South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected for a second term by the country's parliament. This has significant implications for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in terms of South Africa's support for the DRC's armed forces against the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) and the M23 rebel group. Ramaphosa's re-election comes at a critical time as the DRC grapples with internal conflict and external aggression from Kagame's forces
Paul Kagame's forces have been a major source of instability in eastern DRC since 1996,repeatedly resurfacing under the guise of the M23 rebel group, which is now classified as a terrorist organization in Congo. The conflict has led to widespread displacement, human rights abuses, and significant loss of life. (UN report)
In response to the crisis, President Ramaphosa has taken a proactive stance in support of the DRC. In 2023, he announced the deployment of South African troops to the DRC to assist the FARDC in their efforts to combat the RDF/M23 rebels. This move was part of a broader regional initiative, led by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), to address the security challenges in the eastern DRC.
