Rwandan cyclist Mugisha Moïse, who competes for Team Rwanda, has explained why he stopped during the Tour du Rwanda 2025 race to greet his family, saying they mean more to him than anything else.

On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, the third stage of the race took place from Musanze to Rubavu. As the riders passed Busogo, Mugisha saw his wife and twin children, who had come to cheer him on. He stopped briefly to greet them before continuing the race.

Some people criticized this move, arguing that he should have stayed focused and competed to help a Rwandan rider win the stage.

However, Mugisha defended his decision, saying:

“Family comes first, and I believe cycling is about joy. This sport is both competition and family, so when I saw them, I had to stop and greet them.”

He added that as a professional cyclist, he was confident he could catch up with the group after stopping.

Mugisha also stated that Team Rwanda is determined to win at least one of the remaining stages, starting with Stage 4, from Rubavu to Karongi.

Notably, Mugisha is the only Rwandan cyclist who has won a stage in the UCI 2.1-level Tour du Rwanda, achieving this feat in 2022 while riding for ProTouch.
