  • Rwandan DJ Toxxyk Arrested After Fatal Collision With Police Officer

Rwandan police have arrested DJ Toxxyk following a road accident that killed an on-duty police officer in Kigali. Rwandan police have confirmed the arrest of local disc jockey DJ Toxxyk following a road accident that resulted in the death of a police officer who was on duty. According to the Rwanda National Police, the incident occurred in the early hours of December 20, 2025, when the DJ’s vehicle struck an officer stationed along a road in Kigali. After the collision, the driver left the scene but was later tracked down and apprehended in Karongi District. Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga said the suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon after initially evading authorities. He is currently being held at Remera Police Station as investigations continue. Preliminary information from witnesses indicates that the vehicle was traveling at high speed while descending from the Kiyovu area along the Payage road. The officer was reportedly standing on the opposite side of the roadway when the car crossed lanes and struck him. The impact dragged the officer for approximately 30 meters, according to accounts shared with investigators. Authorities noted that the crash may have occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle, possibly while attempting to avoid road barriers linked to ongoing construction works in the area. Police have also stated that tests are underway to determine whether alcohol consumption may have been a factor in the incident. Further details will be communicated once investigations are completed. • Seven Ethiopian Armed Groups Form Anti-Government Alliance

Seven Ethiopian armed groups, including TPLF and Fano forces, have announced an alliance aimed at removing Abiy Ahmed's government. ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Seven Ethiopian armed groups, including forces that fought on opposing sides of the 2020–2022 Tigray war, have announced an alliance whose stated aim is to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's federal government and establish a transition. The coalition brings together the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the Amhara Fano National Movement and armed organisations from Oromia, Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz and the Somali region. Its announcement is politically significant, but it does not show that the groups have created a unified military command or resolved their territorial and ideological disputes. Seven groups have announced the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, saying they will work to remove the federal government and support a transition. The coalition includes former enemies such as the TPLF and Fano. What the seven groups announced Reuters reported that the coalition is called the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival. A statement read by Fano leader Zemene Kassie and broadcast on Tigrayan television described removing the current government as the alliance's central objective. TPLF vice-president Amanuel Assefa separately told Africanews that the groups had been discussing cooperation for more than a year. He said the planned political outcome was a transitional government. The announcement includes groups based across several regions, giving the coalition a wider geographic claim than a single regional insurgency. Reuters identified the TPLF and Amhara Fano National Movement among the members, alongside organisations from Oromia, Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz and the Somali region. Why the TPLF-Fano link is striking Fano forces fought alongside the federal government against the TPLF during the Tigray war. Since 2023, Fano factions have themselves fought federal forces in Amhara. The TPLF and Amhara nationalists also retain disputes over western Tigray, making their cooperation strategically important but internally fragile. Al Jazeera reported that coalition figures said the members would postpone their disputes and address them through dialogue later. That promise has not yet been tested through joint political structures or military operations. Al Jazeera reported that coalition figures said the members would postpone their disputes and address them through dialogue later. That promise has not yet been tested through joint political structures or military operations. ADVERTISEMENT The new grouping arrives as Ethiopia faces several overlapping conflicts. Federal forces have fought the Oromo Liberation Army since 2018, while violence in Amhara and renewed tensions involving Tigrayan forces have put further pressure on the state. XTRAfrica previously reported on renewed clashes in western Tigray , where unresolved territorial questions continue to threaten the settlement that ended the northern war. What the announcement does not prove The coalition's declared goal is not evidence that it can overthrow the federal government. Ethiopia's military retains significant manpower, air power and drones, while the armed groups differ in territory, leadership and political purpose. Reuters said the prime minister's spokesperson and federal government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A government adviser had said in August, when reports of a possible coalition circulated, that such a formation might cause disruption but could not remove the government. Why the regional stakes are high Ethiopia is central to the Horn of Africa and hosts the African Union headquarters. A coordinated conflict across several regions could disrupt trade routes, aid operations and civilian movement well beyond the immediate battlefields. XTRAfrica's explainer on Ethiopia's push for access to the Red Sea documented the strain involving Eritrea and the strategic importance of the Assab question. The 2022 Pretoria agreement ended large-scale fighting between the federal government and Tigrayan forces, but its implementation has remained contested. Reuters reported that the TPLF reasserted control over Tigray's political administration in May 2026 after accusing Addis Ababa of failing to honour the deal. Federal authorities said that move violated the agreement. The African Union and regional governments will now be watching for three things: whether the alliance establishes a functioning joint command, whether fighting expands across multiple fronts, and whether political channels remain open. For civilians, the most important distinction is between an announcement and an active nationwide campaign. The declaration raises the risk of escalation; it does not by itself establish that a new national war has begun. • In a significant intervention in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), United Nations peacekeepers have successfully facilitated the release of five civilians who had been abducted by an armed group. This rescue underscores the vital role of the UN's peacekeeping forces in addressing security challenges in conflict-prone areas. On a recent mission near Djugu in the Ituri province, peacekeepers from the UN mission known as MONUSCO acted swiftly to rescue the abducted individuals, including a woman and two minors. The operation highlighted the ongoing security issues in the region, where armed groups frequently disrupt civilian life. Following their release, the rescued civilians received immediate shelter and medical care provided by MONUSCO. The peacekeeping team then safely transported them back to their homes, ensuring their reintegration with family and community. Alongside the rescue, MONUSCO's presence in Ituri extends to other critical areas. In response to an attack by the Codeco armed group at a local mining site northeast of Bunia, which tragically resulted in four civilian deaths, peacekeepers have been deployed to safeguard vulnerable communities and monitor ongoing threats. The situation remains tense in the neighboring North Kivu province, where conflicts between the M23 armed group and Congolese armed forces have intensified. MONUSCO has established a presence in strategic areas, including near the town of Sake, to support the Congolese army in stabilizing the situation. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is currently visiting the DRC at the government's invitation. His itinerary includes meetings with internally displaced persons, human rights defenders, and senior officials, including President Felix Tshisekedi, to discuss human rights issues and strengthen collaborations. The ongoing efforts of UN peacekeepers in the DRC are crucial in mitigating the impact of armed conflicts and aiding affected civilians. The international community continues to watch closely as MONUSCO and other entities strive to bring lasting peace and security to the region. • Tshisekedi’s Historic Visit to Kazakhstan Strengthens Ties

President Tshisekedi’s state visit to Kazakhstan opens a new chapter for Congo, boosting trade, mining, and diplomatic ties with Central Asia. Astana, Sept. 10, 2025 – Relations between Central Asia and Africa entered a new era as President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) made his first state visit to Kazakhstan. The trip marked a turning point in bilateral ties, with both nations reaffirming their shared vision for sovereignty, peace, and global cooperation. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev welcomed his Congolese counterpart with full honors, calling the visit “a new chapter” in the partnership between the two regions. He emphasized that Kazakhstan sees significant potential in collaborating with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country of over 110 million people and home to some of the world’s most critical mineral reserves. “Kazakhstan is interested in deepening cooperation with the DRC in various areas. We are united by political will, economic potential, and common goals in culture and peace,” President Tokayev said. The talks focused on trade, mining, agriculture, IT, and digitalization. Tokayev praised the DRC’s role in global supply chains, noting its 76% share of world cobalt production and strong copper reserves — key for high-tech industries. He also highlighted the success of Kazakhstan’s Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), which operates in the Congolese mining sector with the support of the government. President Tshisekedi, in return, expressed gratitude for Kazakhstan’s solidarity during Congo’s hardest moments and praised its leadership in peace and nuclear disarmament. “DRC will never forget Kazakhstan’s support at the UN. Your decision to renounce nuclear weapons inspires us,” Tshisekedi said. The visit concluded with a joint statement, new intergovernmental agreements on mining and diplomacy, and a symbolic gesture — Tokayev awarding Tshisekedi the Order of Dostyk (Friendship) for his role in strengthening ties and promoting global stability. This state visit sets the stage for a future-oriented partnership between Congo and Kazakhstan, reinforcing Congo’s role not only in Africa but also in global diplomacy.
