  • Congo Pushes Community Forests as a Climate Solution Ahead of COP30

DRC promotes community forests at COP30 as a scalable, rights-based solution to fight deforestation, empower locals, and meet climate targets. As global leaders gather in Brazil for COP30, the Democratic Republic of Congo is presenting a bold, community-driven solution to the climate crisis. A new briefing released by over 20 Congolese civil society and Indigenous groups makes the case for community forestry as a key strategy to fight deforestation, protect biodiversity, and improve rural livelihoods. The DRC is home to 60% of the world’s second-largest rainforest and has a significant influence on the global climate. Since 2016, its legal framework has allowed local communities to claim and manage forest land — up to 50,000 hectares each — for conservation, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem services. Today, 227 community forests already cover over 4.5 million hectares, with potential for much more. The briefing aligns community forestry with DRC’s major international commitments, including its updated climate targets (NDCs), the Congo Basin Compact, and the 30x30 biodiversity pledge. It also highlights the “Couloir Vert” — the world’s largest community forest corridor stretching from Beni to Kinshasa. Civil society is calling for greater funding, legal reforms, and national expansion of this model. “Community forestry works,” the document states. “It secures rights, protects forests, and supports livelihoods.” As Congo positions itself as a solutions country, it asks the international community to invest in local, rights-based approaches to climate justice. 🔗 Download the full briefing: “ Community Forests in DRC: A Solution for a ‘Solutions Country’” – Nov 2025 AGRICULTURE Congo Pushes Community Forests as a Climate Solution Ahead of COP30 By Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Political Analyst Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Home Comment Nov 11, 2025 May 15, 2026 2 min read Copy link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Published Updated: As global leaders gather in Brazil for COP30, the Democratic Republic of Congo is presenting a bold, community-driven solution to the climate crisis. • 2026 FIFA World Cup Begins: Do 10 African Teams Stand a Chance?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens with 48 teams and a record African presence. Can the continent finally challenge for football's biggest prize? The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, opening a historic edition that expands the tournament to 48 teams and 104 matches. For Africa, the new format marks a major moment. The continent has 10 representatives at the tournament, its largest-ever World Cup presence, giving African football a wider platform than in previous editions . The expanded format is confirmed by FIFA’s official match schedule , which lists 104 matches in the first 48-team men’s World Cup. The tournament is also the first to be jointly hosted by three countries. Africa’s hopes are shaped by history. As it is noted , Morocco’s 2022 semi-final run remains the continent’s best-ever World Cup performance, surpassing earlier quarter-final runs by Cameroon, Senegal, and Ghana. The bigger question now is whether a larger African presence can translate into deeper progress. More teams mean more exposure, more competitive experience, and more chances to reach the knockout stages. DR Congo’s return adds another major storyline. The Leopards are back at the World Cup after a 52-year absence, making this edition especially significant for Congolese football and for African representation as a whole. Still, no African nation has ever reached a World Cup final. That remains the line this generation is trying to cross. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, Africa enters with numbers, momentum, and belief. Whether that is enough to produce a historic breakthrough will be one of the tournament’s biggest storylines. • Jeffrey Nortey Says He Refuses To Be Boxed In

Jeffrey Nortey returns with 3 Faces of Jeffrey Nortey at Ghana’s National Theatre, promising film, stage and street storytelling. Jeffrey Nortey is not interested in becoming predictable. The Ghanaian actor, comedian and skitmaker is preparing to return with this year’s edition of 3 Faces of Jeffrey Nortey, and his message is clear: he does not want to be trapped in one creative lane. According to Local Ghana News, Nortey said his need to keep evolving is not a branding trick, but part of how he sees creativity. For him, growth comes from trying new forms, testing new ideas and refusing to let audiences define him by one role. “I don’t like being boxed. As a creative, I always want to explore new ideas and find different ways of telling stories. This year’s show is a reflection of that mindset,” he said. This year’s 3 Faces of Jeffrey Nortey is scheduled for Friday, June 12, at the National Theatre in Ghana. The production will be built around three ideas: film, stage and street, giving audiences a wider view of Nortey’s range as a performer. That format feels intentional. Nortey has built his reputation on movement — shifting between comedy, drama, spoken word, social commentary and character work without losing his connection with everyday Ghanaian life. Over the years, 3 Faces of Jeffrey Nortey has become one of Ghana’s notable comedy-theatre productions. Its appeal comes from the way it mixes humour with social observation, making people laugh while still giving them something to think about. Last year’s edition reportedly filled the National Theatre despite heavy rain. Audiences praised Nortey’s ability to move between different characters and themes while keeping the room engaged. That consistency has helped position him as one of Ghana’s more daring young entertainers — someone willing to stretch a working formula instead of repeating it safely. Details about this year’s supporting acts have not yet been revealed, but Nortey says fans should expect a bigger and more memorable show. • How Does a Hadzabe Boy Get a Wife?

Learn how a Hadzabe young man becomes married, from courtship and family approval to hunting reputation and co-residence. Among the Hadzabe , also called the Hadza, a young man does not usually “get a wife” through a big wedding, bride price, or a formal arranged marriage system. The better way to ask the question is: How does a Hadzabe young man become married? The answer is quieter, more flexible, and more human than many outsiders expect. The Hadza are a small hunter-gatherer people living around Lake Eyasi in northern Tanzania. In traditional Hadza life, marriage is usually recognized when a young man and a young woman form a relationship and begin living together. Courtship matters. Mutual choice matters. Family opinion can matter. A young man’s reputation as a capable hunter or forager can also matter. But the evidence does not support the idea that a Hadzabe boy simply buys, claims, or is handed a wife. According to Katherine Fitzpatrick’s University of Cambridge thesis, when a Hadza couple lives together in a hut, they are “soon recognised as married,” even “without a marriage ceremony” (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 19). That small detail tells us a lot. Marriage is less about a public spectacle and more about a relationship becoming visible to the camp. Who Are the Hadzabe? The Hadzabe are one of East Africa’s best-known hunter-gatherer peoples. They live around Lake Eyasi in northern Tanzania, in a landscape of savanna, woodland, rocky areas, and seasonal water sources. The Culture and the Mind Hadza fieldsite describes the Hadza as a population whose identity is tied to place, language, kinship, and foraging life. Their language, Hadzane , contains click consonants and is often treated by linguists as a language isolate. Fitzpatrick notes that Hadza identity is strongly connected to language, citing Frank Marlowe’s view that speaking Hadzane is the “best criterion” for identifying who is Hadza (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 17). Read more about the hadza language here But Hadza life is not frozen in the past. Some Hadza still live largely by hunting and gathering, while others live closer to villages, schools, markets, wage labor, and tourism. This matters because marriage practices can vary with modern pressures. Continue Reading Full Article AFRICAN CULTURE How Does a Hadzabe Boy Get a Wife? Read more about the hadza language here But Hadza life is not frozen in the past. Some Hadza still live largely by hunting and gathering, while others live closer to villages, schools, markets, wage labor, and tourism. This matters because marriage practices can vary with modern pressures. Marriage Is Not Usually A Big Ceremony In many societies, marriage is marked by a public ceremony, bridewealth, church service, government paperwork, or a large family gathering. Among the Hadza, the strongest sources point to a simpler form of recognition. Hadzabe young woman and man Fitzpatrick writes that when a couple shares a hut, they are soon treated as married, even without a formal ceremony (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 19). This does not mean marriage is casual or meaningless. It means the social sign of marriage is often co-residence: the couple begins living together, and the camp recognizes the relationship. ADVERTISEMENT A University of Missouri DICE teaching sheet also states that Hadza “marriages are not arranged” and that marriage involves a couple who has been courting and then begins to live together. This source is useful but weaker than a thesis or peer-reviewed paper, so it should be used carefully. Still, it agrees with the stronger evidence that marriage is not mainly built around a grand wedding ceremony or arranged exchange. Courtship And Choice So how does a Hadzabe young man begin? The available evidence suggests that he expresses interest, courts the young woman, and the relationship develops. One source says a young man may use a middleman to tell the girl he is interested, but this detail needs more verification before it can be treated as universal Hadza practice. Among the Hadza, hunting is considered one of the essential skills a young man should master before thinking about marriage. What is better supported is that Hadza marriage involves personal choice. James Woodburn’s classic work on Hadza social organization describes a society where “individuals have a choice of whom they associate with” (Woodburn, 1982, p. 435). That flexibility applies broadly to residence, association, and social life. This does not mean families are irrelevant. The Missouri DICE source says young people may seek parental approval and that parents rarely object strongly. But the evidence does not support a rigid system where parents simply arrange the marriage and the couple obeys. In plain English: a Hadzabe boy does not usually get a wife by having elders assign one to him. He must be accepted by the woman herself. Does A Hadzabe Boy Pay Bride Price? The sources consulted do not show bride price, dowry, or bride service as the main Hadza marriage system. The University of Missouri DICE sheet states: “Bride purchase… dowry?: No.” That point is important because many African marriage systems include bridewealth in cattle, money, labor, or goods. It would be inaccurate to assume the Hadza follow the same pattern. However, absence of bridewealth does not mean absence of standards. A young man’s abilities, character, and reputation still matter. Instead of proving himself through cattle payments or farm wealth, a Hadza man may be judged through qualities that make sense in a foraging society. Hunting Reputation Matters In Hadza society, a good hunting reputation is widely regarded as an important quality in a prospective husband, reflecting skill, reliability, and the ability to contribute to the camp's food supply Several sources show that hunting and foraging reputation can affect Hadza male marriage prospects. In An Introduction to Hadza Ecology, James Woodburn observed that a man who is unsuccessful in hunting big game may find it “difficult to marry a wife” or keep one (Woodburn, 1968, p. 54). That does not mean every man must be a famous hunter before he can marry. It means hunting ability can influence how others see him. ADVERTISEMENT Frank Marlowe’s mate preference study also supports this point. In his article Mate Preferences among Hadza Hunter-Gatherers, Marlowe found that “Women place great importance on men’s foraging” (Marlowe, 2004, p. 365). He also found that both men and women value character. This gives us a more balanced picture. A woman may look at whether he is hardworking, capable, generous, and able to contribute food. A Hadzabe young man’s attractiveness is not only about physical appearance or boldness. Later research also connects hunting reputation with male status and reproductive success. Smith and colleagues write that hunting ability is an “important criterion for choosing husbands” among the Hadza (Smith et al., 2017). But they also note that scholars debate why men hunt: is it mainly to feed their families, build reputation, attract mates, or support the wider camp? The safest answer is: hunting reputation matters , but it is not the whole story. What Does A Wife Gain From Marriage? A Hadza woman is not simply dependent on a husband for survival. Woodburn’s work on Hadza egalitarian society shows that Hadza women and men both have strong food-producing roles. Women gather plant foods and often feed themselves and others through their own labor. Still, husbands can matter in specific moments. Fitzpatrick’s thesis records Hadza women describing help from husbands during pregnancy and other times when women may not forage as usual. One woman explained, “the husband brings you food” (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 170). Fitzpatrick later notes that when women stay home, husbands and mothers are important food providers (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 194). This matters for marriage. A good husband may be valued not because he controls his wife, but because he can help, provide, and stay present when support is needed. Where Do The Couple Live? After marriage, Hadza residence is flexible. A couple may live near the wife’s kin, the husband’s kin, or in a camp without close kin from either side. The Culture and the Mind Hadza fieldsite says residence patterns vary, with a slight bias toward living with the wife’s kin. Couple Outside a Traditional Hadza Hut explaining that marriage is recognized when a couple begins living together. Fitzpatrick also writes that “remaining with the wife’s kin is common” (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 19). This is useful because it challenges the assumption that marriage always pulls a woman into the husband’s family. Among the Hadza, movement is more flexible. This flexibility also affects divorce and remarriage. If a couple separates, the marriage may end through the simple fact that they stop living together. The available evidence suggests that marriage is socially real, but not locked in by heavy property transfers or rigid institutions. Hadza marriage should not be romanticized as effortless. Jealousy, conflict, separation, and remarriage are all part of the record. The DICE source states that divorce is common, especially early in marriage, and may simply involve the couple ceasing to live together. Because the source is not the strongest academic evidence, this claim should be handled with care. But it is consistent with the broader picture of flexible co-residence and personal autonomy. A Hadzabe young man therefore does not just “get” a wife once and keep her automatically. He must maintain the relationship. Woodburn’s point is important here: a man may find it harder not only to marry but also to keep a wife if he lacks hunting success ( Woodburn , 1968, p. 54). Marriage is not only an entry point. It is an ongoing relationship. What Outsiders Often Get Wrong The biggest mistake is to describe Hadza marriage as if a man owns a woman. That language does not match the evidence. A Hadza wife is not simply purchased, transferred, or controlled through a formal bridewealth system. Portraits of two young Hadza women from northern Tanzania. Another mistake is to reduce everything to hunting. Hunting reputation can help a young man, but marriage is also about choice, character, co-residence, and daily cooperation. A third mistake is to treat all Hadza life as one unchanging tradition. Modern Hadza communities differ. Some people live in more mobile bush camps; others live closer to villages, schools, markets, and tourism. A Hadzabe boy becomes a husband through a relationship, not through ownership. He may express interest in a young woman, court her, and eventually begin living with her. Once they share a hut and the camp recognizes the relationship, they may be considered married. His reputation matters. If he is a capable hunter, a good forager, hardworking, and respected, he may have better chances. But he does not simply “earn” a wife by killing an animal or paying a bride price. The woman’s choice matters. Family opinion may matter. Daily support matters. The most accurate answer is simple: among the Hadza, a young man gets a wife when a young woman chooses him too, and their relationship becomes visible through living together. Deep dive into the growing accusations of betrayal against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye following the sacking of PM Ousmane Sonko. Explore social media reactions. Dakar–, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government, ending a celebrated alliance that propelled the PASTEF movement to power in 2024 under the unifying slogan "Diomaye mooy Sonko" (Diomaye is Sonko). What began as a symbol of hope for change has devolved into accusations of betrayal, with thousands of online supporters, youth activists, and former allies rallying emotionally behind the charismatic Sonko, portraying Faye as a traitor who turned against the very force that made his presidency possible. Timeline of the Diomaye–Sonko Alliance and Fallout 2024 Election: Sonko, barred from running, anoints Faye as candidate. Their joint campaign captures anti-establishment sentiment, defeating incumbents amid youth mobilization. Post-Election: Faye appoints Sonko as PM.
