Yaa Pono a Ghanaian rapper and songwriter

Ghanaian rapper Yaa Pono on Instagram, also active through his official Yaa Pono X profile, has spent nearly two decades making wit, local language and street observation the centre of his music. Born Solomon Adu Antwi in Tema, he is also known as Ponobiom and leads the Uptown Energy movement. His catalogue moves freely through hip-hop, hiplife, Afrobeats, dancehall and highlife without losing its Ghanaian voice.

From the early The Psalms mixtape and “Amen” to the 2017 rap flashpoint “Gbee Naabu” and the award-winning “Obia Wone Master,” Yaa Pono’s story is one of lyrical independence, patient growth and a name he refused to surrender.

Who is Yaa Pono? Yaa Pono, whose real name is Solomon Adu Antwi, is a Ghanaian rapper, songwriter and Uptown Energy founder from Tema. He is known for witty Akan-language rap, energetic freestyles and songs including “Amen,” “Gbee Naabu” and the 2019 VGMA-winning “Obia Wone Master” featuring Stonebwoy.

“Prince of New Origin”: The Name and the Identity

Yaa Pono’s stage name is not a careless provocation. In a 2018 interview reported by Citi Newsroom and Graphic Showbiz, he explained that PONO is an acronym for “Prince Of New Origin.” He said some radio and media workers resisted the name because they heard a sexual connotation, and that the resistance slowed his progress. Changing it, however, would have meant discarding the identity under which he had already struggled and achieved.

“I have had this name for a decade and nothing will make me change it.” Yaa Pono, speaking to Graphic Showbiz

Ponobiom became a useful alternative presentation, but not a retreat. Both names now carry the same idea: an artist who treats self-definition as part of the work. That independence matters because his music repeatedly asks who gets to decide what Ghanaian rap should sound like, which words are acceptable and whose version of the street deserves an audience.

The Craft: Akan Wordplay, Pidgin and a Wide Musical Palette

The quickest way to understand Yaa Pono is to listen for movement. A verse may begin in Twi, pivot through English or Ghanaian Pidgin, then land on a proverb, joke or blunt social observation. KISUA’s early profile of the rapper described witty Akan freestyles and a sound spanning hip-hop, Afrobeats, dancehall and rock. That range places him naturally within XTRAfrica’s wider Ghana music collection, where hiplife and rap constantly exchange ideas with highlife, pop and dancehall.

His method is less fixed than the mythology around it. In a 2016 Hitz FM interview, he described writing his thoughts down; by 2020, he told another interviewer that he had learned to compose most verses in his head. The consistent element is not the notebook but attention his ability to turn speech, conflict and ordinary detail into bars. He once summarised the artistic problem this way:
