  • DRC-Czech Defense Partnership Moves Toward Implementation

DRC and Czech officials discussed defense cooperation focused on pilot training, Air Force support and FARDC modernization. The Democratic Republic of Congo and the Czech Republic are moving toward implementation of a new defense cooperation framework after Czech Ambassador Petr Selepa met Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita in Kinshasa, according to Radio Okapi . The discussions focused on practical areas of cooperation, including the training of Congolese pilots, support for military personnel and possible equipment assistance for the Congolese Air Force. The meeting follows earlier talks held during Kabombo’s visit to Prague, where the two sides reviewed ways to revive military cooperation. The partnership fits into a wider push by Kinshasa to strengthen FARDC capacity through international defense partnerships. In recent months, the DRC has also explored or expanded military cooperation with other partners, including Belgium and Russia-linked discussions reported in previous regional coverage . Kabombo said the cooperation would support the training pillar of the FARDC’s reform efforts, while the Czech side welcomed the progress made since the Prague discussions. Separate reporting from 2025 also noted Kabombo’s participation in a defense and security technology forum in Brno, where DRC-Czech defense cooperation was discussed further by regional outlets . The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, was carried out by the CODECO (Cooperative for the Development of the Congo) militia, primarily composed of fighters from the Lendu ethnic group. Local officials, including Djugu administrator Ruphin Mapela, confirmed the fatalities . The Red Cross representative for Djugu, Dhekana Ernest, reported that the victims were shot and their bodies transported to Bunia. The regional army spokesperson added that a Congolese national and six militia fighters were also killed. In response, China condemned the attack and called for the DRC to pursue and punish the perpetrators swiftly. The Chinese foreign ministry highlighted the need for increased security measures for Chinese citizens and enterprises in the area and urged those in high-risk areas to evacuate. • Air Congo sets course for wider African network growth

Air Congo has launched flights to Johannesburg and Entebbe, marking a new step in its regional expansion strategy. Air Congo launched its first sub-regional routes on Sunday, opening new services from Kinshasa to Johannesburg and Entebbe in a move that marks a new phase in the carrier’s regional expansion, according to initial report by Beto.cd . The new connections strengthen the Democratic Republic of Congo’s air links with two important regional gateways in East and Southern Africa. They also align with Air Congo’s broader rollout of international services, which ACP reported would begin with Johannesburg and Entebbe on March 22 before extending to other African cities later in March and April. Air Congo was created as a joint venture between the Congolese state and Ethiopian Airlines, with the DRC holding 51% and Ethiopian Airlines 49%. The partnership was presented as part of a wider plan to improve connectivity, support trade and tourism, and build aviation capacity in Central Africa. The airline, which started operations in December 2024, initially focused on domestic services using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Its move into sub-regional routes now signals a broader ambition to expand its footprint in Africa’s increasingly competitive aviation market, with another report that more destinations are being added as part of the company’s next growth phase.
