South African actress and media personality Pearl Thusi has announced a new chapter in her career with the release of her debut single, Sodwa, signalling her formal entry into the music and DJing space.
The 37-year-old, who has spent more than two decades in acting and television presenting, said the move into music follows years of hesitation and self-doubt. Her interest in DJing, she explained, dates back several years, but she was initially discouraged by technical challenges before finding renewed motivation through the rise of amapiano.
Thusi said she began practising consistently, dedicating several hours each morning to improving her mixing skills. Her first live set took place in Soweto, with industry peers including DBN Gogo and DJ Maphorisa encouraging her to pursue the craft professionally.
Sodwa, although her first official release, is the fourth track she recorded, having been completed approximately three years ago. She noted that contributors to the song include rapper Reason and her creative partner Black B, who assisted with melodies and backing vocals.
Describing the track’s sound, Thusi said it blends elements of maskandi, Afrobeat, amapiano log drums and Afro-pop, while lyrically celebrating positive and affirming love in its various forms.
On audience reception, she said she remains open to public opinion, adding that her aim is for the song to resonate in social and celebratory settings.
Thusi clarified that her venture into music does not signal an end to her acting career. She confirmed involvement in a new BET series, though details remain undisclosed.
Looking ahead, she revealed upcoming collaborations with Mörda and Phila Dlozi, noting that she has already recorded close to ten songs as part of her evolving music catalogue.
Speaking on her personal life, Thusi expressed pride in her 20-year-old daughter and said her hope is for her to grow confidently and pursue her ambitions without self-doubt.
