Senior State House Advisor Moses Kuria has called on President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga to come together and craft a new constitution for Kenyans.
In a personal statement, Kuria urged the three leaders to pick up where the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) left off and spearhead the creation of reforms.
“Give this country a Constitution that speaks to the emerging realities of our nation and our society. BBI Season 2 is urgent and cannot wait,” Kuria said.
The BBI, introduced in October 2019, aimed to amend Kenya’s constitution but was later declared unconstitutional by the courts. It had been born from the famous "Handshake" between Uhuru and Raila, which helped calm tensions following post-election unrest.
The initiative focused on nine key areas that the two leaders identified as critical to uniting the country.
Kuria highlighted that Kenyans cannot continue relying on symbolic handshakes or private meetings to feel secure.
“The frequent handshakes and artificial formations have vindicated President Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila on the BBI initiative. They were right and we were wrong,” he admitted.
Kuria’s remarks followed President Ruto’s visit to Uhuru at his Kiambu home.
The former Gatundu South MP also reflected on the political landscape in the Mt. Kenya region, expressing regret about leaving the Jubilee Party.
“Mt Kenya region, like all other regions, deserves a strong political voice. It is our inalienable right. For all the good and bad lessons we have learnt, it was a mistake to leave the Jubilee Party,” Kuria said.
He revealed plans to unite regional political parties under the Jubilee Party, with Uhuru Kenyatta as leader.
“We did it in 2016 when we dissolved parties to form Jubilee. We will do it again. Jubilee under Uhuru as the party leader is the way to go,” he concluded.
