Nestled near the western shores of Lake Kivu and close to the Rwandan border, Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of Congo’s greatest treasures and stands proudly among the Top Natural Wonders of DR Congo.  — a majestic blend of ancient volcanoes, misty forests, and some of the rarest wildlife on Earth. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a top destination for gorilla trekking in DR Congo, offering an adventure you’ll never forget.

A Park Built on Fire and Forest

Covering over 6,000 km², Kahuzi-Biega seamlessly connects highland and lowland rainforest ecosystems. Two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi (3,308m) and Mount Biega (2,790m), dominate the skyline. The eastern part is accessible to tourists, while the western lowlands remain untouched and mysterious. It’s the only park in the world where visitors can trek into the territory of the critically endangered eastern lowland gorilla (Grauer’s gorilla) — the largest gorilla species on Earth.

Gorilla Trekking: A Rare, Raw Encounter

Since opening to tourists in 2015, Kahuzi-Biega has become a sought-after destination for gorilla lovers. Treks take you deep into the forest to spend an unforgettable hour in the presence of wild gorilla families — observing their social behavior, playful infants, and powerful silverbacks up close. These moments offer a deep emotional connection that leaves visitors speechless.

Unlike the steep climbs of Virunga National Park’s mountain gorilla treks, Kahuzi-Biega’s eastern lowland gorilla tracking is more gentle in terrain, making it ideal for travelers seeking a unique, accessible gorilla experience.

Wildlife & Birding Paradise

Beyond gorillas, the park is home to 136 mammal species and at least 349 bird species, including the dazzling Congo peafowl and the elusive Shelley’s crimsonwing. You'll also find blue monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, forest elephants, and night creatures like bush babies and pottos.

A Living Laboratory of Plants

Kahuzi-Biega is a plant-lover’s Eden with over 1,178 plant species, ranging from high-altitude bamboo and heather forests to giant groundsel plants that rise like prehistoric towers. It’s one of the few places on Earth that still shows a full transition from lowland to highland rainforest.

A Park That Refuses to Fall

Founded in 1970 by Belgian conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the park has survived years of conflict, poaching, and illegal mining. Today, thanks to the efforts of rangers, local communities, and conservation partners, it’s reclaiming its glory. Visitors now benefit from improved security, guided treks, and eco-tourism services.

How to Visit Kahuzi-Biega

The park is best accessed from Bukavu (DRC) or Kigali (Rwanda), with trekking permits available for those planning in advance. The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to September) when hiking trails are more accessible and wildlife sightings are frequent.

Part of Congo’s Natural Crown

Kahuzi-Biega is not just a park, it’s a symbol of Congo’s natural wealth and resilience. It stands proudly among the Top Natural Wonders of DR Congo, alongside Virunga National Park, Lake Kivu, and Nyiragongo Volcano. As DR Congo positions itself as one of Africa’s top ecotourism destinations, Kahuzi-Biega offers visitors a chance to experience nature at its wildest and most profound.

If you crave wild landscapes, soulful wildlife encounters, and the raw magic of Africa, this park belongs on your bucket list.
