Pope Leo XIV is set to begin a 10-day trip across four African countries, using one of the biggest foreign tours of his papacy so far to call wider global attention to the continent’s needs, according to Reuters.
The April 13-23 visit will take the pontiff to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea, with stops that combine diplomatic meetings, public masses and appeals for peace and dialogue. The Vatican’s published itinerary confirms visits to cities including Algiers, Annaba, Yaounde, Bamenda, Luanda, Saurimo, Malabo and Bata.
The tour also underlines Africa’s growing importance to the Catholic Church. Reuters reported that more than a fifth of the world’s Catholics now live on the continent, making the visit both a pastoral mission and a strategic signal about where the Church sees its future.
In Algeria, Leo is expected to promote Catholic-Muslim dialogue, including a stop at the Great Mosque of Algiers. In Cameroon, one of the most closely watched events will be a peace meeting in Bamenda, a city in the country’s conflict-hit Anglophone region, according to the Vatican itinerary.
The trip is also notable for its scale. The report described it as an ambitious tour covering 11 cities and towns and involving 18 flights, making it Leo’s first major overseas journey of 2026 and one of the clearest signs yet of his international priorities.
