  • Human Rights Watch exposes Rwanda-backed M23 group for war crimes in DR Congo, including forced deportations and ethnic targeting. A new Human Rights Watch report has exposed a troubling pattern of forced transfers and possible war crimes by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group in eastern DR Congo. Over 1,500 people, including Congolese citizens and Rwandan refugees, were unlawfully deported to Rwanda, raising questions about Rwanda’s real role in the region. Kigali’s Hidden Hand Behind M23’s Brutal Operations The report, based on interviews and verified testimonies, confirms what Congolese communities and observers have long suspected: Rwanda, far from being a passive neighbor, is actively controlling M23 operations on Congolese soil. Backed by logistical and military support from Kigali, M23 captured Goma and Bukavu in early 2025. The result? Massive displacement, destruction of ID documents, and forced deportations under the guise of “repatriation.” “Rwanda’s control over the M23 in eastern Congo makes it ultimately responsible for the armed group’s numerous abuses.”, Clémentine de Montjoye, Human Rights Watch Legal experts now say Rwanda may meet the legal definition of a foreign occupying force in eastern Congo. Under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, the forcible transfer or deportation of civilians from occupied territory is strictly prohibited, regardless of motive. M23 forcibly dismantled the displacement camps around Goma. People were rounded up and pushed into the Lake Kivu Christian Center in Goma. Many were deported to Rwanda against their will. Rwandan forces, according to military insiders, have directed M23 operations, equipped fighters with GPS-guided mortars and drones, and have even led press tours into occupied Congolese territory, further cementing claims of foreign occupation. Rwandan forces, according to military insiders, have directed M23 operations, equipped fighters with GPS-guided mortars and drones, and have even led press tours into occupied Congolese territory, further cementing claims of foreign occupation. ADVERTISEMENT Deportations Dressed as “Repatriation” UNHCR protocols require refugee returns to be voluntary, safe, and dignified. But the testimonies reveal a darker truth: people were sent to Rwanda with no choice. Their Congolese voter cards were burned by M23. Others agreed to leave only out of fear of reprisal. “UNHCR does what they want with us. We don’t have a choice.” , Congolese woman at the transit center Meanwhile, Rwanda’s foreign minister publicly justified the deportations by claiming the returnees were “held hostage” by the FDLR, a claim Congo’s Interior Ministry quickly denied. Targeting Civilians Based on Ethnicity and Origin The report reveals disturbing ethnic profiling: people perceived to be of Rwandan origin, regardless of their Congolese documentation, were targeted and labeled as “Rwandan subjects.” M23 soldiers destroyed Congolese ID cards and forcibly categorized people without due process. • As the Rwandan elections approach, over 10,000 Rwandese nationals residing in Uganda have registered to vote, according to Joseph Rutabana, the Rwanda High Commissioner to Uganda. Rutabana shared this news while addressing journalists at the Rwanda High Commission on Friday. To be eligible to vote, individuals must be Rwandan citizens registered by the National Electoral Commission. While Rwanda will hold its elections on Monday, Rwandans living in Uganda are scheduled to vote a day earlier, on Sunday. The presidential race features incumbent President Paul Kagame of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), opposition candidate Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party (DGP), and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana. Frank Habineza, 47, noted significant improvements in the campaign atmosphere compared to 2017. "People were not used to us. They thought we were enemies of the country. The reception was very bad; we were sent to campaign in graveyards, had stones thrown at us, and were beaten in some places,” he said. • Analyst says China led naval drills reveal SA navy’s limited readiness

China-led BRICS Plus exercise highlights ageing fleet and missing maritime patrol aircraft A leading South African defence analyst says a China‑led naval exercise planned for this month exposes the modest state of the country’s naval capability. Helmoed Römer Heitman, speaking to broadcaster 702 Drive, said the Will for Peace 2026 drills involving China, Russia and Iran will largely consist of simple manoeuvres and communications rather than high‑level combat training. His comments come as South Africa prepares to host the BRICS‑Plus maritime exercise off its coast from 9 to 16 January 2026, highlighting both the country’s diplomatic balancing act and its ageing fleet. Details of the exercise The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) formally announced on 30 December 2025 that it will host Will for Peace 2026 in local waters. The event previously known as Exercise Mosi is led by the People’s Republic of China and includes Russia and Iran. According to the Department of Defence, the exercise will focus on joint maritime safety operations, interoperability drills and protection of sea‑borne trade routes . Officials said the theme, “Joint Actions to Ensure the Safety of Shipping and Maritime Economic Activities,” was chosen to signal the peaceful intent of the drills. The SANDF emphasised that further details would be released later. Analyst’s assessment of readiness Heitman welcomed South Africa’s participation but stressed that the navy can only manage basic naval operations. In an interview on 702 Drive (first reported by Eyewitness News), he said the forthcoming exercise will effectively be a “passage exercise” a low‑intensity drill focused on communications and simple manoeuvres rather than complex war‑fighting. He argued that this reflects South Africa’s limited naval capacity. The analyst’s concerns stem from the state of the SA Navy’s fleet. DefenceWeb reports that three of the navy’s four Valour‑class frigates and two of its three submarines are overdue for mid‑life refits because of sustained underfunding . SAS Amatola underwent only a partial refit in 2015, while the SAS Isandlwana and SAS Spioenkop have not been funded for the necessary upgrades. SAS Mendi is the only frigate still considered seaworthy, yet its refit is also unfunded. Without refurbishments, officials warn that frigate capability could disappear in the medium term. Heitman applauded the Amatola’s recent achievements the ship sailed 22,000 nautical miles over 134 days during the 2024/25 financial year but cautioned that upgrades are essential. Heitman applauded the Amatola’s recent achievements the ship sailed 22,000 nautical miles over 134 days during the 2024/25 financial year but cautioned that upgrades are essential. ADVERTISEMENT He told DefenceWeb that he would not send any of South Africa’s frigates into combat with “existing sensors and close‑to‑timex missiles” and noted that the navy has a spiral‑upgrade plan that remains unfunded . The analyst argued that the first priority is to get vessels seaworthy so crews can build cohesion, after which modernisation must follow. Additional capability gaps The SA Navy’s challenges are compounded by limited maritime air surveillance. In late 2025 the Air Force withdrew its ageing C‑47‑TP maritime patrol aircraft due to maintenance problems and lack of spares. A parliamentary reply to opposition MP Chris Hattingh revealed that planned replacement projects (Saucepan, Metsi and Pelican) have stalled because funding is unavailable. Defence Web notes that the withdrawal of these aircraft leaves the air force “stranded” in terms of maritime patrols. Without maritime patrol aircraft, the navy’s ability to detect threats and coordinate operations over South Africa’s extensive coastline is further weakened as it was reported by Eye Witness News . Political concerns and reactions The choice of partners has drawn criticism at home. Will for Peace 2026 is being led by China and includes Russia and Iran two countries under Western sanctions. Democratic Alliance MP Chris Hattingh argues that hosting sanctioned states undermines South Africa’s stated policy of non‑alignment and could strain relations with democratic trading partners. He noted that the drill appears to be a continuation of Exercise Mosi III under a different name and warned that the government has not briefed Parliament on the costs and legal status of the exercise . Analysts say such engagements help the navy maintain basic operational skills and international relationships. However, years of budget cuts and deferred maintenance have eroded its ability to project force. In January 2026, the Department of Defence acknowledged that continued refit delays will cause frigate and submarine capability to disappear in the coming financial years if funding is not found. The withdrawal of maritime patrol aircraft similarly underscores the broader decline in South African maritime capability . Will for Peace 2026 therefore highlights both the strategic ambition and operational vulnerability of South Africa’s navy. While the exercise offers an opportunity to foster cooperation with BRICS‑Plus partners, experts like Heitman argue that without significant investment in refits and upgrades, the SA Navy will remain constrained to basic navigation and communication drills rather than the advanced war‑fighting capabilities required to secure the country’s maritime domain. • Portable Claims He Was Robbed After Loss to Carter Efe

Portable reacts to loss against Carter Efe, claims he was robbed and criticises fight conditions after Lagos boxing bout. Nigerian singer Habeeb “Portable” Badmus has disputed the outcome of his celebrity boxing match against Carter Efe, claiming he was unfairly denied victory. Portable’s reaction followed his defeat by unanimous decision at the “Chaos in the Ring 4” event held at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. The bout, which marked Portable’s first loss in the celebrity boxing scene, saw judges rule in favour of Carter Efe after three rounds. In a series of posts shared on Instagram, Portable alleged that the fight was not properly judged and accused organisers of failing to count his punches. “I was robbed. Carter Efe was wrestling while I was throwing punches, ” he said. The singer further argued that several of his strikes were ignored, insisting that all contact, including blows that landed on the arms or shoulders, should have been counted. Portable also raised concerns about the physical mismatch between the fighters, noting that Carter Efe’s height and reach gave him an advantage in the contest. “They knew he was tall and had long hands but still put him in a boxing match with me,” he said. In addition to disputing the result, Portable demanded financial compensation, claiming he was owed earnings from the event. “I want my stream money amounting to about N200 million,” he said, warning organisers to settle the amount. • Kibale Chimpanzee civil war Puts Uganda at Center of Global Research

Researchers are tracking a deadly split among Kibale’s Ngogo chimpanzees. Researchers are focusing fresh attention on Kibale Forest National Park after an NTV Uganda report highlighted deadly violence within the Ngogo chimpanzee community, one of the largest known wild chimpanzee groups. The conflict has drawn international scientific interest because researchers say the once-cohesive group split into Western and Central factions before years of lethal attacks followed. The University of Texas at Austin said the case is the first clearly documented permanent fission in wild chimpanzees, based on nearly three decades of field observations. Reuters reported that the violence began after the split, with coordinated attacks targeting adult males and infants. Researchers documented 24 deaths through 2024, with the toll later rising to 28. Scientists are treating the Ngogo case cautiously. Lead researcher Aaron Sandel warned against loosely calling it a “civil war,” while noting that the violence shows how former group members can become rivals after social bonds break down. The events have also increased attention on Kibale as a major site for primate research, conservation monitoring and wildlife tourism. Researchers are expected to continue tracking the rival groups to understand how the conflict affects chimpanzee behavior, territory and long-term population stability.
