Adel Amrouche is set to become the new head coach of Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, after reaching an agreement with the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) and the Ministry of Sports.

Reliable sources confirm that Amrouche, who is originally from Algeria but also holds Belgian nationality, was chosen from a shortlist of three finalists after a long selection process involving many applicants.

A FERWAFA official stated that selecting Amrouche marks a new direction for Rwandan football, emphasizing experienced and high-profile coaches capable of making a big impact.

“We have been searching for the right coach for Amavubi. Amrouche was one of the candidates we interviewed, and after discussions, we agreed he would take the job.”

A Coach with African and European Experience

Amrouche, who recently won a legal case against CAF after being previously suspended for comments made during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is highly respected in African football. He has also worked as a technical expert alongside Arsène Wenger, the former Arsenal manager, to help develop youth football and improve football academies worldwide.

His coaching career in Africa began with Burundi (2007-2012), where he helped send over 15 players to European clubs, including Papy Faty and Saido Ntibazonkiza—a move that transformed Burundian football.

He later led Kenya to victory in the 2014 CECAFA Cup, defeating Rwanda twice during the tournament. More recently, he coached Tanzania at the last AFCON, bringing the youngest squad in the competition.

Amrouche holds the prestigious UEFA Pro License and has been responsible for training other coaches in Belgium, including Luc Eymael, who previously worked in Rwanda.

Amavubi’s Upcoming Matches

With just 10 days before Amavubi enters camp to prepare for FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Amrouche will have little time to settle in. Rwanda is set to face Nigeria on March 17 and Lesotho on March 24, with both games taking place at Stade Amahoro.
