  • DRC Moves to Track South Kivu 1.6M Returnees After Border Reopens

DRC says South Kivu returnees passed 1.6 million as authorities monitor security, aid needs and border trade. The Democratic Republic of Congo says it is stepping up humanitarian monitoring in South Kivu after a government briefing reported that 1,639,708 people had returned to the province between November 1, 2024, and April 30, 2026. Minister of State for Social Affairs, Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity Ève Bazaiba presented the update for the period from May 10 to 16 during the Council of Ministers meeting held on May 22. The government said the returns were recorded across several territories and cities, with Uvira, Kalehe, Walungu and Fizi among the most affected areas. Authorities linked the movement to efforts to restore state authority and reopen cross-border trade after months of disruption caused by security tensions involving AFC/M23 . The figures come as OCHA reported about 1.64 million returnees in South Kivu as of April 30, alongside 1.49 million internally displaced people in the province. The wider humanitarian situation remains fragile. The European Commission announced new aid for the Great Lakes region earlier this year, warning that conflict in eastern DRC continues to stretch food, water and shelter resources. Kinshasa says continued monitoring will focus on population movements, humanitarian needs, storm damage and areas still affected by insecurity in eastern DRC . • In Ghana, the fight against child marriage (CM) demands immediate attention, with a staggering 19% of women aged 20-24 married before 18, a practice deeply rooted in cultural, economic, and social norms, especially prevalent in the northern regions. Despite legal frameworks and efforts by the Gender Department and various organizations, child marriage persists, highlighting a critical need for reinforced action and community engagement to dismantle these deep-seated traditions. Strategic Collaborations and Interventions Efforts led by UNFPA and UNICEF, in partnership with local ministries and NGOs, are making strides with projects aimed at empowering youth, promoting gender equality, and enhancing community participation. These initiatives include the creation of 'Safe Space Systems' for adolescents and community-driven campaigns like the Child Marriage Free Community Alert Campaign, which has shown promising results in preventing child marriages through heightened community vigilance and engagement. Impact and Ongoing Challenges The interventions have led to significant achievements, such as the establishment of community by-laws against child marriage and re-enrollment of girls in schools. However, challenges remain, including the need for sustained community support and addressing underlying issues like economic hardship and lack of education. The data underscores the importance of a multifaceted approach, combining policy advocacy, community engagement, and educational initiatives to eradicate child marriage. • DRC to Invest $1.25B Eurobond Proceeds in Energy and Infrastructure

DRC Finance Minister Doudou Fwamba Likunde says $1.25B Eurobond funds will be invested in energy and transport to diversify the economy The Democratic Republic of Congo will channel the proceeds from its $1.25 billion debut Eurobond issuance, raised earlier this month, into hydropower and transport infrastructure, Finance Minister Doudou Fwamba Likunde said, outlining a strategy aimed at diversifying the country’s resource-driven economy. Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, Fwamba Likunde said the investment marks a shift from reliance on extractive industries toward broader economic development. “Critical minerals are strategic assets for the DRC, but resilience comes from what we build around these critical mineral resources,” he said. “We are bringing balance between mining and non-mining growth.” The bond sale, Congo’s first-ever issuance on international capital markets, follows years of macroeconomic reforms and efforts to restore investor confidence. The government has worked closely with the International Monetary Fund, completing a key program in 2024, which helped underpin the country’s return to global finance. Demand for the five- and ten-year bonds was four times the amount on offer, reflecting strong investor appetite despite ongoing security concerns in the country’s east. Even after the issuance, Congo’s debt levels remain relatively low, at around 20% of GDP, according to the finance minister. The DRC’s economy remains heavily dependent on mining, with copper and cobalt accounting for more than 90% of export revenues. However, authorities are now seeking to leverage this position to build long-term economic stability. The Eurobond proceeds will complement rising foreign direct investment, which has increased by 60% since 2019, largely concentrated in the mining sector. By directing funds into energy and transport, the government aims to address structural bottlenecks, particularly electricity shortages that force mining companies to rely on diesel generators. Alongside infrastructure investment, Kinshasa is advancing fiscal reforms to strengthen public finances. These include the rollout of an electronic VAT invoicing system, expected to generate more than $200 million in additional revenue this year. • Rwanda Accused of Deporting Congolese Civilians in South Kivu

South Kivu accuses Rwandan forces and M23 of forcibly displacing civilians in Katogota, eastern DR Congo, and calls for UN investigations and humanitarian aid. South Kivu authorities say families in Katogota have been forced to abandon their homes and land since October 30, 2026. The provincial government is seeking international investigations, humanitarian assistance and the safe return of displaced residents. KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo — November 2, 2026 — The South Kivu provincial government has accused the Rwandan army and its allied M23 armed movement of forcibly displacing civilians from Katogota, in Uvira territory, describing the reported operations as potential war crimes and calling for international action. In a statement reported on November 1 by the Agence Congolaise de Presse (ACP) , provincial authorities said the displacement began on the evening of Friday, October 30. They accused elements of the reorganized M23 movement of compelling civilians to leave their homes and said the fighters were operating in support of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF). The statement was also republished by Genocide Watch . The available accounts describe the provincial government's allegations; they do not independently establish the number of people affected or the precise circumstances of the reported removals. Families Reportedly Forced From Their Homes in Katogota Katogota is located in the Itara-Luvungi grouping of Uvira territory, in South Kivu's Ruzizi Plain. The provincial government alleges that residents have been compelled to abandon their houses, agricultural land and belongings, joining other families uprooted by prolonged insecurity in the region. As ACP's November 1 report recounts, provincial officials condemned the alleged expulsions and expressed solidarity with families affected by the latest violence. They called attention to the loss of shelter, livelihoods and access to land that forced displacement can cause. The statement did not provide a verified displacement total, identify all destinations to which residents were taken, or describe an independent assessment of conditions in Katogota. Establishing those facts will be essential to determining the full humanitarian consequences of the reported operation. Katogota Still Bears the Memory of a 2000 Massacre In condemning the latest allegations, the South Kivu government recalled the massacre of civilians in Katogota on May 14, 2000, during the Second Congo War. Establishing those facts will be essential to determining the full humanitarian consequences of the reported operation. ADVERTISEMENT Katogota Still Bears the Memory of a 2000 Massacre In condemning the latest allegations, the South Kivu government recalled the massacre of civilians in Katogota on May 14, 2000, during the Second Congo War. According to the provincial account reproduced by ACP , families in the community commemorate 375 victims of that massacre. The authorities attributed the killings to Rwandan troops and their allied forces and said the new allegations have revived the community's historical trauma. The figure of 375 is the number cited in the provincial statement. The 2026 allegations and the historical massacre concern distinct events and should be investigated on their respective evidence. Earlier Human Rights Watch Findings Provide Important Context The allegations from Katogota emerge against a background of previously documented forced transfers in territory controlled by M23. In a June 18, 2025 investigation , Human Rights Watch reported that the Rwanda-controlled M23 armed group had deported more than 1,500 people from occupied eastern Congo to Rwanda. It documented how fighters rounded up as many as 2,000 people in Sake on May 12, 2025, transferred them to Goma, and subsequently sent many across the border. The organization said the transfers violated the Geneva Conventions and assessed that Rwanda's effective control over parts of eastern Congo, through its forces and M23, appeared to meet the legal standard for belligerent occupation. ADVERTISEMENT These Human Rights Watch findings relate to separate incidents in 2025, not the reported October 2026 events in Katogota. They establish that forced displacement has previously been documented in M23-controlled areas, but cannot by themselves verify the new allegations. Why the Allegations Raise Questions Under International Law The South Kivu government argues that forcibly removing civilians from Katogota may violate the rules governing occupied territory. Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits forcible transfers and deportations of protected civilians from occupied territory. It permits narrowly limited temporary evacuations where civilian security or imperative military reasons require them, subject to safeguards and the return of residents as soon as conditions allow. The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court separately provides that unlawful deportation or transfer may constitute a war crime. Deportation or forcible transfer may also constitute a crime against humanity when carried out as part of a widespread or systematic attack against civilians and the other required legal elements are met. South Kivu authorities describe the reported removals as grave violations and are urging international investigators to examine the facts. Whether particular acts constitute international crimes, and who may be criminally responsible, requires evidence and a competent legal determination. Government Demands Rwandan Withdrawal and an End to Parallel Rule The provincial government has also linked its demands to UN Security Council Resolution 2773, unanimously adopted on February 21, 2025. Under Resolution 2773 , the Security Council called on the Rwanda Defence Force to stop supporting M23 and withdraw from Congolese territory without preconditions. It also demanded that M23 end hostilities, leave territory under its control and reverse the creation of parallel administrations. ADVERTISEMENT In its Katogota statement , the South Kivu government renewed its call for those demands to be implemented. It holds Rwanda and its allied armed groups responsible for the reported displacement and argues that protection of civilians requires an end to coercive practices in occupied communities. The resolution provides the international framework for those demands. It does not, on its own, establish the facts of the alleged October 30 incident. Calls for Humanitarian Assistance and International Investigations South Kivu authorities have demanded an immediate end to the reported forced removals and the free, safe and dignified return of families to Katogota. They also urged the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance to affected residents. According to ACP's coverage , the provincial government asked investigative mechanisms established by the UN Human Rights Council and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to examine the allegations and identify those who may bear responsibility. An effective response would require verifying how many people have been displaced, where they are located, what assistance they need and whether they can return without renewed threats. • ADF Attack in Ituri Leaves 43 Dead, 44 Homes Burned

DR Congo says it is intensifying operations in Mambasa after an ADF attack killed 43 people, burned 44 homes and damaged property. The Democratic Republic of Congo says it is stepping up security operations in Mambasa territory after an ADF attack on the Mambasa-Kisangani axis left 43 people dead, burned 44 houses and caused major material damage, according to authorities on Thursday. The latest assault adds to growing concern over civilian protection in Ituri, where repeated attacks have continued despite years of military pressure on the armed group. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya, citing the spokesperson of the Ituri operational sector, said the attack struck the locality of Bafwakoa and also damaged a truck and five motorcycles. He said the FARDC is reinforcing security measures, restoring order and intensifying targeted operations aimed at dismantling ADF networks in the area. The renewed military response comes after another violent period in Mambasa last month. In late March, It was reported that Congolese forces had retaken Muchacha , a strategic mining site in Ituri that had long been used by ADF fighters and had been linked to earlier massacres of civilians. The latest attack also fits a wider pattern of worsening insecurity in eastern Congo. Another report said that local officials gave a higher provisional toll than the army’s figure and said some people were still missing after the assault, underlining the difficulty of establishing final casualty counts in remote conflict zones. ADF violence has affected communities across Ituri and North Kivu for years, especially in Mambasa, Irumu, Beni and Lubero. • Juliana Lumumba Calls for a “Francophonie of the People

DRC's Juliana Lumumba outlines her vision for a renewed Francophonie in a new interview with Brut Afrique. Juliana Amato Lumumba , the Democratic Republic of Congo's candidate for Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), says the organization must evolve into a more inclusive and people-centered space focused on dialogue, culture, and peace. Speaking in an interview with Brut Afrique, Lumumba reflected on her personal connection to the French language, her vision for the OIF, and the future of the Francophone community. French as a Language of Emancipation For Lumumba, the French language carries a personal and historical significance. She recalled that her father, Congo's independence hero Patrice Lumumba , viewed French as a language that could serve emancipation and human dignity. She pointed to his famous independence speech, in which he denounced colonial abuses while drawing on universal values such as human rights and freedom. Today, she argues, French no longer belongs to a single country. "It is no longer a language centered on one nation," she explained. "It has become a shared language." Lumumba also shared memories of her childhood in Egypt, where she learned French after her family was relocated there shortly before her father's assassination in 1961. She revealed that Patrice Lumumba had sought a safe destination for his wife and children, consulting African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sékou Touré before Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser agreed to host the family. ADVERTISEMENT Growing up in a French-language school in Cairo, she developed a lasting attachment to French literature, songs, and culture. Nine Projects for a New Francophonie At the center of Lumumba's campaign is what she describes as "nine projects for a new Francophonie." One of her flagship proposals is the creation of a Francophone intercultural biennale that would bring together communities, artists, women, youth, and cultural actors from across the Francophone world. She believes the OIF should become a platform where people engage directly with one another beyond official diplomacy. Another major priority is the promotion of what she calls "sister languages." Lumumba highlighted languages such as Lingala, Swahili, Bambara, Fulani, Khmer, Creole, and Acadian French, arguing that local languages remain essential carriers of identity and cultural heritage. "Our languages should not disappear," she said. A New Focus on Peace and Conflict Prevention Lumumba also wants the Francophonie to play a stronger role in preventing conflicts. She proposes creating a Francophone Academy for Peace and Well-Being, dedicated to dialogue, conflict prevention, and peaceful resolution. ADVERTISEMENT The proposal comes at a time when several political and security crises are affecting parts of the Francophone world. Asked about the fact that the current OIF Secretary-General, Louise Mushikiwabo, is Rwandan while she herself is Congolese, Lumumba rejected any notion of rivalry. She emphasized that her candidacy is not directed against any country or individual. Instead, she said her objective is to bring fresh energy to the organization through what she calls a "Francophonie of the people, with the people, and for the people." Responding to Criticism of the OIF The OIF has sometimes faced criticism from those who view it as a legacy of colonial influence. Lumumba offered a different perspective. She argued that the founders of the Francophonie sought to transform the French language into a tool of solidarity, culture, dignity, and cooperation rather than domination. While acknowledging the importance of understanding history, she said today's realities require looking forward. "The world has changed," she explained, noting that the Francophonie must adapt to contemporary challenges rather than remain trapped in old debates. ADVERTISEMENT Open to Dialogue With the AES Countries Lumumba also addressed the departure of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) countries from the Francophone organization. She described the loss of member states as regrettable and said the OIF should focus on expanding its community rather than shrinking it. She believes dialogue remains the best path forward. If elected, she says she would seek to engage directly with countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to better understand their concerns and explore ways to rebuild trust. She noted that Niger is among the countries that played a foundational role in the history of the Francophonie, making continued engagement especially important. A Campaign Focused on Renewal Throughout the interview, Lumumba repeatedly returned to the idea of renewal. Her message is that the Francophonie should be more than a linguistic organization. It should become a space where cultures meet, young people participate, local languages are protected, and dialogue helps prevent conflict. As the race for the OIF's top post continues, Juliana Lumumba is presenting herself as a candidate focused on reform, inclusion, and reconnecting the organization with the people it represents. This helps ease pressure at pay points and ensures a smoother process for millions of beneficiaries. Day 1 – Older Persons Grants: The old age grant is paid first. Day 2 – Disability Grants: Disability grant recipients are paid the next day. Day 3 – Children’s Grants: Child support, foster care, and care dependency grants are paid on the third day. The agency does not schedule payments on the first day of the month, on a Monday, or on a weekend. When a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, SASSA brings the date forward to the previous working day. Monthly SASSA Grant Payment Schedule for 2026/27 The table below lists the confirmed payment dates for each grant category from April 2026 through March 2027, based on SASSA announcements and Times LIVE reporting. Use this calendar for planning, but always double‑check on sassa.gov.za in case of public holiday adjustments. Grant Amounts for 2026 The Finance Minister’s February 2026 budget increased most grants from April 2026. As of May 2026, grant amounts are roughly: Older Persons, Disability & Care Dependency: R2 400 per month. War Veterans: R2 420 per month. Foster Child Grant: R1 290 per month. Child Support Grant: R580 per month; the top‑up brings it to R860. Grant‑in‑Aid: R580 per month. SRD Grant: R370 per month SRD R370 Payment Dates: How They Work The Social Relief of Distress grant does not follow the three‑day rotation. Instead, SRD payments are staggered throughout the month based on your approval batch and payment method. SASSA processes the SRD R370 grant during the last week of each month, typically between the 24th and 31st. For May 2026, many recipients will be paid between 25 May and 29 May. You will receive an SMS with your payment date once your application is approved ADVERTISEMENT Where to Confirm SRD Payment Dates SRD portal: Visit srd.sassa.gov.za to check your application and payment status. SMS alerts: SASSA sends the SRD pay date to your registered phone number. Postbank or bank account: Funds are paid to your nominated account once approved. SRD payment dates vary for each person. Always check the SRD portal or your SMS notifications. SASSA SRD R370 Payment Dates for May 2026 The SASSA SRD R370 grant did not have one fixed payment date for every beneficiary in May 2026. Payments were processed in batches toward the end of the month, with each approved applicant receiving an individual payment date after SASSA completed its monthly verification checks. Several May 2026 payment trackers placed the main SRD payment period in the last week of May, but the exact day could differ from one beneficiary to another. That is why applicants should rely on their personal SASSA status result rather than assuming everyone is paid on the same date. If you were approved for the May 2026 SRD R370 payment, check your status to see whether SASSA assigned a payment date. A status showing Approved does not always mean the money has already been deposited; the payment date may still need to be assigned and processed. How to Check Your May 2026 SRD Payment Date Use the official SASSA SRD status-check service and enter the details requested for your application. Your individual result can show whether the May payment was approved and whether a payment date was assigned. If your May payment was approved but you did not receive the money, check your banking details and payment status before contacting SASSA. Delays can occur when verification or payment information still needs to be resolved. ADVERTISEMENT Important: May 2026 has already passed, but this section remains useful for beneficiaries checking an older May payment, missing payment, or historical SRD status. How to Check Your SASSA Payment Status If you’re wondering “When is SASSA paying this month?” or “Why is my SASSA grant delayed?”, checking your status helps answer these questions. Use these official channels: Online: Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, click “Check Status”, enter your ID number and phone number, and view your approval and payment date. USSD: Dial 1203210# (Gold Card menu) or 12069277# from any cellphone to check your SASSA status. WhatsApp: Send a message to 082 046 8553, follow the prompts, and check your status. SMS: Text STATUS + your ID number to 32555 to receive your current status. Call Centre: Phone the SASSA helpline 0800 60 10 11 for assistance Always use official SASSA platforms; the agency will never ask for your PIN, OTP, or bank login details over the phone Why Is My SASSA Grant Delayed? Payment delays are usually temporary and often clear within a day or two. Common causes include: Public holidays or weekends: Payments move to the previous working day, causing a slight delay. Banking issues: Incorrect bank details, closed accounts, or bank system problems can delay transfers. System maintenance: Technical updates or high network traffic at the month‑end can sometimes slow processing. Verification or reviews: Pending identity or means‑test verification may hold your payment. Administrative errors: Data entry mistakes or missing information can block payments. Status changes: Grant status under review (e.g., due to new income) may pause payment. High application volume: SRD payments serve millions; heavy traffic can cause delays. If your grant hasn’t appeared after 48 hours, confirm your payment date and bank details, then contact the SASSA call centre or visit your local office. Budgeting & Safety Tips for Beneficiaries Budget Smart Stretch your grant: Plan your month, buy essentials first (food, transport, electricity), and avoid impulse spending. Withdraw gradually: Funds remain in your account until you need them. Use retailers like Pick'n Pay or Shoprite to withdraw cash during a purchase to avoid ATM fees. Use bank accounts: Bank deposits are the safest way to receive grants; there’s no rush to withdraw everything at once. Stay Safe The South African Police Service urges beneficiaries to stay vigilant around pay days: Protect your card & PIN: Keep your personal and payment information confidential; cover the keypad when entering your PIN. Be cautious at ATMs: Avoid poorly lit or isolated ATMs and be wary of strangers offering help. Wait out crowds: Consider visiting pay points a day or two after your payment date to avoid long queues. Beware of scams: Ignore unsolicited calls or messages asking for personal details; SASSA staff never ask for your PIN or OTP. Go with a friend: Take someone you trust when withdrawing cash and remain alert before and after leaving the ATM. Report fraud: Call Crime Stop (08600 10111) or the SASSA fraud hotline (0800 701 701) if you suspect criminal activity. By following these precautions, you can collect your grant safely and avoid falling prey to criminals. Trending Now US Democrats' Rwanda Record: Peaceful Change and Congo Sovereignty . • Who Is Marie-Ange Mushobekwa? Age, Career and Kabila Split

Marie-Ange Mushobekwa biography: age, Bukavu roots, journalism, government career and her October 2026 position on Joseph Kabila's FRN. Marie-Ange Mushobekwa is a Congolese journalist, political-party founder, former government minister and former national lawmaker. On 13 October 2026 , she emerged in a new political dispute after publicly distancing herself from the armed approach she attributed to former president Joseph Kabila. She did not announce support for President Félix Tshisekedi; she said she would continue working in the opposition in Kinshasa by peaceful, republican means. The development followed the announcement of a new Kabila-led political-military coalition in Goma. Who is Marie-Ange Mushobekwa? She is a 52-year-old politician and former television journalist from Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She served as human-rights minister from 2016 to 2019, later held a national parliamentary seat, and leads the Mouvement pour la cohésion nationale. In October 2026, she rejected an armed political route associated with Joseph Kabila. Why she distanced herself from Joseph Kabila Mushobekwa worked within the political orbit of Joseph Kabila for years and held a cabinet post during his presidency. Her latest position is therefore a distinction within a long political relationship, rather than an announcement that she has joined the governing camp. In an account published at 7:03 a.m. Kinshasa time (9:03 a.m. in Uganda) , Opinion Info described her declaration as a decision to reject armed methods while remaining politically opposed to the government. CongoRassure also reported the declaration , placing her message during the night of 12–13 October. The precise time of her original X post has not been independently established. The immediate background is the Front pour la refondation de la nation (FRN) , a new coalition chaired by Kabila and announced in Goma on 12 October. She did not explicitly name the FRN in the statement described by Actualite.cd , but rejected a turn to armed politics she associated with the former president. Her position should not be confused with the reasons other former allies gave for leaving the PPRD. Readers can explore XTRAfrica's background on Kabila and M23 and its explainer on the AFC/M23 movement . How old is Marie-Ange Mushobekwa, and where was she born? She is therefore 52 years old as of 13 October 2026 , and will turn 53 in December 2026. Continue Reading Full Article BIOGRAPHY Who Is Marie-Ange Mushobekwa? She is therefore 52 years old as of 13 October 2026 , and will turn 53 in December 2026. ADVERTISEMENT Her name sometimes appears with the surname Likulia , including in parliamentary records. She is not a newly appointed official: her public life spans decades, first through broadcasting and then through national politics. A 2007 profile in Spain's El País described her as a television news presenter and political interviewer who used journalism to draw attention to sexual violence against Congolese women. Journalism before government office Mushobekwa worked as a television journalist and interviewer on the Congolese channel Antenne A. Her public profile developed through political interviews before she entered cabinet. The 2007 El País interview described the obstacles facing working women in the DRC at that time, including laws and social pressures affecting their professional independence. Those experiences help explain why she has been associated with public debates over women's rights, state institutions and political participation. Reporting on women's experiences in eastern Congo was part of her earlier career; it should not be mistaken for a claim that she personally represented every women's organisation or human-rights group in the country. From party founder to minister and parliamentarian She founded the Mouvement pour la cohésion nationale (MCN) in June 2010. The party initially aligned with the UDPS and participated in the 2011 legislative elections, according to Actualite.cd 's 2021 account . In December 2016, Prime Minister Samy Badibanga's published cabinet included Mushobekwa as minister of human rights , as recorded by Radio Okapi . She remained in the portfolio through 2019. That work placed her in the difficult position of representing the government's human-rights record during a period of deep political disagreement over security, protests and accountability. From March 2019, she also temporarily handled the communication and media portfolio. A United Nations account of an April UNESCO event identifies her as acting communications minister and government spokesperson, and records her participation in discussions about journalists' safety. She later served as a national deputy for Kabare in South Kivu . Parliamentary tracking records connect her to that constituency, although administrative databases do not all display the same end date for her term. ADVERTISEMENT On 15 June 2022 , the National Assembly invalidated her mandate and those of four other lawmakers, citing unjustified absences. Radio Okapi reported the parliamentary decision . The lawmakers contested aspects of the process, which was subsequently considered by the Inter-Parliamentary Union . This was a parliamentary mandate dispute, not a criminal conviction. Her relationship with opposition politics Mushobekwa's career does not fit a simple ruling-party-versus-opposition narrative. She established an independent political party, entered a Kabila-era government, and later said the MCN would operate in opposition. In January 2021 , she publicly committed herself to opposition politics within republican institutions, a position reported at the time by Actualite.cd . Her October 2026 statement continues that theme while drawing a line against armed political activity. A disagreement over the methods adopted by Joseph Kabila does not, by itself, prove she has endorsed the current administration or withdrawn from opposition politics. For the wider regional context, see XTRAfrica's reporting on Kabila's Goma political activity . Family information and public record Public records and reporting have used the name Mushobekwa Likulia. The 2007 El País interview referred to her as married, and later reporting has discussed her children in connection with a public legal case. In June 2026, Radio Okapi reported the military court's outcome : two police officers were convicted, while the accused senior intelligence official was acquitted. These findings should not be rewritten as a conviction of the acquitted official. Marie-Ange Mushobekwa career timeline Frequently Asked Questions Who is Marie-Ange Mushobekwa? • Eswatini Receives Two More US Deportees

Eswatini has received two more Latin American deportees from the US, expanding a transfer arrangement challenged by rights groups. MBABANE, Eswatini — 28 August 2026: Eswatini has received two more people deported from the United States under its bilateral third-country transfer arrangement. The government said the new arrivals are from Latin America but did not disclose their names, individual nationalities, current location or how long they may remain in the kingdom. Who are the latest US deportees sent to Eswatini? The government has identified them only as two Latin American third-country nationals. They form the fifth group transferred under the US–Eswatini arrangement. Their names, specific countries of citizenship, legal status and accommodation have not been publicly disclosed. In a statement issued on Thursday evening, acting government spokesperson Thabile Mdluli said the two people arrived after consultations and arrangements involving the governments of Eswatini and the United States. A local report reproducing the statement said they were received under procedures governing the admission and temporary hosting of third-country nationals. The statement did not identify the individuals beyond saying that they are Latin American. It also did not say where they are being accommodated or whether either person intends to seek protection, remain temporarily or return to a country of origin. Reuters reported that more than 30 people have now been transferred from the United States to Eswatini since the arrangement began. The Associated Press described the latest arrivals as the fifth batch. Those totals concern transfers into Eswatini, not the number still present. Several earlier deportees have subsequently returned to their home countries. Why the fifth transfer is drawing attention The latest arrival shows that the arrangement remains active despite legal challenges, protests and demands for greater transparency. The international pickup also places Eswatini back at the centre of debate over Washington’s use of African countries to receive migrants who are not their nationals. Why the fifth transfer is drawing attention The latest arrival shows that the arrangement remains active despite legal challenges, protests and demands for greater transparency. The international pickup also places Eswatini back at the centre of debate over Washington’s use of African countries to receive migrants who are not their nationals. An EFE report carried by Infobae quoted the government as saying it would continue working with the United States and international partners. EFE also reported that the two latest arrivals bring the total transferred under the arrangement to more than 30. The reported agreement is worth $5.1 million, according to Reuters. Eswatini says the transfers are temporary hosting arrangements. Lawyers and rights organisations have questioned the legal basis for holding people who have no established connection to the kingdom. What remains undisclosed The government has not published the latest deportees’ individual nationalities, reasons for removal from the United States, immigration or protection status, or intended length of stay. Those gaps prevent responsible reporting from asserting that they are asylum seekers, convicted offenders, detainees or voluntary participants. ADVERTISEMENT Earlier groups included people from countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Some were held at Matsapha Correctional Complex, while the government described its role as temporary hosting pending repatriation or another outcome. The latest two should not automatically be assumed to be at Matsapha. No current government statement located for this update disclosed their accommodation. Rights groups want disclosure and legal access Amnesty International said after the fourth transfer that it had documented concerns including arbitrary detention, restricted access to lawyers, denial of due process and the danger of onward removal to countries where people could face serious harm. Amnesty called on Eswatini to disclose the identities and whereabouts of transferred people to lawyers and families where appropriate, explain the legal basis for any detention, and ensure access to legal, medical, consular and interpretation services. ADVERTISEMENT Those concerns are not findings about the two latest arrivals’ individual circumstances. They are documented questions about the wider arrangement and the safeguards applied to previous groups. How this fits the wider African deportation strategy Eswatini is one of several African countries involved in US third-country transfers. XTRAfrica has reported on Rwanda’s agreement to receive deportees , Uganda’s expectation of further transfer flights and UN concerns over deportees in Equatorial Guinea . The new Eswatini transfer is therefore part of a continent-wide policy story, but each country’s agreement, legal framework and treatment of arrivals differs. It should not be assumed that conditions reported in one country automatically apply in another. The next useful confirmations will be the two people’s specific nationalities, whether they have access to lawyers or consular officials, where they are staying, and whether either requests repatriation. Until those facts are released, the verified story is limited to their arrival and the government’s description of temporary hosting.
