In a tragic escalation of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, suspected Islamist rebels have killed at least 10 civilians in an assault near the city of Beni, local authorities confirmed on Saturday. The attack occurred in Mulekera commune, just outside Beni, where individuals were targeted while working in their fields.
Attack Details and Victim Identification
According to Mulekera Mayor Ngongo Mayanga, the attackers, believed to be part of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), opened fire on unsuspecting civilians.
"Seven bodies have been collected so far, including those of three women, and five more victims have been reported in nearby areas," Mayor Mayanga stated. He also expressed concerns that the death toll might rise as search efforts continue.
ADF and Regional Instability
The ADF, originally from Uganda and now based in eastern Congo, has reportedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, contributing to the region's ongoing instability. This area is notorious for its activity by various militant groups, leading to a protracted humanitarian crisis.
Eyewitness Account
One eyewitness, who narrowly escaped the attack, shared a harrowing tale of survival.
"I was working in the field when I heard gunshots. After parting ways with my daughter-in-law, who sadly was killed, I fled into the forest to hide. I spent a fearful night there, avoiding the assailants," he recounted.
Ongoing Conflict and Displacement
Eastern Congo has been ravaged by decades of conflict involving the army and numerous rebel factions. The United Nations reports that the number of people displaced by the ongoing violence had reached 7.1 million by the end of March, as per the U.N. humanitarian agency OCHA.
The international community continues to monitor the situation in eastern Congo closely, as the frequency of attacks raises serious concerns about regional security and the effectiveness of current peacekeeping efforts.
