CHICAGO, United States - October 7, 2026: Mbekezeli Mbokazi took another step in his comeback as he started Chicago Fire's 3-1 Major League Soccer victory over Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field on Tuesday, October 6.

The South African defender, 21, was making his second appearance since returning from injury. His comeback began in Chicago's 1-0 win at Charlotte on September 26.

What did Mbokazi do against Vancouver? Mbekezeli Mbokazi started in defence as Chicago Fire won 3-1 at Soldier Field on October 6. It was his second match since returning from injury, following the win at Charlotte. Flashscore credited him with 10 clearances and six successful duels.

Chicago's report of the Charlotte victory records Mbokazi's first club appearance since May 23, before he left to represent South Africa at the World Cup. He started against Charlotte and was replaced by Sam Rogers in the 80th minute.

The Vancouver appearance builds on that first outing. Mbokazi has now started successive league matches, giving him an opportunity to rebuild his match rhythm after the long break from club football.

In August, MLS reported that a thigh tear was expected to keep him out for the remainder of the 2026 season. Chicago coach Gregg Berhalter described the setback at the time: "Mbo being out for the year is a tough one."

Before the injury, Mbokazi had started all 12 of his MLS appearances. The league also said he played every minute of South Africa's World Cup campaign, including a difficult opening period when Bafana faced pressure to respond to defeat by Mexico.

Ten clearances in another winning performance

Flashscore's account of the Vancouver match credited Mbokazi with 10 clearances, six recoveries and five interceptions. He also won six of the eight duels recorded for him.

Those figures describe a busy defensive contribution rather than a goalscoring one. Clearances and interceptions helped break up Vancouver attacks, while the duel record gives another measure of his involvement in the contest.

Mbokazi was in the starting defence alongside Jack Elliott, with Jonathan Dean and Leonardo Barroso also starting at the back. He completed the match after his 80-minute outing at Charlotte.

How Chicago secured the 3-1 win

Vancouver's match report records an early Chicago lead through Jonathan Bamba, who scored in the ninth minute. Philip Zinckernagel then struck the post with a penalty before making it 2-0 in the 50th minute.

Mathias Laborda's header from an Oliver Larraz corner reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute. The match remained within Vancouver's reach until Maren Haile-Selassie finished from Robert Lewandowski's pass in the 88th minute.

Chicago moved above Charlotte into fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 45 points. Vancouver remained top of the Western Conference despite the defeat.

The match had been rescheduled because of poor air quality linked to wildfire smoke.

Dithejane contributes as Bafana look towards Kenya

Fellow South African Puso Dithejane replaced Zinckernagel in the 76th minute. Chicago's account places him in the build-up to the final goal, playing the ball back before the move continued through midfield and reached Lewandowski. The official scoring record credited Lewandowski and Johan Gomez with the assists.

Mbokazi's return also has a national-team dimension. South Africa face Kenya home and away in November in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, according to Flashscore's report.

For Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, having another defender playing club football could widen his options. Ime Okon, Lebone Seema and Olwethu Makhanya have featured in the recent international matches, so Mbokazi's return adds to the selection discussion rather than settling it.

Mosimane took over the national side in September.

His next squad decision will show how he balances the players used in his opening matches with those returning to regular club action.

Mbokazi's progress adds another strand to South Africa's overseas club picture, alongside Relebohile Mofokeng's start at Union Saint-Gilloise. A club performance can strengthen a player's case, but it is not itself a national-team recall.

New York City FC comes next

Chicago's next scheduled match is at home to New York City FC on Saturday, October 10. The club lists kickoff at 1:30 p.m. Central Time, which is 8:30 p.m. in South Africa.

That fixture offers Mbokazi a possible next step in building match minutes, subject to team selection. Another appearance would give him a third successive club outing as Chicago try to build on their two recent victories.
