The World Health Organization is expanding its Ebola response in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with six additional tons of medical supplies expected to arrive Tuesday as health teams race to contain the growing outbreak as cited by Reuters.
WHO officials said the shipment includes personal protective equipment for frontline workers and laboratory materials, adding to 12 tons of supplies already sent to support the response.
The emergency effort comes as authorities widen surveillance, testing and contact tracing amid uncertainty over the true scale of transmission.
WHO has identified the outbreak as Ebola Bundibugyo, a strain for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists. Concern has also grown after health authorities confirmed a first Ebola case in Goma, a major city near the Rwandan border.
Local reporting from Radio Okapi said border activity with Rwanda was disrupted as containment measures intensified.
The confirmed Goma case has pushed the response beyond Ituri, the outbreak’s epicenter, raising the stakes for regional monitoring and cross-border health coordination.
