Africa | Domestic Politics Kenya Kalonzo defends Azimio, stating they submitted Dr. Koki Muli for the IEBC panel Ayize claire Dec 8, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has defended the Azimio coalition, stating they are not to blame for delays in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Speaking on Sunday, Kalonzo confirmed Azimio had submitted their nominee for the IEBC selection panel within the required timeframe. “When Azimio was given 48 hours to forward the name of the candidate that will be in the panel that will constitute the IEBC, we gave the name of Dr. Koki Muli but there are people who are afraid of her abilities and they want to get user-friendly candidates,” he said. Kalonzo criticized those obstructing the process through court orders, calling on President William Ruto to address the situation urgently. “Everybody is concerned about this IEBC matter. William Ruto should come out of the slumber and do something. The country is waiting for him. The fellows who have gone to court are known to the state, tell them to withdraw the case and name within one week the panel, and in the next few months we should have an IEBC,” he added. This follows remarks by Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola, who accused the opposition of stalling progress, and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who urged unresolved parties to finalize their representative nominations. “It is not good for a country with a vibrant democracy like Kenya to stay for such a long time without a functional IEBC,” Kindiki emphasized. He also encouraged those with court cases to consider out-of-court settlements to expedite the process. Related Posts Kalonzo defends Azimio, stating they submitted Dr. Koki Muli for the IEBC panel . • Hussein Mohammed: The New Hope for Kenyan Football | Xtrafrica

Hussein Mohammed: The New Hope for Kenyan Football Prince Jean Dec 9, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Hussein Mohammed, the newly elected FKF president, addressing Kenyan football’s pressing issues at Kasarani Indoor Gymnasium. Hussein Mohammed has been elected as the new president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). His task is daunting, as Kenyan football faces numerous challenges requiring urgent attention. Here are the key issues he must address immediately: 1. CHAN 2024 Preparations Kenya is co-hosting the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) alongside Uganda and Tanzania. However, stadium renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo are behind schedule. With a December 31 deadline, Mohammed must accelerate preparations or risk Rwanda stepping in as a replacement host, a potential national embarrassment. 2. Resolving Engin Firat’s Future Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has underperformed, failing to secure Kenya's place in the 2025 AFCON. Despite widespread calls for his dismissal, Firat remains under contract until 2026 and has not been paid for 11 months. Mohammed faces a tough decision: either pay Firat’s dues and terminate the contract or find a way to work with him. 3. Improving Refereeing Standards Officiating in Kenyan football is at an all-time low, with match-fixing and biased calls tarnishing the game. Referees, unpaid for months, have lost morale, and some have resorted to corruption. Mohammed must ensure referees' welfare is prioritized to restore fairness and integrity. 4. Professionalizing the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Mohammed has pledged to revive the league's professionalism by reinstating an independent management system. This move could raise the league’s standards and help transition it from semi-professional to fully professional, attracting more talent and investment. 5. Attracting Sponsors Sponsorships have dwindled in recent years due to poor management and the tarnished image of Kenyan football. Mohammed must work to rebuild trust, attract sponsors, and increase fan engagement. This would ensure better pay for players and improve the overall quality of the sport. Africa | Parties South Africa DA resists Attempts by an ANC faction to Remove Minister Gwarube Ayize claire Dec 7, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Minister Siviwe Gwarube The Democratic Alliance (DA) opposes any efforts by an ANC faction to pressure the president into firing Minister Siviwe Gwarube or any DA minister for simply doing their duties. Such a move would mark the end of the Government of National Unity (GNU). This comes amidst misinformation regarding the consultation process following the president's signing of the BELA Act nearly three months ago. While clauses 4 and 5 were withheld to allow more discussions with stakeholders, these consultations remain ongoing within the GNU’s clearing house mechanism. During this time, Minister Gwarube met with Solidarity and representatives from the Presidency at NEDLAC after the union lodged a dispute. This engagement, separate from the broader consultation process, aimed to prevent strike action as required by law. The outcome was a settlement signed by the Minister of Basic Education, the Presidency, and the Union. It is both disappointing and confusing that the Presidency now distances itself from this lawful process, despite being actively involved. John Steenhuisen, DA leader, emphasized:“We support the process followed by the minister, as she was fulfilling her legally obligated responsibilities, and respect the outcome of the negotiations at NEDLAC.” The DA remains committed to bringing positive change through inclusive economic growth and job creation. Guided by South Africa’s Constitution and the rule of law, the DA will not tolerate any actions that undermine these principles. Africa | Analysis & Opinion Kenya MP Oscar Sudi defends Ruto's church donations, urging leaders to embrace giving Bahati shalom Dec 7, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has urged church leaders to be honest and fair about receiving cash donations from politicians. Speaking at AIC Pioneer Church in Eldoret during its 50th-anniversary celebrations, Sudi criticized some churches and bishops for rejecting donations from President William Ruto. The MP noted that Ruto has been a consistent supporter of churches since his days as an MP and emphasized that giving is part of his faith and commitment to community service. “This is all about God’s work and no one has the right to threaten us or say they will not receive money from Ruto because of some strange reasons,” Sudi said. Sudi also dismissed claims that donations from leaders are inappropriate, arguing that churches and community projects rely on such contributions. He added, “There was no other way to build churches or other community projects except through people giving in kind.” Sudi shared that he has been a churchgoer and donor for most of his life. He said his Christian upbringing instilled in him the importance of giving to support God’s work. "Having been raised in a Christian family and attended Sunday school, I strongly believe in the biblical principle of giving and contributing to the work of God," he stated. Nominated MP Joseph Wainaina echoed Sudi's sentiments, criticizing church leaders who reject donations as unfit for their roles. Wainaina argued that such rejections are not a punishment to Ruto but a disservice to worshippers. Sudi also took aim at social media activists who criticize government programs, calling them “useless” for misleading the public. He accused these critics of opposing initiatives like the SHA (Social Health Authority), which aims to provide affordable healthcare for Kenyans. “Personally, I’m mobilizing Kenyans to register with SHA because I know it will be useful especially for poor Kenyans,” Sudi said, urging people not to listen to those politicizing the program. Other dignitaries present at the event included First Lady Rachel Ruto, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, and Health PS Mary Muthoni.
