaningful early anti-corruption steps, including stronger legislation and Koroma’s asset declaration, while warning that resistance inside government and serious weaknesses in policing and the courts threatened reform. The record was mixed. Supporters point to roads, energy projects, political stability and periods of rapid growth. Critics question public-finance management, institutional durability and contested political decisions. Sierra Leone rebuilt important infrastructure and consolidated post-war peace, but poverty, unemployment and institutional weakness remained deep. Ebola, economic shock and the 2017 mudslide Koroma’s second term was dominated by crises beyond ordinary electoral politics. The 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic killed thousands across West Africa, placed Sierra Leone’s health system under extreme pressure and disrupted trade, education and public life. In a statement preserved by the United Nations General Assembly , his government said the epidemic exposed fundamental weaknesses in the country’s health system and reversed years of economic growth. Recovery had barely gained momentum when heavy rainfall triggered flooding and the collapse of part of Sugar Loaf Mountain near Freetown in August 2017. Hundreds died, many more were displaced and the disaster exposed the risks created by vulnerable settlements, poor land management and climate pressure. These emergencies shaped Koroma’s reputation. His administration expanded laboratories and planned post-Ebola programmes, but the crisis showed that headline growth had not produced a resilient health system. Africa’s continuing experience with Ebola including recent outbreak reporting from the Democratic Republic of Congo keeps Sierra Leone’s lessons relevant. ADVERTISEMENT Leaving office and becoming a regional elder Koroma completed the constitutionally permitted two terms. Ahead of the 2018 elections, he told an ECOWAS observation mission that his government expected a peaceful transfer of power. When Julius Maada Bio and the Sierra Leone People’s Party won, Koroma left office and the opposition took control. After the presidency, he led or joined election-observation work across Africa. The African Union named him head of the joint AU–COMESA mission for Kenya’s 2022 election . He also led ECOWAS observers during Nigeria’s 2023 election and participated in democracy, peace and security forums. In a 2023 address published by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies , Koroma argued for citizen-centred security institutions and professional armed forces. His regional role resembles that of other former presidents asked to support African election monitoring, such as Goodluck Jonathan’s 2026 observer mission in Uganda . It also places him within a wider West African debate about constitutional government highlighted by Guinea’s 2026 presidential transition . Ernest Bai Koroma’s wife, family and private life During Koroma’s presidency, Alice Sia Nyama Koroma served as First Lady. UNAIDS documented her public-health work , including the Women’s Initiative for Safer Health and campaigns aimed at improving maternal and child health. Reliable sources differ on the number of Koroma’s children, so this biography does not publish an uncertain figure or identify private family members. His 2026 return to Sierra Leone may shape his public role, but no new official position had been announced by 7 September 2026. Koroma’s biography now enters another chapter. - Jonathan Leads AU‑COMESA‑IGAD Mission to Observe Uganda Elections
Former Nigerian leader Goodluck Jonathan leads a joint African observer mission to monitor Uganda’s Jan. 15, 2026 polls, with 84 experts from across the continent. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan arrived in Kampala this week to lead a joint election observation mission organised by the African Union (AU), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Inter‑Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) ahead of Uganda’s general elections on 15 January 2026, according to a report by P.M. News Nigeria . An official statement from the regional blocs said the mission was invited by Uganda’s government and the Electoral Commission of Uganda to monitor voting across the country. The multi‑organisation mission is composed of 84 short‑term observers drawn from ambassadors accredited to the AU, election management officials, civil society representatives, human‑rights specialists, and gender and media experts. Jonathan is supported by Ambassador Shemsudin Ahmed Roble, a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders, and Commander Abebe Muluneh Beyene from IGAD. Observers have been sourced from 27 African countries including Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe ensuring a broad regional representation. According to the mission’s arrival statement, teams will be deployed to polling stations nationwide to monitor the opening of polls, voting, closing procedures and vote counting . The observers will assess the polls based on Uganda’s electoral laws as well as continental and international frameworks such as the OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and the International Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. The mission said its engagement will extend beyond polling stations to interactions with state authorities, political parties, media, civil society organisations and other observer teams. The AU‑COMESA‑IGAD mission plans to issue a preliminary statement on 17 January 2026 in Kampala and follow up with a comprehensive report within a month of the final results. Officials underscored that the joint mission aims to promote transparency and adherence to democratic norms, echoing similar statements from regional bodies. Uganda’s general elections will determine the president, members of parliament and local government leaders. The country has registered about 21 million voters, and the presidential race features eight candidates, including incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has led the nation since 1986, and opposition figures such as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (popularly known as Bobi Wine), Nathan Nandala Mafabi, Gregory Mugisha Muntu, Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, Frank Bulira Kabinga, Robert Kasibante and Joseph Mabirizi. ADVERTISEMENT Jonathan is supported by Ambassador Shemsudin Ahmed Roble, a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders, and Commander Abebe Muluneh Beyene from IGAD. At UNGA80, Macron called for respect of Congo’s sovereignty, urged hope for the displaced in Kivu, and announced a Paris summit on the DRC crisis. New York, Sept. 23, 2025 – French President Emmanuel Macron used his address at the United Nations General Assembly to call for the protection of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s sovereignty and the restoration of hope to people suffering in the country’s conflict-ridden east. “In the Great Lakes region, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo must be respected,” Macron said. “We must restore hope to the people of Kivu and to the hundreds of thousands who have been displaced.” The French leader announced that Paris will host a meeting next month to bring together key partners able to respond to the humanitarian emergency in eastern Congo and coordinate peace efforts. - Kipkorir Silver, Kenya Team Gold in Copenhagen
Nicholas Kipkorir won world half-marathon silver, Joshua Cheptegei took bronze and Kenya secured the men’s team title in Copenhagen. COPENHAGEN, Denmark — 20 September 2026: Kenya won the men’s team title at the World Athletics Road Running Championships after Nicholas Kipkorir claimed individual silver in 58:11. Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei finished third in a personal best of 58:26, while Sweden’s Andreas Almgren took the individual gold in a European record of 58:06. Who won the men’s half marathon in Copenhagen? Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the individual world title in 58:06. Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir took silver five seconds later, Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei earned bronze in 58:26, and Kenya won the separate team competition with a combined time of 2:56:30. Kipkorir misses gold by five seconds Kipkorir stayed with Almgren through the decisive stages of the 21.1km race and briefly edged ahead during the final run towards Parken Stadium. Almgren then produced the stronger finishing surge, crossing in 58:06 and lowering his own European record by 35 seconds. The official World Athletics race report records Kipkorir at 58:11, five seconds behind the winner. The Kenyan entered the race with a 58:08 personal best set in Lisbon in March and had been one of the strongest contenders in the field. Kipkorir’s silver was an individual medal, while Kenya’s gold came in the separately scored team competition. That distinction matters because headlines describing Kenya as the world champion without identifying the team event could wrongly imply that a Kenyan won the individual race. Cheptegei earns his first global road medal Cheptegei stayed with the leading group through 15km and was still among the three front-runners at 20km. Almgren and Kipkorir moved clear late, but the Ugandan held third place and finished 23 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku. His 58:26 was a substantial improvement on the 59:21 he ran when finishing fourth at the 2020 World Half Marathon Championships. World Athletics described the bronze as Cheptegei’s first global road medal, adding a new category to a record that already includes Olympic and world track titles and the 2019 world cross-country crown. Fresh Ugandan coverage focused on the new personal best and podium, including UG Diplomat’s result report . The official account also said Cheptegei had received treatment for left-foot pain after an injury 10 days before the race. That information came from the athlete’s post-race comments; no broader diagnosis was announced. ADVERTISEMENT Cheptegei said the Copenhagen race formed part of his preparation for a marathon in the coming weeks. His next start and fitness will therefore be the next verifiable developments rather than any assumption about how the foot issue may affect him. Kenya’s depth delivers the team title Kenya placed four runners in the top nine. Gideon Rono finished fifth in 58:57, Alex Nzioka Matata was eighth in 59:22 and Daniel Ebenyo placed ninth in 59:42. Kipkorir, Rono and Matata supplied Kenya’s three scoring times. According to the official men’s results , Kenya’s combined 2:56:30 secured team gold ahead of Ethiopia’s 2:59:47 and the United States’ 3:01:34. Kenyan reports, including Pulse Sports Kenya , highlighted the four top-10 finishes as the basis of that result. The race was fast from the start. The lead group passed 5km in 13:57 and 10km in 27:53. Kipkorir, Almgren, Worku and Cheptegei then separated from the rest before Worku dropped from the medal positions. The World Athletics preview had identified Kipkorir, Ebenyo, Almgren and Cheptegei among the principal contenders. Trending Now Uganda HIV Self-Test Assembly: Prices, Jobs and Exports . Eritrea’s Dawit Seare won the men’s 5km, while Kenyan athletes also collected major medals across the programme. The half marathon, however, produced the clearest regional spread: Kenya supplied the silver medallist and team champions, while Uganda gained an individual bronze. A global hunger monitor has warned of a realistic chance of famine in 14 areas across Sudan if the ongoing conflict between military factions intensifies. The affected regions include parts of the capital Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, and El Gezira State, according to an update from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). As per the latest IPC assessment, approximately 755,000 people in Sudan are facing "catastrophe," the most severe level of extreme hunger. Overall, 8.5 million people, representing 18% of the population, are experiencing food shortages that could lead to acute malnutrition and death or necessitate emergency coping strategies. The conflict between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April last year, has spread throughout the country, triggering ethnically driven violence in Darfur and causing the world's largest internal displacement crisis. The IPC's warning suggests that famine could occur with reasonable probability under a worst-case scenario in the 14 identified areas. The IPC's criteria for declaring a famine include extreme food shortages affecting at least 20% of the population, acute malnutrition in at least 30% of children, and a daily death rate of two people per 10,000 due to starvation, malnutrition, or disease.
