Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, has shocked many Nigerians by revealing that he does not own a house outside the country. Dangote stated that he has two homes, one in his hometown of Kano and another in Lagos, and opts to stay in a rented apartment whenever he visits Abuja, the capital. Despite Nigeria's economic challenges, Dangote has maintained his position as Africa's richest man for the 13th consecutive year, according to Forbes. His net worth rose by $400 million over the last year, reaching $13.9 billion. The 66-year-old business tycoon made his fortune in the cement and sugar industries and recently launched an oil refinery in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub. Dangote made this revelation while speaking to journalists at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery , catching many by surprise in a country where the affluent elite are known for their extravagant lifestyles. It's common for wealthy Nigerians to own properties in cities like London, Dubai, and Atlanta. His comments have sparked significant reactions on social media, with some praising his decision as a wise financial move, noting that renting can be more cost-effective than owning property abroad. Dangote explained his choice as driven by a desire to contribute to Nigeria's industrialization. "The reason I don’t have a London or America house is solely because I wanted to focus on industrialization in Nigeria. I am very passionate about the Nigeria dream and apart from my Lagos house, I have another one in my home state, Kano, and a rented one in Abuja. If I have houses all over, in America and co, I would not be able to concentrate and build something for my people." While Dangote owns an opulent residence in Lagos’ Banana Island, where many high-profile Nigerians have mansions, his home in Kano is modest. It was notably used to host guests following the death of his brother, Sani Dangote, in 2021. Public affairs analyst Sani Bala commended Dangote's stance, suggesting that Nigerians need to shift their perception of wealth. "Nigerians need to be re-oriented to understand owning several mansions is not an achievement when the money would be needed elsewhere. Dangote said he sold his house in London in 1996, and I am sure the money realized from the sale was put back in his business - that is the way to go." Dangote's approach to wealth and property ownership sets a distinct example in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of reinvesting in local industries over personal luxury abroad. The UK denies Julius Malema entry over pro-Palestine and anti-colonial stance. EFF responds with bold Pan-African message. South Africa’s revolutionary leader, Julius Malema, has once again been denied entry into the UK - and this time, it’s not about paperwork. According to the UK Home Office, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader was labeled “non-conducive to the public good” and “undesirable” following his vocal support for Hamas and his unapologetic calls for land justice in South Africa. The UK cited speeches where Malema said his party would support arming the Palestinian group Hamas, and also pointed to past statements seen as inflammatory toward the white minority in South Africa. We will not trade our revolutionary beliefs in exchange for a visa," declared the EFF in a fiery response, accusing the UK of cowardice and of distorting Malema’s views on Black frustration, inequality, and the colonial legacy that still haunts South Africa. The EFF also stated plainly: The UK and all its allies can keep their visas. We will keep our Africa, and our commitment to support the oppressed of the world, especially the Palestinian people." This is the second time in two months that Malema has been denied entry to Britain. The first time, officials claimed the application was late. But this time, the UK made it clear: this was a “substantive decision” with no right to appeal. Malema, a fierce critic of Western imperialism, has long pushed for the nationalization of white-owned land, unapologetically confronting the injustices left by apartheid and colonialism. His message resonates with millions of Black South Africans who remain locked out of the economy nearly 30 years after freedom was declared. Despite this, UK authorities used a controversial clip of Malema singing protest songs, including “Shoot to Kill” and “Kill the Boer,” as a reason to block him. That same video was recently played by Donald Trump during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Yet South Africa’s own Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the lyrics do not amount to hate speech, stating that they are “a provocative way of advancing a political agenda,” not a call to violence. Real Target: Anti-Colonial Voices Critics of Malema’s ban say the UK’s move is clearly political, aimed at silencing voices that challenge white privilege, support Palestine, or dare to confront the empire. With South Africa’s unemployment at 33%, and the Black majority still economically excluded, the EFF argues that calls for radical transformation are not only justified, they are necessary. His exclusion from the UK is unlikely to silence him. If anything, it strengthens the call for Africans to look inward, reject external judgment, and fight for economic and cultural freedom. If standing with the oppressed makes us undesirable to the West, so be it,” an EFF spokesperson told supporters. “We’re building a future rooted in African dignity, not foreign approval. Harare, Zimbabwe - In a bold move to combat economic instability and soaring inflation, Zimbabwe has launched a gold-backed currency named ZiG, short for "Zimbabwe Gold". This initiative marks the nation's latest effort to anchor its economy, which has been plagued by financial crises over the last quarter-century. Central Bank Governor John Mushayavanhu announced the immediate rollout of the ZiG, aiming to replace the rapidly depreciating RTGS with a more stable and market-responsive currency. The introduction of ZiG, available in denominations ranging from 1 to 200, is accompanied by the issuance of coins to address the small change conundrum, historically solved with non-cash items like sweets and pens. Despite the introduction of ZiG, the US dollar will continue to dominate, being the preferred legal tender for 85% of transactions. The public's reception to the new currency remains cautious, reflecting a deep-seated mistrust rooted in past financial mismanagement. The central bank pledges to uphold the ZiG's value by ensuring its backing with tangible assets such as gold and foreign exchange reserves. This commitment aims to restore confidence and prevent the pitfalls of previous currencies, notably the infamous Z$10tn notes of 2008 and the subsequent collapse of the bond note. Economists and citizens alike watch closely, hopeful yet skeptical, as Zimbabwe embarks on this latest economic experiment, emphasizing the need for governmental discipline and transparency to regain public trust and achieve lasting stability.
