Journalists in North Kivu have urged the Congolese government to strengthen support for media workers facing insecurity, threats and difficult working conditions, according to Radio Okapi’s report.
The appeal was made on Sunday, May 3, during World Press Freedom Day activities in Beni. Valérie Mukosasenge, disciplinary officer of the UNPC North Kivu section, said government action remains necessary to guarantee press freedom and allow journalists to work without obstruction.
In Lubero territory, the local UNPC says conditions have become increasingly precarious. Journalists reportedly face arrests and threats in government-controlled areas, while some working in zones affected by M23 control have left the profession because of insecurity.
Jean Maliro, president of UNPC/Lubero, also cited the impact of ADF activity in the Bapere sector, where some radio stations have closed or been burned.
The call comes as UNESCO marked World Press Freedom Day 2026 against a wider backdrop of declining press freedom globally. In eastern DRC, Reporters Without Borders has documented repeated attacks and restrictions affecting journalists and media outlets in North Kivu.
For the UNPC representatives, stronger protection and institutional support are needed so journalists can continue serving as a public-interest watchdog in a conflict-affected province.
