In a significant development amidst the ongoing oil importation dispute between Kenya and Uganda, Tanzania has stepped in with a set of compelling offers to Uganda that could potentially reshape the dynamics of oil trade in East Africa. Under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania has proposed to allow the Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) to utilize the Dar es Salaam port for importing fuel into Uganda. This move comes at a crucial time as Kenya remains steadfast in its position against Uganda's importation demands, leading to a legal battle at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ). While the case is still pending, with no clear timelines for a resolution, there are indications that Uganda might consider withdrawing the lawsuit, a development that Kenya is eagerly anticipating. The tension between Kenya and Uganda took a diplomatic turn when Presidents William Ruto, Yoweri Museveni, and Samia Suluhu Hassan convened in an extraordinary tripartite meeting in Zanzibar. This meeting, reportedly initiated by Uganda, aimed to secure a smooth pathway for the importation of petroleum and other essential products into Uganda, amidst the ongoing impasse. Tanzania's timely intervention by offering an alternative route for Uganda's oil imports through the Dar es Salaam port is a testament to the evolving landscape of regional cooperation and economic strategies in East Africa. This strategic move not only offers Uganda a viable solution to its current predicament but also highlights Tanzania's growing influence and proactive approach in regional trade and diplomacy. The unfolding scenario underscores the intricate balance of geopolitical interests, economic strategies, and the pursuit of regional stability and cooperation among East African nations. As the situation evolves, the outcomes of these high-level engagements and Tanzania's offer to Uganda could have lasting implications on the region's trade routes, alliances, and economic frameworks, signaling a new chapter in East African geopolitics and trade relations . - Jay-Z Urged Bad Bunny to Take Creative Risks for Super Bowl
Jay-Z reportedly pushed Bad Bunny toward bold creative choices for his Super Bowl halftime show, emphasizing culture, identity, and impact. Jay-Z played a key behind-the-scenes role in shaping Bad Bunny’s approach to his Super Bowl halftime performance, according to sources familiar with the planning. Since the halftime show was announced, Jay-Z — who serves as the NFL’s live music entertainment strategist through Roc Nation — has encouraged the Puerto Rican artist to deliver a performance that prioritizes cultural expression and creative confidence rather than restraint. Sources said discussions included the possibility of unconventional fashion choices and the visible display of the Puerto Rican flag on the global stage. Insiders emphasized that the aim was not provocation, but representation. “Jay-Z wants the performance to feel fearless,” one source said, adding that the focus is on cultural meaning rather than shock value. Jay-Z’s influence over halftime programming comes through his long-standing partnership with the NFL, as well as his involvement in the league’s Inspire Change initiative, which promotes themes of identity, representation, and social impact. Another source said the creative direction reflects Bad Bunny’s public image as an artist known for challenging traditional norms and embracing authenticity. While it remains unclear whether all proposed elements will appear in the final performance, sources agreed that the overarching goal is to deliver a halftime show that leaves a lasting impression. - Yemi Alade Biography: Age, Heritage, Songs & Grammy Nomination
Yemi Alade biography: age, real name, heritage, songs, albums, awards, Grammy nomination and rise from Johnny to Mama Africa. Yemi Alade is a Nigerian Afropop singer, songwriter and performer whose energetic live shows, multilingual records and richly styled videos have built audiences across Africa and beyond. Born Yemi Eberechi Alade, she shares career updates through her official Instagram and X account . Her defining breakthrough, “Johnny,” became one of the most recognisable African pop songs of the 2010s. She later expanded that success through the Mama Africa identity, a catalogue shaped by highlife, Afropop, R&B, dancehall and collaborations spanning the continent. Her 2024 album Rebel Queen produced “Tomorrow,” which earned her first competitive Grammy nomination. Who is Yemi Alade? Yemi Alade is a Nigerian Afropop star known as Mama Africa. She rose internationally with “Johnny,” built a multilingual pan-African catalogue, won consecutive MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Female and earned a Grammy nomination for “Tomorrow.” The “Johnny” Breakthrough That Changed Her Scale Yemi Alade had already spent years pursuing music when “Johnny” arrived in 2013. The playful record tells its story through a memorable character, a sharp chorus and a video structured almost like a comic investigation. It did more than give her a hit in Nigeria: it travelled across language markets and gave listeners throughout Africa an immediately recognisable Yemi Alade character. The Recording Academy’s career interview records that its video made her the first Nigerian female artist to pass 100 million YouTube views. That scale turned a promising singer into a continental pop figure and created the platform for her debut album, King of Queens . It also showed why narrative would remain central to her records and visuals. Alade explained the creative principle directly in the same interview: “Storytelling is a big part of my artistry, because I feel everybody loves a good story.” The song did not define her entire career, but it established the tools she would keep refining: strong characters, dance-ready production, fashion, humour and visual storytelling. Readers can explore her newer catalogue through Yemi Alade’s XTRAfrica songs page . Early Life Before the Hit: Lagos, Geography and a Talent-Show Decision Yemi Eberechi Alade was born on 13 March 1989 in Abia State, according to her Apple Music artist record . She was raised in Nigeria and later studied geography at the University of Lagos. Her father came from Ondo State in Nigeria’s southwest, while her mother is Igbo and from the southeast. She has publicly described both backgrounds as important to the way she connects with people. Music was not initially presented as the obvious professional route. In a Guardian Life interview , Alade said geography came naturally to her. A friend encouraged her to enter the Peak Talent Show, which she won in 2009 while she was still a university student. The victory became the evidence she needed to treat music as a career rather than a private interest. “When I won the talent show, it became the strongest conviction I had about music.” Winning opened a door, but it did not create an instant national star. Her later breakthrough matters precisely because there was a long development period between the competition and “Johnny.” That interval taught her how to perform, record and hold an audience before a mass hit changed the scale of her work. ADVERTISEMENT Heritage and Language Across Africa King of Queens arrived in 2014 and placed “Johnny” inside a broader Afropop world. The follow-up, Mama Africa (2016), clarified the larger ambition. Rather than treating Africa as a single sound, Alade worked with artists from different regions and recorded versions of songs in languages including French and Swahili. Her output also drew from highlife, reggae, R&B, dancehall and later amapiano. Her mixed family background is part of that outlook, but Alade describes it as lived identity rather than a marketing label. Speaking to Punch , she said: “Being partly Yoruba and Igbo is a big plus for me.” Awards and Artistic Craft Across Albums That ability to move among languages and regional collaborations helped her build unusually strong followings in East, West and Central Africa. Albums such as Black Magic (2017), Woman of Steel (2019) and Empress (2020) kept adjusting the balance between dance records, romantic storytelling and public confidence. Selected career achievements include: Winning MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Female in both 2015 and 2016. Winning The Headies’ Best Performer category in 2018 and 2019. Appearing on Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift project in 2019. Becoming a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador in 2020. Performing the official AFCON song “Akwaba” at the tournament’s 2024 opening ceremony. Receiving a Grammy nomination for “Tomorrow” at the 67th Grammy Awards. Her collaborations also demonstrate how deliberately she has worked across borders: Angélique Kidjo, Sauti Sol, Diamond Platnumz, Rick Ross, Dadju, Ziggy Marley and Beyoncé all occupy different parts of that map. Rebel Queen , “Tomorrow” and Grammy Recognition Released in July 2024, Rebel Queen revisited sounds Alade remembered from childhood while connecting them with contemporary African pop. In an OkayAfrica interview , she explained that the project moved through highlife, reggae, R&B, Afropop and amapiano. The title also reflected her resistance to being reduced to one hit, one genre or one visual identity. “On this album, I am my own muse.” The album’s single “Tomorrow” earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance. The Recording Academy’s official artist record lists one nomination and no competitive win, an important distinction from her participation in other Grammy-recognised projects. Tems won the category in 2025 with “Love Me JeJe.” The nomination placed Alade within a new formal Grammy category after she had already spent a decade helping African pop travel internationally. It also connected her generation with younger global stars, including Tyla’s Grammy-winning rise . XTRAfrica’s later coverage of the 2026 African Grammy nominees shows how broad that international field has become. Career Timeline Year Event Significance 2009 Won the Peak Talent Show Gave Alade the confidence and industry entry point to pursue music professionally. 2013 Released “Johnny” Created the breakthrough that moved her from a Nigerian prospect to a continental star. 2014 Released King of Queens Turned a major single into a full debut-era catalogue. 2015–2016 Won consecutive MAMA Best Female awards Confirmed sustained recognition across African music markets. 2019 Appeared on The Lion King: The Gift Connected her pan-African career with a major global project led by Beyoncé. 2020 Appointed UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Extended her public role into gender equality, climate awareness and development advocacy. 2024 Released Rebel Queen and performed at AFCON Joined artistic reinvention with one of Africa’s largest sporting stages. 2025 Received her first Grammy nomination Brought official Recording Academy recognition for “Tomorrow.” 2026 Released “Don’t Be Shy” with Bien Opened the announced It’s Yemi Alade era through another cross-regional collaboration. The Personal Journey Behind the Stage Alade’s public image is exuberant, but her interviews reveal a disciplined relationship with work. She has described music as both a profession and a form of therapy, while touring turned her university subject geography into lived experience. Her career has also given her the ability to support her family, an achievement she told Grammy.com she values deeply. She keeps romantic relationships private, so responsible biography should not convert speculation into a partner, marriage or children claim. The better-documented personal story is her refusal to accept a narrow role for women in African pop. She credits earlier women, supports newer performers and repeatedly frames resilience as action rather than victimhood. ADVERTISEMENT Legacy and Impact Beyond Pop Alade’s “Mama Africa” identity is strongest when it describes practice rather than a slogan. Her multilingual recordings, visual celebration of African fashion and repeated regional collaborations have helped audiences meet African pop as modern, joyful and internally diverse. She was part of a generation that built continental circulation before the present streaming-era global boom. Her work also reaches beyond commercial music. The United Nations Development Programme appointed her a Goodwill Ambassador in September 2020, focusing her advocacy on inequality, gender equality and the effects of climate change on women and girls. In 2025, she recorded “You Are” for the animated series Iyanu . During an ABC News interview , she discussed protecting the story’s Nigerian cultural setting and Yoruba mythology. Her place in African pop should not be reduced to being a predecessor to younger women. She remains an active recording and touring artist with a distinct stage language. Still, the international visibility now enjoyed by African women is easier to understand alongside the barriers Alade encountered and the markets she helped connect. The continuing range of winners covered in XTRAfrica’s 2026 African Grammy report reflects that expanding space. “Don’t Be Shy” and What Comes Next In 2026, Alade reunited creatively with Kenyan singer Bien for “Don’t Be Shy,” a warm blend of Afropop, R&B and Kompa. The XTRAfrica song page records its July release, while Kenya Broadcasting Corporation reported that it introduces a forthcoming self-titled project, It’s Yemi Alade . Because that album was still announced rather than released by 29 July 2026, Rebel Queen remains her latest studio album. Discussing the collaboration in the KBC interview , she reduced the song’s purpose to a principle that also explains much of her catalogue: “Music has always been about emotion and connection for me.” That direction suits an artist whose career has depended on connection across language, geography and genre. Her next album will be judged not by whether it recreates “Johnny,” but by how a veteran pop performer translates that same openness into a new decade. Yemi Alade FAQs What is Yemi Alade’s real name? - Grand Inga Moves Forward as RDC-US Committee Meets in Paris
DR Congo and US officials launch a Grand Inga coordination committee in Paris with World Bank participation to advance financing, governance and energy planning. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States have activated a new coordination mechanism for Grand Inga, bringing the Congolese government, U.S. representatives and the World Bank together in Paris to organise the project's development and mobilise investment. KINSHASA — October 26, 2026 — The Grand Inga hydropower vision has entered a new phase after the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States convened the inaugural meeting of their Coordination and Governance Committee for the project in Paris. The October 26 meeting was led on the Congolese side by Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of the National Economy Daniel Mukoko Samba. It followed several preparatory sessions between the Congolese delegation and officials from the World Bank Group on the technical, economic and financial conditions required for the progressive development of Grand Inga. The committee was established under Article X of the strategic partnership agreement signed by the DRC and the United States in Washington on December 4, 2025. Its first session gives the two countries a dedicated structure for coordinating partners, defining priorities and mobilising the capital needed to advance one of the world's most important hydropower ambitions. The official Ministry of the National Economy update said the Paris discussions covered energy requirements, electricity-transmission infrastructure and the technical, economic and financial conditions needed for implementation. A Dedicated RDC-US Mechanism for Grand Inga The inaugural meeting was co-chaired by Daniel Mukoko Samba and Jeremy Wiggins, representing the United States Department of the Treasury, with the World Bank participating in the discussions. According to reporting on the completed Paris session , the meeting focused on three closely connected priorities: mobilising investment, establishing the project's economic viability and positioning Grand Inga as an engine of Congolese industrialisation. The committee provides equal representation for the DRC and the United States. Its mandate includes coordinating efforts to attract financing from international financial institutions, multilateral development banks, export-credit agencies, private investors and other technical and financial partners. The framework also allows collaboration with the private sector and civil society where appropriate. This gives the committee a broad platform for connecting government leadership with institutions capable of providing capital, technology, project-development expertise and long-term investment. ADVERTISEMENT The framework also allows collaboration with the private sector and civil society where appropriate. This gives the committee a broad platform for connecting government leadership with institutions capable of providing capital, technology, project-development expertise and long-term investment. Congo Brings Its Key Institutions to the Table The Congolese delegation in Paris brought together the public institutions directly involved in economic planning, energy development, project finance and national coordination. Representatives came from the ministries of the National Economy, Finance, and Water Resources and Electricity, together with the Presidency, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Agency for the Development and Promotion of Grand Inga, the National Electricity Company and the Congolese diplomatic mission in France. This interinstitutional presence reflects the scale of Grand Inga. Developing the project requires more than construction at the Inga site. It also involves electricity-transmission systems, demand planning, investment mobilisation, industrial strategy, environmental and social preparation, legal coordination and long-term project governance. The Paris committee creates a single forum in which these components can be coordinated with international partners. World Bank Supports Project Structuring The meeting was organised at the World Bank's offices in Paris, following preparatory sessions with officials from the institution. The World Bank's involvement is important because Grand Inga requires a structured, phased approach capable of attracting multiple sources of public and private finance. The Paris discussions examined how the project can be developed progressively while aligning energy production with transmission infrastructure and the needs of the Congolese economy. The official Grand Inga development agency said the committee will serve as a principal consultation and coordination platform for the project's advancement and the mobilisation of the resources required for its development. ADVERTISEMENT The first session was designed to establish the committee's operating arrangements, identify its priority workstreams, examine the main development issues and define the next stages of cooperation. This builds on broader cooperation between the DRC and the World Bank around Grand Inga. The institution is already supporting the Programme for the Development of Inga 3 through a multiphase structure that strengthens studies, project preparation and implementation capacity. From Electricity Production to Industrial Transformation For the Congolese government, Grand Inga is not being pursued as an electricity project alone. It is a national economic platform capable of powering industrialisation, mineral processing, manufacturing, infrastructure development and wider access to energy. Reliable large-scale electricity can support the local transformation of Congolese minerals and other natural resources. It can also enable factories, processing plants, transport systems and new economic zones to operate with the energy required for competitive production. The Paris talks therefore examined both electricity generation and the infrastructure needed to transport that power to users. Matching production with national energy demand and transmission capacity is central to ensuring that Grand Inga supports households, businesses, industries and communities inside the DRC. The government's objective is to use the project to stimulate local value addition, create employment, expand industrial activity and improve living conditions. Strategic Partnership Becomes an Operational Framework The committee is a direct implementation mechanism created by the RDC-US strategic partnership agreement. ADVERTISEMENT The Ministry of the National Economy's record of the December 2025 signing describes the agreement as a major step in bilateral relations, bringing Congolese economic priorities into a durable framework of cooperation with the United States. Article X gives Grand Inga a defined place within that partnership. By convening the committee in Paris, the two countries have moved from the agreement's institutional design to an active coordination structure focused on project development and investment mobilisation. The new mechanism also complements national coordination already underway in Kinshasa. Earlier in October, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka led the second meeting of the RDC-US task force, while President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo chaired the first meeting of the Grand Inga strategic council. These structures connect the Presidency, government ministries, ADPI-RDC and international partners around a common implementation agenda. A Presidential Vision for Energy and Development President Tshisekedi has positioned Grand Inga as a strategic project for expanding electricity access and accelerating the economic development of the DRC. During the Grand Inga strategic council meeting on October 8, the President directed the responsible institutions to strengthen governance, complete strategic studies, mobilise investors and the private sector, consolidate the legal framework and produce practical benefits for Congolese communities. The Presidency's official account of that meeting states that the long-term Grand Inga vision targets up to 40,000 megawatts of generation capacity to serve national and regional needs. The Presidency also presented employment creation, greater access to electricity and improved living conditions as central expected benefits. The development model places Congolese interests at the centre: national energy security, local industrialisation, economic sovereignty and tangible progress for communities. - Uganda's $328m DRDIP II: Refugee District Funds Under Scrutiny
Uganda's $328m DRDIP II enters implementation review. See the financing split, planned services, district-count differences and accountability demands. KAMPALA, Uganda — 4 November 2026. The Ugandan government has warned that district allocations under the $328 million Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project Phase II (DRDIP II) could be cancelled or reassigned if funds are diverted from their intended use. The warning, attributed to programme director Dr Robert Limlim, comes during a joint implementation-support mission involving the Office of the Prime Minister and World Bank. The November 4 account of the funding warning follows the mission's opening on November 2 . Officials are examining how a programme intended to improve essential services, environmental conditions and local incomes can turn approved financing into completed work in communities hosting refugees. What is Uganda's DRDIP II project doing now? The government and World Bank are reviewing the rollout of an existing $328 million development programme for refugee-hosting communities. Officials have warned districts against misuse of funds. Schools, healthcare, water systems, livelihoods and environmental restoration are among the planned investments, but individual projects still require delivery and verification. The test is delivery, not another funding announcement The $328 million was not first approved this week. The World Bank's June 2025 approval record identifies financing for DRDIP II, while Uganda's Parliament said in September 2026 that implementation was scheduled to begin in October. This week's developments concern oversight and practical rollout, rather than an additional $328 million commitment. The government–World Bank joint mission opened in Kampala on November 2 and is scheduled to run until Friday, November 6 , according to Nile Post. Its purpose is to assess progress, identify problems and agree on measures to move activities forward. A review meeting is evidence of institutional work, not proof that a particular classroom, borehole or road has already been completed under Phase II. Limlim's reported warning gives the exercise a sharper test: districts must use allocations for their designated purpose or risk losing them. That is a stated enforcement position, not evidence that a particular district has already been found responsible for diversion or sanctioned. Residents will be able to judge the programme more meaningfully when authorities disclose allocations, works contracts and site-level progress. How the $328 million is financed The approved financing comprises $180.5 million in credit and $147.5 million in grants from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA), according to the board's June 4, 2025 record. These amounts add up to the widely reported $328 million World Bank package. The credit portion creates a different obligation for Uganda from the grant portion, which is why the distinction matters to taxpayers. These amounts add up to the widely reported $328 million World Bank package. The credit portion creates a different obligation for Uganda from the grant portion, which is why the distinction matters to taxpayers. ADVERTISEMENT The World Bank's project information document separately described $10 million in non-World Bank commercial financing within an estimated $338 million total operation cost at appraisal. That is not an additional World Bank grant, and the early appraisal estimate should not be mistaken for the amount already spent by November 2026. The newly reported description of the $328 million as an equal split between credit and grants does not match the amounts in the approval record. Readers and district officials should therefore use the approved lender figures when discussing the financing structure. Neither the total approved envelope nor a planned district allocation establishes how much cash has been disbursed or what contracts have been completed. What communities are expected to gain The World Bank's March 2026 account projects benefits for around three million people, including one million refugees , through expanded infrastructure, public services and environmental investment. It also anticipates at least 60,000 new or better jobs and 6.1 million workdays through public works. These are expected outcomes for Phase II, not an independent count of jobs already created. The programme addresses several connected pressures. Schools in refugee-hosting areas serve local families and displaced children; health facilities and water points must meet demand from growing populations; and roads used by residents, farmers and relief deliveries require maintenance. Restoring degraded land and developing more sustainable sources of energy or livelihoods could reduce pressure on surrounding forests. According to the November 2 mission report , the main workstreams are public-service infrastructure, environmental restoration and livelihood assistance. They include construction or rehabilitation of schools and healthcare facilities, as well as enterprise support intended to help households earn more stable incomes. The physical investments will matter most where they address a documented local need. A completed water system must supply usable water and have a maintenance plan. A renovated health centre needs staff and supplies as well as walls and equipment. Community involvement in identifying priorities can help determine whether an investment serves both refugee and host households. This is related to, but distinct from, the infrastructure planning challenges examined in XTRAfrica's Uganda electricity mapping report : an identified need becomes a public benefit only when funding, construction and long-term service provision come together. ADVERTISEMENT Why district figures must be reconciled Public descriptions do not consistently identify how many refugee-hosting districts are covered by DRDIP II. The Uganda Broadcasting Corporation’s account of the September parliamentary briefing referred to 14 ; the November 4 report referred to 13 ; and the November 2 mission account identified 12 refugee-hosting districts plus six transit districts . Those counts should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. This difference may reflect changing implementation lists, the separate treatment of refugee-hosting and transit areas, or administrative classifications. No single reconciled district-by-district allocation schedule has been established by those reports. A current official list identifying the funding categories, beneficiary locations and district allocations would make public scrutiny substantially easier. For a household or district leader, eligibility is a practical issue: an announced nationwide total does not tell a village which works it can expect. The programme should be measured against confirmed district plans and published project locations rather than assumptions drawn from a national figure. Parliament's unfinished-business question There is an important accountability issue from the previous phase. In September, the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation’s report on the Parliamentary Committee on Presidential Affairs challenged the government to account for incomplete DRDIP Phase I projects. Committee chair Martin Mapenduzi Ojara asked for a detailed report on unfinished works and their costs. Other members raised concerns about delayed disbursements and weak coordination with local governments. That parliamentary demand is not proof of theft or corruption. It is a documented question about completion, spending and institutional follow-through. But it directly affects Phase II credibility: communities that were promised a facility under the first programme need to know whether it will be finished before a successor project begins nearby. The World Bank has reported meaningful Phase I achievements, including investment in schools, livelihoods and environmental rehabilitation. Its March feature says the earlier programme created employment opportunities for more than 174,000 people and contributed to school improvements. Such aggregate figures are useful background, but they do not answer Parliament's narrower question about the status of individual unfinished projects. Uganda has faced similar implementation questions elsewhere. XTRAfrica's Unyama irrigation coverage shows why the existence of a financed infrastructure scheme must be distinguished from actual delivery and resolution of local concerns. ADVERTISEMENT What credible oversight would look like The government has said monitoring and accountability will be major elements of DRDIP II. For that to translate into public confidence, district-level records should show which works were selected, their approved budgets, contractor and procurement details, start dates, completion certificates and who is responsible for operation after handover. Community reporting can provide a second check. Refugee and host-community representatives can raise concerns about whether facilities are accessible, whether promised jobs are available and whether women, young people and vulnerable households can participate. Grievance mechanisms matter especially when projects involve land, cash grants or access to natural resources. Environmental restoration deserves the same attention as visible buildings. New woodlots or rehabilitated areas need survival and maintenance checks after planting, while livelihood activities should be assessed for lasting income rather than the number of training sessions conducted. Uganda's wider debates over sustainable use of northern forests, covered in XTRAfrica's charcoal-policy explainer , illustrate how environmental objectives interact with household costs and employment. The Finance Ministry's September 2026 portfolio review identified procurement, designs, approvals, land acquisition, funding and contract management among obstacles requiring attention across World Bank-supported projects. Those general concerns are relevant questions to ask of DRDIP II; they are not findings that this programme has committed each of those failings. What to watch before the end of the mission The next near-term milestone is the joint implementation-support mission's scheduled conclusion on November 6, 2026 . The practical value of that exercise will depend on what the government and World Bank disclose afterward: district allocations, procurement progress, physical works underway, safeguards, and a timetable for resolving old incomplete projects. For a programme designed to support people uprooted by conflict alongside the Ugandans hosting them, the measurable result is not the headline financing figure. It is a school that opens, a water point that works, a repaired road that remains passable and livelihoods that continue when project teams leave. - Najib Balala Says Death Rumour Is False
Najib Balala says he is alive and well after false death reports circulated in Kenya. The illness claim attached to the hoax is unsupported NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala said on Saturday evening, 5 September 2026, that he is alive and well, directly rejecting false reports of his death that had circulated on social media. Balala's short first-person statement is the decisive evidence. “I am well and in good spirits,” he said in wording carried by The Star and other Kenyan outlets. He described the information as misleading and unfounded. Is Najib Balala dead? No. Najib Balala personally rejected the false death report on 5 September 2026 and said he was well and in good spirits. Kenyan news organisations traced the panic to a fabricated graphic. No reliable evidence supports the illness claim that accompanied the hoax. What Balala actually said Balala acknowledged that people had been contacting him after seeing the report. He thanked friends and former colleagues for their concern and expressed gratitude to God, according to Kenyans.co.ke . The clarification appeared after a graphic designed to resemble a Kenyan newsroom alert spread online. Tuko's report said the image purported to come from Citizen Digital. The outlet also reported that the graphic attached an illness claim to the false death announcement. That illness claim is not confirmed by Balala's statement and should not be repeated as fact. His message addressed the false information without disclosing a diagnosis. Nairobi News likewise reported that Balala personally moved to stop the rumour. XTRAfrica has previously handled similar corrections carefully, including the recent report in which Oburu Oginga said he was recovering at home . In both cases, the person's direct statement carries more weight than anonymous cards or condolence posts. Why the false report spread quickly Balala is a nationally recognised former minister with a long record in tourism and politics. That visibility helped the fake announcement move beyond isolated posts and prompted public figures to react. The Star reported that Philip Etale apologised after sharing the false information and said a mutual friend close to Balala had told him it was untrue. The correction is important because a repost from a familiar public account can give an unsupported claim the appearance of confirmation. ADVERTISEMENT XTRAfrica has previously handled similar corrections carefully, including the recent report in which Oburu Oginga said he was recovering at home . In both cases, the person's direct statement carries more weight than anonymous cards or condolence posts. The Star reported that Philip Etale apologised after sharing the false information and said a mutual friend close to Balala had told him it was untrue. The correction is important because a repost from a familiar public account can give an unsupported claim the appearance of confirmation. The incident also echoes the risks seen when major political news breaks in Kenya. XTRAfrica's coverage of Raila Odinga's death and national mourning shows the level of official and family confirmation required for a genuine death report. A branded image alone does not meet that standard. ADVERTISEMENT Balala remains active in global tourism Balala left Kenya's Cabinet in 2022, but he continues to work in international tourism. The World Travel & Tourism Council announced on 1 May 2026 that he had joined its leadership team as Executive Vice-President for Advocacy, Government Affairs and Research, based in Madrid. WTTC said he would lead global advocacy, government engagement and policy research. The organisation also described him as a former Kenyan Tourism and Wildlife minister with more than 12 years of experience in that portfolio. His public record also includes service as Mvita MP, Mombasa mayor and Cabinet Secretary for Mining. Those roles explain why a false report about him drew rapid national attention. XTRAfrica's older coverage of Kenya's tourism policy provides background on the sector Balala once led. Trending Now US Democrats' Rwanda Record: Peaceful Change and Congo Sovereignty . - Mambasa moves 17 schools to Nia-Nia after ADF attacks
ADF violence forces 17 schools in Mambasa to relocate, exposing growing impact on education and displacement in eastern DRC. Seventeen schools in the Badengaido area of Mambasa territory have been relocated to the town of Nia-Nia after a wave of attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), disrupting education for hundreds of displaced students. The decision aims to allow classes to resume despite ongoing insecurity in Ituri province as cited by local report . Local education authorities confirmed that students and teachers fled recent violence and are now living as displaced persons in Nia-Nia. To prevent the academic year from collapsing, officials authorized the temporary transfer of 17 schools to safer locations within the town. Under the arrangement, seven host schools will provide classrooms to accommodate the incoming students. Classes were scheduled to resume on April 15 for those ready to return, according to the Mambasa 3 education subdivision. However, concerns remain about overcrowding, as some institutions including Institut Nia-Nia and EP Radjabu are expected to host multiple displaced schools. The situation reflects a broader trend in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where repeated ADF attacks have not only caused civilian casualties but also disrupted basic services such as education. Recent reporting indicates that insecurity in Mambasa has already forced thousands of children out of school, highlighting the scale of the disruption across the region. Beyond the immediate relocation, the crisis underscores how armed violence is reshaping daily life for communities. Villages attacked in March remain largely deserted, with displaced families concentrated in Nia-Nia and nearby areas, often lacking essential resources. As authorities attempt to maintain schooling under emergency conditions, the situation illustrates the growing intersection between conflict and education where access to classrooms increasingly depends on security conditions.
