The Ekiti State Police Command has banned protests and unauthorized gatherings just days before a planned demonstration demanding the release of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi. The police also prohibited the use of fireworks during the festive season, citing security concerns.
The Case Against Farotimi
Farotimi, a lawyer and activist, is currently on trial at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court. He faces accusations of defaming Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. The book claims Babalola influenced the Supreme Court to secure fraudulent judgments.
The court has ordered Farotimi's remand while hearing a bail application next Tuesday, December 10.
Activists, led by Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate, are organizing protests in Lagos, Abuja, and Ado-Ekiti on the same day to demand Farotimi's release.
Police Response
To maintain order, the police have issued a statement banning demonstrations, citing intelligence that some individuals may exploit the protests to incite violence.
“Unlawful gatherings or protests will not be tolerated,” said Abutu Sunday, the police spokesperson, adding that violators will face legal action.
The police urged parents to dissuade their children from disruptive activities, emphasizing the need for peace during the Ember months.
Fireworks Ban
The Command also outlawed the use of fireworks during the Yuletide, stating they often cause panic and are difficult to distinguish from gunshots. This measure aims to prevent security risks and public anxiety.
With these directives, the Ekiti police pledge to ensure safety and seek public cooperation to maintain peace in the state.
