Several injured in a Londiani-Muhoroni road crash
At least one person has died, and several others were injured after a bus accident on the Londiani-Muhoroni road in Kericho County.
The bus, traveling from Nairobi to Kisumu, crashed early Monday morning, December 9, in the Jambo Kenya area. The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 am in a region known as a blackspot.
Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene to assist and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. National Police Service Spokesperson, Dr. Resila Onyango, confirmed that the fatality involved a juvenile and that many passengers sustained injuries.
This accident happened during intensified efforts by authorities to reduce road accidents as the festive season approaches.
According to statistics, 4,282 people have lost their lives in road accidents this year, compared to 4,090 during the same period last year—a rise of 192 fatalities. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja described this increase as alarming.
“These are not just statistics but human lives which have been adversely affected as a result of road carnage,” Kanja said.
He highlighted that most road accidents are due to preventable human errors, such as disregarding traffic rules. With accidents increasing during festive periods, authorities have deployed additional traffic police and launched campaigns to ensure safety.
Kanja stated, “Through the multi-agency strategy, we are also collaborating with the National Transport and Safety Authority to conduct crackdowns and road safety compliance checks on the major highways.”
Beyond traffic safety, police have heightened security in major towns, shopping malls, and other critical areas by deploying specialized units and enhancing patrols.
The Inspector General urged all road users to adhere to traffic regulations to help prevent accidents. He called on drivers to avoid practices like speeding, operating unroadworthy vehicles, or driving under the influence.
“We also appeal to the owners of motor vehicles and boda boda saccos to collaborate with our officers to enhance discipline among drivers,” he added.
While police are taking these measures, Kanja reminded Kenyans that road safety is a shared responsibility.
