Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel is set to perform in Kigali as part of the inaugural Talanta Afrika Festival, a new regional music event designed to connect African creative industries and showcase emerging talent.

The festival will tour Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya in early May 2026, bringing together artists from across East Africa and beyond. Vybz Kartel will headline the event, marking one of the most anticipated international performances in Rwanda’s entertainment calendar.

According to the event organizers, the initiative aims to strengthen Africa’s creative economy by highlighting talent in music, fashion, and broader artistic industries.

Festival Tour Across East Africa

The Talanta Afrika Festival will begin on May 1, 2026 in Kampala, Uganda, where Kartel will perform at Lugogo Cricket Oval during Labour Day celebrations.

The tour will then move across the region before concluding in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 8 at Laureate Gardens along Thika Road. After the Nairobi show, the Jamaican dancehall star will travel to Kigali, where he is scheduled to perform on May 9, 2026 at BK Arena, one of Rwanda’s largest venues for international concerts.

For Rwandan dancehall fans, the event is expected to be historic. Kartel remains one of the most influential figures in the genre, with a career spanning more than two decades.

Platform for African Talent

Organizers say the festival is designed to go beyond a typical concert tour. Instead, it aims to create a long-term platform that connects artists, entrepreneurs, and entertainment professionals across Africa.

Bushington of Tunez Records Uganda, one of the organizers, described the festival as a cultural movement intended to unite Africans through creativity and shared cultural values.

“It’s not just a concert. It’s a journey to showcase what East Africa can achieve and connect it to the global stage,” he said during a media briefing.

Other participating artists include Kenyan singer Charisma, known for tracks such as True Love, as well as Ugandan performer Elijah Kitaka and Rwandan artist Element Eleéeh, highlighting the festival’s focus on regional collaboration.

Vybz Kartel’s Global Influence

Vybz Kartel, often referred to as the “King of Dancehall,” has remained a major force in the genre for over 20 years.

Songs such as “Clarks” (2010) featuring Popcaan helped popularize the Clarks footwear brand globally and expanded dancehall’s influence beyond Jamaica. Tracks like “Summertime,” “Romping Shop,” and “Fever” further cemented his reputation as one of the genre’s most influential artists.

Despite controversies and legal challenges throughout his career, Kartel’s music has continued to reach international audiences, gaining strong support in Europe, North America, and Africa.

Kigali’s Growing Global Entertainment Profile

BK Arena has hosted several international performers in recent years, and Kartel’s upcoming appearance is expected to further strengthen Rwanda’s reputation as a major entertainment destination in East Africa.

For fans of dancehall music, May 2026 is shaping up to be a memorable moment, as one of the genre’s most iconic figures brings his music and legacy to Kigali.
