On Sunday, March 16, 2025, President Paul Kagame granted Rwandan citizenship to Grace Divine Iradukunda, widely known as DJ Ira, a talented DJ originally from Burundi.
During a gathering attended by 8,000 people in Kigali, DJ Ira expressed her gratitude for how Rwanda had welcomed her and asked President Kagame for Rwandan citizenship.
DJ Ira has built a successful career in Rwanda’s entertainment industry, particularly in DJing. She praised the country for offering equal opportunities to foreigners and women.
"I want to thank you for the way a foreign child is given opportunities just like any Rwandan child. Also, for how women get the same chances as men. This country has been a special blessing for me. We have met at different events, and that music you dance to—I'm one of those who make it happen,"
she said.
She then made her request:
“My wish is to ask for Rwandan citizenship so that I can officially be one of you.”
In response, President Kagame immediately approved her request and directed officials to follow the necessary procedures.
"Did you hear that?"
Kagame asked his team.
"I grant you the citizenship, now just follow the process required to make it official."
DJ Ira’s journey into music started in 2016, with support from her cousin, DJ Bissosso, who introduced her to Rwanda’s entertainment scene in 2015. Despite initial resistance from her family, she pursued her dream after completing high school. Today, she is one of the most sought-after DJs in Rwanda, performing at major events.
